1881 - President James Garfield died of complications from a gunshot wound inflicted by a disappointed office seeker the previous July 2; Vice President Chester A. Arthur then became the 21st president of the United States.

1934 - Bruno Hauptmann was arrested for the kidnap and murder of the child of Charles and Anne Lindbergh.

1955 - President Juan Peron of Argentina was deposed and exiled after a military coup.

1957 - The United States conducted its first underground nuclear test in the Nevada desert.

1962 - Gov. Ross Barnett blocked James Meredith from enrolling in the University of Mississippi.

2022 - Great Britain and the world said a final goodbye to Queen Elizabeth II at a state funeral that drew presidents, kings, princes and prime ministers -- and crowds who thronged the streets of London.

2000 - Ken Griffey Jr. pinch hits his 400th home run, becoming the first MLB player to reach that mark as a pinch hitter.

2002 - Tom Gamboa, coach of the Kansas City Royals, was attacked by a man and his son while he was standing near first base. The two fans were arrested and charged with battery.

2004 - Wide receiver Jerry Rice of the Oakland Raiders ends his NFL streak of 274 consecutive games with a reception in a game against the Buffalo Bills.

2008 - Pitcher Greg Maddux throws his 5,000th career inning in a game against the San Francisco Giants.

2009 - #13 Virginia Tech defeats #19 Nebraska 16-15.

2015 - Miami (FL) defeats Nebraska 36-33 in overtime.

The coaching staff absolutely needs to get his fumbling issues figured out, because he is the only player on the offensive roster that has shown any explosiveness. There is zero chance that we will be able to consistently sustain drives once conference play starts, so we need someone that can occasionally create a chunk play. Rhule says Anthony Grant, Emmett Johnson and freshman Kwinten Ives are the three who will lead the RB room now.
