Football Michigan beat writers give score predictions on Wolverines vs. Huskers

Michigan vs. Nebraska score predictions from MLive's beat writers
by Ryan Zuke, Aaron McMann & Andrew Kahn, MLive.com
ANN ARBOR – Michigan hits the road for the first time this week at Nebraska, but will it leave Lincoln on Saturday with a fifth straight victory?

Oddsmakers believe the second-ranked Wolverines (4-0, 1-0) have a significant edge over the Cornhuskers, who have won two straight against Northern Illinois and Louisiana Tech after losses to Minnesota and Colorado to begin the year.

The last time Michigan played in Lincoln in 2021, it needed two late field goals from Jake Moody to prevail, 32-29, in an electric night game atmosphere. This week’s kickoff is at 3:30 p.m., but could Nebraska give Michigan another scare? Or will the Wolverines cruise to another lopsided victory like their first four games of the season?

Here are score predictions from MLive’s Michigan beat writers:

Ryan Zuke
With Nebraska's defense ranking No. 1 in the Big Ten against the run, Saturday seems like a prime opportunity for J.J. McCarthy and the Michigan passing game to have a big day. But with the forecast calling for 90-degree weather with winds in the 20 mph-range, moving the ball through the air might be difficult. I expect the Wolverines to try and establish the run with Blake Corum and Donovan Edwards, but they might have to rely on their play-action game and quick throws to have success against this Nebraska 3-3-5 defense.

The Cornhuskers' defense will keep them in the game in the first half, but they just don't have enough firepower on offense to keep up with Michigan. Turnovers plagued them in the first two games, but they only have one in the past two with Heinrich Haarberg at quarterback. The sophomore certainly isn't a prolific passer, but he has rushed for 255 yards in the last two games. Nebraska might be able to pick up a few first downs and not give Michigan great field position with costly turnovers, but the Wolverines are the better team, and the score will reflect that at the end. Michigan 27, Nebraska 10

Andrew Kahn

This Michigan offense is due to explode. The new clock rules have meant fewer possessions, and so Michigan hasn't put up quite as many points as some expected. The Wolverines have still been very efficient, and I think that translates into a lot of points on Saturday.

I'm aware of this point spread, Nebraska's statistics running the ball and defending the run, and that Michigan is playing its first road game of the season. But Michigan has had some dominant performances in the Big Ten the past couple years, and I have a hunch this will be another.

Matt Rhule wants his program to become something like Michigan's. On Saturday he'll see how much work he has to do to get there. Michigan 42, Nebraska 14

Aaron McCann
A three-score point spread and a plummeting total (currently at 39) means oddsmakers think we're in for a knockdown, drag-out fight on the ground. And I think, ideally, that's where Michigan wants to take this game. I'm expecting Edwards to be more involved and the Wolverines to control tempo early in an effort to quiet the road crowd.

Look for Michigan to score early, control the clock and keep a Nebraska offense that ranks 90th nationally in yards (359.3) and 103rd in points (21.8) out of the end zone. Michigan 24, Nebraska 9

LSE vs LSW

LSE has a kicker kicking 70 yard FGs in warm ups. Donald Defrand Jr. is really fast and a good corner, he had a 90 yard KO return for a TD. Also, #74 is big and plays football the right way with some attitude. Hope all 3 are getting some looks from Rhule.

LSW needs new coaches. They look lost. Horrible play calling. Has some talent and should not be 1-3. Where do they find these guys. I see better play calling in 3rd-6th grade football.

John Cook - Will end up as GOAT CVB coach when he's done ... and I don't think he's going anywhere anytime soon

Cook and his staff built recruiting machine unamatched by any other program in nation - now with NIL advantages on top of everything else. NU going to get the #1 class a majority of years ... https://godigred.com/commits/

But, Cook has built an assistant coaching staff which has TREMENDOUS experience at this level ... Kelly Hunter & Jordan Larson are of course going to get the attention of their players given their Husker legend status but also because they can teach them the high level, nuanced things that must be developed to win at this level ...

But, Hunter is showing to be a brilliant hire by Cook ... who of course knows just how high IQ she is about the game & a genius in the classroom to match ... our setting this year has been remarkable & you can even see the little things like Bergen Riley dumping the ball over the middle of the net when the opponents get pushed back because our attack is terrifying - but, she is playing the position like a QB & the team is able to flow from all angles & use their immense athleticism to throw lasers from the back row - just not fair - and of course go to both sides of the net to find space to attack ...with group of athletes capable of taking over entire matches

And Larson is perhaps the best VB player of all-time, got to be able to help with so much about everything - from tactics to S&C to life skills

Oh, and Reyes is suppsoedly a VB savant & absorbs any and all strategic developments across the entire VB landscape while also being a maniacally smooth recruiter & closer ... Cook said Reyes has taught him all sorts of defensive strategies and ideas from the male VB side & Huskers have the type of athletes to utiilize those types of tactics in the women's game & we are seeing it with the Husker defensive approach and effectiveness showing to be one of the best of all time.

End of the day - I HAVE to think Cook wants at least one more title before he considers passing the baton - he seems hungry to do more than that - on and off the floor

This could be that special kind of seaason if the team keeps the defense up & remains healthy

Baseball Nebraska beats Omaha 18-10 to open fall slate

Had volleyball last night so couldn't make it out to Haymarket Park, but Nebraska opened up fall ball with an 18-10 victory over in-state rival Omaha last night in 14 innings.

Despite surrendering 10 runs, it was a good day for a revamped Husker pitching staff including two one-hit innings from Drew Christo who got the Friday start. Northwestern State transfer Kyle Froehlich followed with two more innings where he allowed one run on three hits with a pair of strikeouts.

Jackson Brockett and Cloud CC transfer Mason McConnaughey were the two pitchers who were hammered. Brockett gave up four runs on four hits in one inning of action. McConnaughey only recorded one out before allowing three runs on one hit.

Taking over for MLB first-round pick Brice Matthews at shortstop, Dylan Carey paced the offense by going 3-for-5 with a home run and two RBI. Garrett Anglim also hammered a home run while center fielder and JUCO transfer Riley Silva went 3-for-3. Here's the full recap from yesterday.

...

Nebraska baseball began its fall slate with an 18-10 win against Omaha in an exhibition at Hawks Field at Haymarket Park on Friday night.

The Huskers scored 18 runs on 20 hits and one error, while the Mavericks totaled 10 runs on 11 hits and an error.

Dylan Carey led Nebraska at the plate, going 3-for-5 with two home runs, two RBI and a walk. Riley Silva was 3-for-3 with a double, RBI and a pair of sacrifice hits. Will Walsh, Garrett Anglim, Case Sanderson, Dylan Hufft and Rhett Stokes pieced together multi-hit games for the NU offense.

Drew Christo tossed two one-hit shutout innings with three strikeouts in the start. Kyle Froehlich pitched two innings, while Jalen Worthley, Will Rizzo and Casey Daiss threw one inning apiece. Tucker Timmerman dealt two scoreless innings with two strikeouts, followed by shutout one-inning appearances by Kyle Perry and Evan Borst.

Christo worked around a two-out single in the top of the first, while the NU offense plated the game’s first run without a hit in the bottom of the first. Brumbaugh worked a leadoff walk and advanced on a sacrifice bunt, before a passed ball and errant throw by the UNO catcher sent him home.

Christo retired the side in order with a pair of strikeouts and a flyout to keep the Mavericks scoreless through a pair of innings.

The Big Red tacked onto its lead with four runs on four hits in the bottom of the second to make it a 5-0 game. Ben Columbus reached on an infield single, setting up Anglim’s one-out two-run homer to left-center. The inning ended early due to pitch count, and the Huskers were awarded two additional runs.

A two-out double down the left-field line scored Omaha’s first run of the night in the top of the third. The Mavericks doubled their run production with a leadoff solo homer to begin the fifth frame.

NU had runners on second and third with no outs after Brumbaugh drew a four-pitch walk and Riley Silva singled and advanced on the throw. The Big Red scored a run in the inning after Stone’s RBI groundout brought home Cayden Brumbaugh to make it 6-2 through five.

A sacrifice fly and additional run due to pitch count in the bottom of the sixth had the Huskers out front 8-3 after a solo homer in the top half of the inning by Omaha.

Omaha scored four runs on four hits in the top of the eighth to make it a one-run game heading into the bottom of the eighth. Carey smacked a solo home run down the left-field line to double the lead to 9-7 through eight innings.

The Huskers stretched the lead to five behind three runs on one hit in the ninth. Walsh and Anglim reached on walks, while an RBI single by Stokes and a wild pitch gave Nebraska a four-run advantage. The bottom of the ninth ended early due to pitch count, and the Huskers were awarded an extra run.

Carey expanded the NU lead to six with a towering, 406-foot solo homer down the left-field line in the bottom of the 10th.

Omaha trimmed the deficit in half with three runs on one hit in the 12th. A wild pitch and RBI single plated the first two runs, while Mavericks were awarded an additional run due to pitch count.

The Huskers got two runs back without a hit in the bottom of the 12th to extend the lead to 15-10. Hayden Lewis and Hufft reached on walks, before an RBI fielder’s choice from Clay Bradford and a wild pitch gave the Big Red the five-run lead.

Silva’s RBI sacrifice bunt plated Walsh in the 13th, while the Big Red tacked on two more runs in the 14th with RBI singles by Aaron Manias and Walsh.
