This is easily the least talented team I have ever seen

I'm trying to enjoy the victory, because I don't think we win many more this year. I also don't think it's appropriate to call any players out specifically, but it's obvious that we have very little speed on defense, and possibly the worst possible scheme for our current personnel.

The issues on offense are less glaring, but I'm certain that we will really struggle to run the ball in the Big 10. Our line gets zero push. We are going to have to play some flawless games to beat anyone with a pulse this year, and to this point we have been ridiculously sloppy in al phases.

True but Southern Miss has arguably been the least talented team in all of D-I football the past few years. Only 2 C-USA wins in the last 3 years. If they had a decent kicker they probably beat us (4 times they didn't score in the red zone).

I hate saying this but I actually think it's less about talent at this point. The players either need to learn the system better or the system needs to be changed. What scares me is I think it may be the latter

Gee I wonder why old Ross didn't get picked up by some big time program to coordinate their recruiting efforts.......

Let me ask you this, do you think we will have a single player drafted this year?

Well.....you're wrong. It's clearly a talent issue.

Considering we have 18 returning starters next year and our seniors are pretty average, probably doubtful. I felt like we had some pretty talented DB's last year but now they're not talented. Why is that?

It wasn't a talent issue before the year. It was a coaching issue. You can't have it both ways. I know we are weak at d end and linebacker but the dbs are mainly back. They were pretty solid across the board last year in a lot of statistics. We are now horrible. What gives? We were also getting pressure on the Southern Miss qb today and they still got burned. We can also add in the penalties and special teams play too. Some of this falls on poor coaching.

We didn't have any talented DBs last year either , just a slightly better pass rush

The last talented ones graduated two years ago.

You keep saying that. But people were pointing out Pelinis recruiting issues for years. With that said we should not be this bad on D. Something is missing for sure.

So a slightly worse pass rush is accounting for teams averaging 380 yards passing against us? Tough for me to believe that
And josh Mitchell was head and shoulder better In coverage than anyone we currently have... He couldnt tackle well but stuck to receivers. our lbs also were much better in coverage last year.

I'd wait till the end of the season and see if they finish better than 5-7 first.

I do because I heard the same argument from the Solich to Callahan change. It was the same exact talk of no talent. This team has talent capable of winning 9 games. The past indicates this. All I heard for the past few years, anyone can win 9 games. Our schedule is favorable with most of our tough games at home. Our defense better get better fast because our offense won't be moving the ball as easily in BIG play. We will see much better defenses.

Mark recruited these players then didn't get them ready to play. Now Riley and his staff has to clean his mess up.

That was the talk. Anyone can win 9 games. Riley might, but it's going to take a 1.5 seasons to do so.

Then we should all probably stop posting until the end of the season, seeing there is nothing else we can talk about, unless it's pro-Riley.

I'd sure like it if you would quit posting since you aren't a real Husker fan.

Define "real" for me, please. If you mean I don't post based on how much I want to hump Eichorst's leg, then yes, I'm not a "real" Husker fan. I guess it's all about semantics.

Apparently recruiting rankings don't mean anything. Until we suddenly find ourselves in the upper echelon. Then it matters. Until we lose.

Yea I guess Southern Miss has a team composite ranking of 25th or higher like we have lol...at some point we have to stop blaming talent. Next week scares me with wes lunt slinging it

It's a two way street folks. You need talent and coaching. Nebraska is lacking in both, not one or the other.
Does Nebraska have Ohio State or Bama talent? No. Do 126 other teams have that much better talent than Nebraska to justify Nebraska's 126th ranked pass defense? Nope.

We didn't have any talented DB's back in 2008 either and none of it was Bo's fault. Our defensive scheme is downright horrid, there is no other way to put it..

Don't worry about Illinois. They are terrible. Worry about Northwestern. They will take the fight to us.

There goes that "9 games" talk again. I'm so sick of hearing that. Who cares of you win 6, 4, 8, or 9...if you KNOW the product/talent on the field can't bring anything home except the Heroes Trophy. We only started paying attention to this "9 games" BS when NU quit winning championships. I want the talent and the coaching staff to bring championships back. And we clearly don't have the talent for that right now.

Here is where you are wrong. I keep hearing how much the BIG west has sucked still sucks. I have read countless times how an average coach can sleep walk into 9 wins in the BIG west. Mike Riley should be able to get to 9 wins. That is a reasonable goal.

Sure. The B1G West sucks. What have you seen out of NU to show that we're not a part of the suck? Our countless come from behind victories against other division teams that suck? Or getting drilled by last year's winner of the west, who then got embarrassed in the championship game. I'm telling you, I want to win 9 and championships as much as you do. But we need to accept that we're a very average team now. Talent-wise for sure. Coaching-wise we'll see. I love the goal of winning the division.

I think what hid many of our talent deficiencies last year was AA.

No blocking, no problem.

Bad play call, no problem.

He carried the team a lot.

This year = No AA = Problem.

I should add that last year Pelini masked talent deficiencies on his defense by over commiting to pass defense and gave up the run. This year Banker is trying to focus on the run, but it's been several years since we've had enough talent to cover both well.

I'm stand by my comment post-Miami that we need at least one JuCo laden class before we get to "average" talent on the field.

Absolutely agree with this. Good post.

There were 21 players on the 2008 roster that played in the NFL. It was a way more talented roster. There was only one DB (Asante) who started who was an NFL talent, but there was also a guy named Suh on that team that single handedly created a pass rush.

If Bo were here, with a lot of luck, he'd be sitting at 2-2. The nice thing is, Riley is emotionally mature enough to deal with criticism, and I am looking forward to the team gradually getting better, unlike in the past. Thanks for stopping by.

OH YEAH? Well we've got the talent to win 9 games, and if we don't get that, then we don't get to brag about being the only other team other than Alabama and Oregon who has won at least 9 games over the last 7 years, and that will really be a downer and will be proof that Riley was a terrible hire!!!!
Whose with me! Tulsa? NUfaninOUland? Wisco? Spinner? Come on Fellas!!

Dude I want to agree with you. I really do. But after 4 games I'm just not convinced we have the talent to win 9. And I still do believe that the only reason we cling to it so tightly is b/c we're not winning championships.

If you blame this on talent you know nothing about football....sorry. Our talent is the only reason we won today and the only reason we came back last week. Our woes are because we are not prepared to play, we make mental mistakes, we have some poor play calling on d (there was some good, too), too many penalties and too much confusion. Seriously people stop blaming the kids. We have some good ones. Not great, but good enough to blow out southern miss for Petes sake!!!!

And Bo would have lost today and been 1-3. Doesn't mean we can't hold this staff accountable!
