Breaking News Nebraska reportedly hires Dana Holgorsen (NEWS & ANALYSIS)

Per Pete Thamel, Nebraska is adding Dana Holgorsen to the staff. News story below and a pair of analysis pieces from @Zack Carpenter below.

I've compared Thomas and Satterfield resume...

I'm so tired of hearing all this Rhule bashing. It reminds me of all the dumbasses who almost ran Osborne off to Colorado in the 80's. Rhule, can't make receivers do their job, he isn't running the routes, he's not making the check downs at the line of scrimmage, he is not stepping out of bounds on the 1 yardline on a kick off, this list can go on and on. Players execution falls back on the players and the position coaches and making any changes in those position coaches right now would absolutely cost us the rest of the games. Now, could Rhule make sure the play calls are what he wants and they get in and get to the LOS before 30 seconds, and could he set the expectation with the position coaches, yes!!! But firing guys at this point makes no sense, taking control of the play calling that is on Rhule for sure. If he is smart he will play the younger guys now and set things up for next year.
If there was internet in the 1980’s TO probably would have been fired. Definitely would not have been Three Nattys in the 1990’s.

It is clear that Satterfield and Foley are not getting it done and should be let go. Probably at least a few other assistants need to be evaluated and possibly let go. I think these steps will help going forward but it will take time to gel. What you will see is steady improvement like Iowa changing their OC. During Solich last year the OC (Cotton) and DC (Pelini) changes were immediate

Welcome, "Outside Eyes"!

Satterfield is the obvious “not a great coordinator” coach. Rhule apparently had to “suggest” to White that we needed to go to 4 man fronts during a game this year but at least I see in game adjustments from him that I believe he’s initiating. The offense has put tremendous pressure on our defense.

I think most if not all of our defensive staff is pretty damned good. The biggest issues I’ve seen there have been individual players blowing assignments. On offense it’s play design at times and play calling. Raiola is shell shocked and looks like a freshman now. That’s Satterfield’s fault.
Satt as OC---subpar;
Satt as TE coach---subpar;
McGuire WR coach----subpar;
Barthel RB coach---subpar;
Foley ST coach---subpar.
Some might say Raiola as OL coach----subpar.

That's half the staff. If 1/2 half of your staff is subpar, that's a bad coaching "staff."

Then you combine that with 3 games the defense couldn't get the ball away from the opposing offenses, N Iowa, Illinois, UCLA and there you have it.

Solution

We all need to be hoping that Rhule fixes the offense. This "fire rule" nonsense is wasted energy. He's not going anywhere, zero chance, nada, etc. I still like Rhule, but let's see if he can show some backbone. Assuming he make an offseason change at OC, I would say it's a THE defining moment of whether he's successful here or the next failure.
.. Rhule knows full well the fanbase view of Satterfield’s play calling. I don’t see any way Satterfield remains on staff.

Solution

problem is, we saw Satt had a problem last year.. and so did Rhule..

Rhule did bring in another OC guy to be QB coach..

However he sounds pretty defiant about 'what we are saying about Satt' and throws the players under the bus.

He's saying he's not doing any directing in the game.. (i don't know if true or not) but he sure doesn't seem to want to take any heat off Satt either.

It sort of seems like he is defending Satt overall, so I don't get any feeling that anything will change.

Satt will work extra hard and we will get another W, make our bowl game and the offense will come alive for another game or two, but eventually fall back down into Satt's normal comfort zone.. and nothing will change.

I hope to all heck, Satt just leaves at the end of the season.. otherwise there is zero indication that Rhule will make a change.
Soooo Rhule couldn’t see the problem supposedly yet he brought in Thomas as co/OC and QB coach. I haven’t seen Rhule throw a single player under the bus. He’s made it clear IMO opinion with what he’s done that he’s not happy with Satterfield’s job performance. He’s tried to help Satt but he may have no choice but to fire him.

Tom stated multiple times after he retired that he had kept underperforming assistants on staff and worked with them until he was sure they couldn’t cut it. Rhule I think has recognized now that Satt can’t cut it in the B1G. We’ll see what he does.

Welcome, "Outside Eyes"!

Someone has to be the “fall guy” for players not performing to a standard. All fingers should point to Satt. And if Rhule is the lone guy pointing at the players, he should instead point the thumb back at himself, because he’s next in the chain of command.
Players need to take accountability now also, they're getting to may $$$ to not take on some blame for lack luster performance. Time to earn those dollars!

Solution

It’s not going to happen. We’re pot committed. Nor would I want us to clean house. There are some good things he’s doing but he either needs to can Satt or take ownership of the offense. He said repeatedly that 18 points isn’t good enough. We need to give him a chance to fix it.

I’m not ready to say this is a bad staff top to bottom. There are obvious problems and having to can our DB coach late has really hurt us. The elephant in the room is Satterfield’s failure. IMO you start there and see what happens.
"Good" coaching staffs don't have teams shoot their wad the first half of the season against 4 out of 6 mostly pud teams, then go backwards the second half of the year for 2 straight years.

I think this is pretty accurate. You get to a certain point and you either ARE a good coach or you are not. I know there is experience factors and learning the ropes but this is not rocket science. If you have not "figured it out" at a certain point, you are probably not all of a sudden going to become a great coach.

Overall, top to bottom, this is just a bad coaching staff.

How hard do we think it would be to replace any, and I mean ANY, coach on this entire staff?

After 1 3/4 seasons, EVERY single coach has been exposed more than once.

The AD can motivate the shit out of the HC, the HC can motivate the shit out of the coordinators and position coaches.

At the end of the day----as a coach, you either have it or you don't.

Cignetti next stop

IF they make the playoff, IU will pay him with an extension.
I will not be one bit surprised to see Indiana beat OSU in Columbus in a couple weeks. This week the Buckeyes have Purdue, next week Northwestern, then Indiana at home.

Indiana, if they get past Michigan at home Saturday, then has a bye week heading into the road game at OSU. It's pretty obvious, Cignetti and his staff will have 3-4-5 things ready to go on offense that game they haven't showed this year.

I do look forward to that IND-OSU game cause its gonna be a real "class check" for Indiana and CIgnetti.

(It sucks when I have to look forward to other college games since NU continues to suck).

Sounds like the time Frost brought in outside consultants to teach tackling because we didn't have anyone on the roster that could wrap up a ball carrier.

The problem isn't every player on the roster.

The problem is, Rhule hired a SHIT coach to run his offense.

That can be fixed. Whether or not Rhule has the nads to do it remains to be seen.
I think you are talking about smilin Mike and the rugby tackling deal.
