Volleyball Huskers overpower TCU, win 25th straight home match

Press release via Nebraska Athletics Communications:

The No. 2 Nebraska volleyball team won its 25th straight match at home with a 25-15, 25-23, 23-25, 25-13 victory over TCU in front of a crowd of 8,695 at the Bob Devaney Sports Center on Saturday night. The Huskers won both of their matches at the Ameritas Players Challenge as they swept Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on Friday night.

Nebraska (3-0) hit .213 and held TCU (1-1) to .168 hitting for the match. The Huskers had a 55-40 edge in kills, a 61-43 advantage in digs and led 9-0 in aces. NU also finished with 12 blocks to 9 for the Horned Frogs. Five of the 12 came in the fourth set.

Harper Murray paced the Huskers with 20 kills on .302 hitting, and she added six digs and three blocks. Lindsay Krause tallied nine kills, and Merritt Beason added eight.

Rebekah Allick finished with seven kills and six blocks. Andi Jackson had eight kills on .467 hitting with four blocks.

Bergen Reilly recorded 43 assists and 14 digs for her third double-double this season. Lexi Rodriguez led the team in digs with 18. Laney Choboy added seven.

Melanie Parra led the Horned Frogs with 14 kills.

Set 1: With the score tied 9-9, a TCU service error put the Huskers on top, and Beason and Allick combined for two straight blocks to put NU ahead 12-9. A 5-0 Husker run made it 19-12, keyed by back-to-back kills by Jackson and a solo block by Murray. Krause added two kills around a block by Allick and Reilly to make it 23-14, and Allick put the ball down to give Nebraska set point before a TCU error closed out the 25-15 victory. NU held the Horned Frogs to a -.033 hitting percentage in the set. The Huskers had six blocks.

Set 2: TCU took a 13-9 lead after a 4-0 run. NU went on a 3-0 run with two Krause kills to bring the score to 13-12 and kills by Beason and Murray helped tie the score at 15-15. TCU made its lead 18-15, but Beason and Murray put down a kill apiece to bring the Big Red within one at 18-17. TCU grabbed a 22-20 lead, but the Big Red answered and pulled ahead 23-22 after kills by Krause and Allick. A Beason kill put the Huskers at set point and a back row attack violation from the Horned Frogs gave Nebraska the 25-23 set win.

Set 3: TCU gained a quick 5-1 lead. A kill from Jackson and an ace from Kennedi Orr brought NU within one at 8-7. Sparked by an ace and kill from Murray, the Big Red tied the score at 14-14. Murray’s fifth and sixth kills of the set helped NU gain an 18-16 lead, but the Horned Frogs tied the score at 18-18. TCU led 21-20 when a kill by Jackson and ace by Beason gave the Huskers a 22-21 advantage. The Horned Frogs scored three straight to grab set point, 24-22, and won 25-23.

Set 4: A Jackson kill and Orr’s second service ace gave Nebraska a 9-4 lead in the fourth set. The Big Red then went on a 5-0 run to make the score 18-7, led by three kills from Murray and two blocks by Jackson. NU maintained its lead for the rest of the set, and a TCU serving error put the Huskers at match point. Reilly registered a service ace to take the set, 25-13 and the match, 3-0.

Up Next: The Huskers will hit the road to face SMU in Dallas on Tuesday at 7 p.m. The match will be televised on the ACC Network and can be heard across the Huskers Radio Network.

Were the Huskers sandbagging a bit this last weekend?

Obviously no inside info, but it seemed the Ruhle & company didn’t throw the playbook at UTEP, in an attempt to give CU less film with which to prepare. Seemed they were particularly conservative on D, not showing many blitz packages.

Feel keys to the game for N will be aggressive defensive/blitzing, pounding the rock with Heavy RB rotation (pulling in there DBs), then drop the occasional dime (mid to deep). Should be a fun night.

Football Rhule wants raucous game day environment as Colorado comes to Lincoln

"I think it'll be a great, great, great atmosphere. Night game — people have all day to get themselves ready for the game," Matt Rhule said Monday during a press conference. "It should be loud and it should be a home-field advantage. It was loud there last year. Like I said: Sunday, let's all be Nebraska Nice on Sunday. It should be a loud, loud, raucous atmosphere."

We could hang with USC/LSU

The last 15 years or so, I'd watch the bigger games and think that we just couldn't hang with those guys, they are a clear step above us. Just don't feel like that right now. Now I think LSU would beat us, still think USC will be favored over us this year, but we can compete with them and will have a chance.

Besides Georgia, (I didn't see Texas) I didn't get the feeling that a team I was watching would just plain whoop us. Nice not to feel like a 3rd rate team anymore. I really only think the tippy top teams would embarrass now, we'd be competitive with all but the title contenders.

THIS WEEK'S NUMBERS
11 -
In Nebraska's victory over UTEP on Saturday, the Huskers had 11 players with a rushing attempt and 11 receivers catch a pass. That is the most players to have a rushing attempt and a reception since 11 players had a rushing attempt and 11 players had a reception against Northwestern in 2021.

200 - The Nebraska offense put up 507 yards of total offense in the season-opening victory over UTEP on Saturday. The Huskers topped 200 yards in both rushing and passing offense for the first time since 2022.

73 - Saturday's matchup will be the 73rd all-time meeting between Nebraska and Colorado. The schools met 63 straight seasons from 1948 to 2010 when they were members of the same conference. This will be the fourth meeting between the schools since 2018.

THE MATCHUP
Nebraska continues its four-game homestand to open the 2024 season on Saturday night when the Huskers take on the Colorado Buffaloes in a highly anticipated non-conference matchup. The battle between the two long-time rivals is set for 6:30 p.m. at Memorial Stadium. NBC will provide the national television coverage and the game can be heard on the Huskers Radio Network and Huskers App.

The Huskers kicked off the 2024 campaign with an impressive 40-7 victory over UTEP on Saturday. The Husker offense topped 40 points for the first time in two seasons and the 33-point victory margin was Nebraska's largest win in three seasons.

Nebraska showed balance on offense, topping 200 yards in both rushing and passing. Four running backs played a key role for Nebraska and true freshman quarterback Dylan Raiola had a successful debut with 238 yards and two touchdown passes. The Blackshirt defense continued to be stingy, allowing just seven points and 205 yards of offense to the Miners.

Colorado opened its season last Thursday night with a 31-26 victory over North Dakota State in Boulder. The Buffs' high-powered passing attack was on full display, as Colorado threw for 445 yards and averaged better than 17 yards per completion.

Saturday's matchup will be the fourth between Nebraska and Colorado in the past seven seasons. CU won close contests in both 2018 and 2019 before defeating the Huskers, 36-14, in Boulder last season. Nebraska will be looking for its 50th all-time victory over the Buffs, with the Huskers holding a 49-21-2 lead in the series.

ABOUT CU COACH DEION SANDERS
Deion Sanders is in his second season as the head coach at Colorado, and currently sports a 5-8 record with the Buffs, which included a 4-8 debut season in 2023.

Sanders came to Colorado after spending three years as the head coach at Jackson State, where he went 26-6 overall and won back-to-back Southwestern Athletic Conference championships, competing at the FCS level. The Tigers were 3-3 in his first year in 2020, but compiled an 11-2 record in 2021 and a 12-1 mark in 2022 to earn Sanders consecutive SWAC Coach of the Year honors.

Prior to joining the collegiate coaching ranks at Jackson State, Sanders had been involved in coaching for over a decade. Sanders was the offensive coordinator at Trinity Christian School in Cedar Hill, Texas, leading the Tigers to three straight Texas Association of Private and Parochial Schools (TAPPS) titles and a 42-3 record.

Sanders vs. Nebraska
Saturday's matchup is the second all-time meeting for Sanders against the Huskers after Colorado picked up a 36-14 win over the Big Red last season.
