Yeah that was kind of the first thing that came to mind for me too - that there needs to be an explanation for a bunch of money disappearing.I've no idea if Ohtani has a gambling problem...but I think he was gambling and he's blaming somebody else now, because he gpt caught red handed by being a moron.
I think he's rich enough to pay the guy he is blaming for it, a lot of money to go along with it, and the guy will probably go along with it because he likes, you know, breathing.
my money has been disappearing for yearsYeah that was kind of the first thing that came to mind for me too - that there needs to be an explanation for a bunch of money disappearing.
Maybe you also need to fire your bag man!my money has been disappearing for years

a counter:I’m not buying it. Sounds like he thought he could give the money to his interpreter to place the bets and nobody would connect the dots(dumb). And now that he got caught he’s saying the interpreter stole the money from him to gamble. Doesn’t pass the smell test IMO. Why would the interpreter have access to Ohtani’s money? How would Ohtani not notice over 4 million missing?
Looks like Ohtani is paying off his interpreter to take the fall for him. At least from 10,000 ft that’s what it looks like.
a counter:
embezzlement happens literally all the time with athletes/celebs and is committed by the people closest to the star. literally all the time.
this guy has been with Shohei every minute of every day since coming to America
when you're worth a billion dollars (also literally), $4M is peanuts
Stories don't usually change if they are the truth unless money or fame is involved.Doesn't pass the smell test....hope i'm wrong....but it looks like somebody is taking the fall for somebody else, on the surface.
IF true, would be interesting to see the betting sheets on the games that were allegedly wagered on.Know many bookies that are willing to give $4.5 mil credit limits to colleagues or close friends of rich people? Seems quite odd indeed.
said it before and will say it again - I think it should be perfectly fine and, in fact, encouraged for athletes to bet on themselves/their teams TO WINIF true, would be interesting to see the betting sheets on the games that were allegedly wagered on.
I haven't followed this or read any account of it, but IF he wagered on games he was playing in OR pitching that's a whole different can of worms.
I think the thing with gambling by athletes is that if there is any question to the integrity of the game, everything falls apart.said it before and will say it again - I think it should be perfectly fine and, in fact, encouraged for athletes to bet on themselves/their teams TO WIN
fighters can do it - there is plenty of precedent
if an athlete is caught betting AGAINST his team, it's a no safety net, no exception immediate lifetime ban from their sport
I don't understand why this would be a bad thing. the only "con" people ever post is players might try too hard.
I know this is the default argumentI think the thing with gambling by athletes is that if there is any question to the integrity of the game, everything falls apart.
We did some work for ADM and if you spit in the parking lot, you were banned from the facility. Why? Because if you know spitting in the parking lot means you’re banned, you sure as hell aren’t going to spit when you’re in the facility.
Most sports have taken a similar approach.
Agreed that betting on yourself should be accepted. But team sports seem to have gone with the keep it away at all costs strategy.I know this is the default argument
I just don't understand what betting on your team TO WIN does to harm the integrity of any game, especially when an instant lifetime ban is on the table for anyone who fades their team (your ADM example)
again - there is like 200 years of precedent for this in boxing

as stated - permanent and instant lifetime ban if caught betting against your teamBoxing is one of the most crooked and fixed sports ever...and the problem isn't betting on your team to win, it's the fallout from the guys who will do it and lose...and what they do next. Everything is in question after somebody loses a 6 figure bet and that guy is playing in the next game...
There's never been an easier team sport to fix than basketball. All you need is that 25-30 point scorer to "just miss" his shots at crucial times and that'll do it. Its hard to make shots, its easier than shit to "just miss."as stated - permanent and instant lifetime ban if caught betting against your team
nothing would be in question any differently than it is today
but with a lifetime permanent ban in play for anyone who bets AGAINST his team, the worry about players throwing games would be identical to what it is todayThere's never been an easier team sport to fix than basketball. You're right because you can get into the, "well, I bet 50K on my team to win, and we lost."I think they need to protect these guys from themselves in a way. There’s a lot of un-intelligent professional athletes out there. If you allow them to legally bet on their own teams to win and they don’t, they could dig themselves into a big financial holes which opens up a lot of possibilities for them to make it right if you know what I mean.

Other than a jock pulling up to finish 3rd or 4th instead of 2nd or 3rd.There's never been an easier team sport to fix than basketball. All you need is that 25-30 point scorer to "just miss" his shots at crucial times and that'll do it. Its hard to make shots, its easier than shit to "just miss."
For a Japanese family honor is everything. I doubt the interpreter is lying about this publicly. It’s possible he’s covering for Ohtani but it’s amazing how deep of a hole a gambling addict will dig.Well IDK what happened and it’s possible he really stole the money. But it’s fishy that Ohtani didn’t fire him or publicly have any problem with the 4+ million missing until he was under investigation. Like I said, it’s possible the money was stolen, but it’s not easy to steal 4 million from someone and not have them find out.
If I’m a betting man 😉 it looks more like the interpreter is taking the fall than theft/embezzlement. Since I wasn’t there I gotta go with what looks more likely to me. If/when more information is available I may change my mind.
If Ohtani is considered his superior or boss in this situation, he sure as **** would lie for him.For a Japanese family honor is everything. I doubt the interpreter is lying about this publicly. It’s possible he’s covering for Ohtani but it’s amazing how deep of a hole a gambling addict will dig.
They fired him.If Ohtani is considered his superior or boss in this situation, he sure as **** would lie for him.
I have not really been able to think of a really strong reason why a player should not be able to bet on their team to win (money line).I know this is the default argument

that's it. no props.I have not really been able to think of a really strong reason why a player should not be able to bet on their team to win (money line).
But...beyond a money line wager, would there be any restrictions? I can think of plenty of scenarios where that would be a big problem.
this is a good pointFor a Japanese family honor is everything. I doubt the interpreter is lying about this publicly. It’s possible he’s covering for Ohtani but it’s amazing how deep of a hole a gambling addict will dig.
Thanks, I'll have my son tell Kent you send your regards. LOLOther than a jock pulling up to finish 3rd or 4th instead of 2nd or 3rd.
Desormeaux is the worst…even without him being a drunken buffoon.
You did say “team” though.
I’d bet Pat Valenzuela on a horse right now even though he’s like 59. Best gate and speed rider I’ve ever seen. Thanks, I'll have my son tell Kent you send your regards. LOL
So, Pelini, you don't think these guys are friends? Just watch the 2005 Kentucky Derby race Giacomo won. At a point, late in the race Gary Stevens was on a horse that was "finished" at the 1/8th pole. Mike Smith was closing late after the insane pace early in the race. I promise you, and Mike has said this publicly, "Gary and I are very good friends, he knew his horse was finished, I had no place to go, and I looked at Gary, and he looked at me, then moved his horse over so I could come through the hole." That played a part in that horse, and everyone in my family, betting that $ 100.00+ winner in the Derby.
At the end of the day, it was a Hall of Fame ride by Mike, but if Stevens doesn't move his horse out of the way, Mike probably runs 3rd or 4th that day. There was a time when Mike, Gary and Kent were all drunks.
At a point in his career, Kent was as good as anyone in the business, but yes, he does like his booze and on occassion is inebriated when he gets in the saddle. In fact, he was tested one day, and dismissed off his rides because he was legally drunk.
You gotta love this sport. Another time I'll tell you when my son played golf with Smith, Stevens and Desormeaux and they were having coffee, yes coffee, in the clubhouse. My son called me up and said, "Hey, Pops, bet whatever you want on China Doll tomorrow." And I did, and yes, she won just like it was explained to me it would happen. She only paid $20.00+, but that money spent just fine.
Sorry to bore you with some added fuel for your fire.
If you want some real doozies, my son used to date Valenzuela's daughter.
10-4. Honestly...I think I almost love it. Imagine the entertainment value of a star player publicly proclaiming a $1M bet before a big game...that's it. no props.
your team, moneyline, to win.
it's very, very easy with today's technology and the extremely friendly relationship sportsbooks already have with leagues to enforce this very rigid, very strict allowance.
professional sports only, also.
Thanks, I'll have my son tell Kent you send your regards. LOL
