The coaching carousel is mostly just dumb luck

Frost had potential but personal problems got in the way.
chatter on ucf boards about his potential return to orlando. personal problems are none of my business. i hope he's well now. he was on staff here in manhattan for a year. i've always liked him. thought he was the perfect hire and would be uber successful in lincoln.

So, you spew your crap on the ucf board too?

He did pretty well. Too bad we didn't get some ace recruiters for him.
Too bad HE didn't get some ace recruiters for him. And too bad that he let teams like Wisconsin and UCLA run through his defense. There was nobody to blame for his inadequacies but him.

You think him firing all his players happened by accident?

He obviously had a plan
Yes he has a plan, but his plan is reliant on getting players like Travis Hunter and Sheduer Sanders in the transfer portal, year after year.

If Cignetti was this stud coach everyone thinks he is, why didn't anyone take a chance on him as a HC until he was 50+ and why didn't he have a P4 job before he was 62+?

I will reserve judgement on how great of P4 coach either is until all of their initial transfers leave. Indiana is literally led by a bunch of senior transfers many of whom played for Cignetti at JMU. What will they look like next year? Sanders is losing his sons and Hunter. Who do they have that is going to replace that production. They need to find 2 guys to replace Hunter.

If those 2 can do nothing but bring in transfers from other schools, many of those players were mid range players from G5 schools, and win then great. I just don't know how successful that can be long term. It is one thing to be able to have a 50% success rate by developing players over 4-5 years, its another to get a 50% success rate when bringing in a bunch of 1 and 2 year guys on annually.

I agree with everything here. nobody knows how it will work out.

my post was a response to the now 2 people who don't believe Deion had any sort of plan at all, which is ridiculous.

maybe we will outpace them in the long run. maybe we won't.

Rhule & Co are having a really hard time replacing the trash they inherited at the moment. we are relying heavily on SRs from Frost's tenure all over the field.

what will we look like when "experienced players" like Robinson, Nash, half our OL & our entire linebacking corps moves on?

the homers will say better. the realists will say I have no idea. if there's any development taking place, it's happening behind closed doors because we sure as hell don't see it show up on the field.

...what's kind of interesting is we are 1.5yrs into prime's tenure, and we still aren't sure how it's going to work out long term but i think it's easy to say he has exceeded many posters expectations. Colorado is getting better, we appear to be getting worse.

i still think prime bolts at the end of the year but unless the wheels fall off between now and then, i think you have to call his time there a success.

I am not sure if they are getting better or if the competition is getting worse. As far as expectations, many thought he was going to come in and turn it around immediately. Then when he won his first 3 games, he was on every show and every talking head was singing his praises. Then they lost 8 of 9, that is when the expectations sort of tanked. Coming into this season, most of the expectations were lower because of how they finished last year. This year all of their wins are against FCS or teams with losing records with the exception of G6 Colorado St (4-3 MWC). They only have 3 games left against teams who have a winning record currently; Cincinnati, Texas Tech and Utah. plus games against Kansas and Oklahoma St both with losing records currently.

Colorado is fools gold. Their record is mostly the product of being in the weakest of the P4 conferences.

agree on national perception, but i wasn't speaking to those...i was referring to posters on this board who thought he would be a disaster

..and he did win 4X as many games last year as the prior guy ...their loss to K-State was a great game, yes they lost but were right there.

i ain't saying he's bear bryant...but all things considered, i think he has done pretty good there and I do think they are getting better and will end the season on a decent note so I am projecting a little here and I admit it

he took over the single worst P5/4 program in the country. empty stadium, empty cupboard, complete afterthoughts in every possible respect.

now they're 5-2 and selling out nearly every home game, making money like an actual P4 program.

it is downright shocking what he's done there (in a larger sense than just W/L record) in so little time, regardless of how he's done it or how many sensitive dudes he's upset along the way.

NFL is different. Nick Saban is a failed NFL coach. I guess by your logic, LSU and Alabama shouldn't have hired Nick, since he failed in the NFL.
Saban wasn't fired from the NFL, he left on his own accord after 1 winning season and 1 losing season

far from a failure

your schtick is funny, especially when people fall for it ass over teakettle like ITT

excited for your "B1G is deep and competitive" posts when the league is swept out of the playoffs this Christmas Season!

In case you haven't noticed, there are several obsessed anti-Deion posters on here. Two of the leaders in the "we hate Deion more than we like Nebraska" clubhouse

Nick Saban's NFL record was 15-17. He wasn't exactly tearing it up in the NFL.

9-7 then 6-10

Dolphins would've happily employed him long after he decided to leave.

both seasons, obviously, were better than little matt produced in his NFL tenure before being unceremoniously laughed out of the league.

most people like to believe Saban failed miserably in the NFL as a way to cope with other things that have nothing to do with Saban or the NFL.

There were also posters on this board claiming he would "win championships" and "rake in 5-stars". The expectations for him were through the roof, because he used to run fast, and had" never failed at anything in his life". Now all the sudden he is exceediting all expectations by going 9-10 with multiple 1st round draft picks he brought with him? OK.

this is the closest thing I can find to your claim in this post:

I think Prime is a huge risk. I mean I'm here for it, as he could bring in a loaded roster and potentially win championships, but I would go into it knowing it's a huge risk and it could fail miserably.

There were more than that. Plenty of people on here claimed he would bring in top classes and that would lead to titles. Both those that wanted Nebraska to take a chance on him and those who made the claims after he was hired at Colorado.

Is it really the closest thing? Just couldn't find the exact quotes, which have been recently from posters in this thread? Just no luck with those huh?

And yes, I said I could have got on board with the hiring at the time. I didn't predict or guarantee anything and I also pointing out it could be a trainwreck. The hope of everyone looking at him was he would bring in top talent.

Then it turned out he didn't actually coach or recruit and was just playing daddy ball, letting his sons skip practice, forcing the team to attend his son's rap concert, etc. So it became obvious he wasn't a serious coach, and I was relieved he was CU's problem. You do know it is OK to change an opinion once there new evidence right? Now that it is obvious he isn't a serious coach, it is OK to admit that, even if you assumed it was some great hire.

But instead, you and the superfans have decided to white knight for the coach of CU day night. I was stalked by you and the other "Coach Prime" superfans relentlessly for pointing out all the potential issues with the hire, which have been true and then some.

no luck.

I do recall the nut who went full blown race war about it.

but, just like the "Saban was a failure in the NFL" stuff, the Prime stuff is largely overblown.

and I do still think he's a serious coach who will be there next year after his kids have left.

as I've said before, he seems to do what he says he's going to do even if it's not popular. wouldn't that be nice.

I dont remember a single post like that. I remember some more optimistic than others..but not quite like that

there's no use attempting logic with @headcard on this topic

he is far too emotional

On the contrary. You are clearly emotional about "Coach Prime". You dug your heals in and have been all about him from day one. For some reason, he means a lot to you, and you simply can not handle any criticism towards the guy and rally your fellow superfans anytime you think someone may criticise him. It's an odd obsession you guys have (especially on a Nebraska message board) , but to each their own.

again, this is laughably untrue.

there are plenty of posts I've made to the contrary.

your panties instantly wad upon seeing his name. he is your Voldemort.

it's fine. I have no issue with it. it's perfectly on brand.

the jovial little elf we have running our program will always have at least 1 supporter no matter what happens. that's a good thing.

lou holtz won a national championship at notre dame after quitting the ny jets job famously saying beforehand:
“We’re making progress; now we can break out of the huddle without anybody getting killed in the confusion.”

and after quitting:
"God did not put Lou Holtz on this earth to coach in the pros."

I do think Deion got lucky this year. Last year when he had to play in a tough Pac 12 Conference he was unsuccessful. This year the Big 12 is not good and to make it even better for Colorado, Utah that is normally pretty solid and well run is having a meltdown. The Big 12 plays no defense. Probably why OU is not doing well in the SEC. I think Deion's goals from the start have been to get Travis Hunter a Heisman and to get his son Shadeur exposure, so he is drafted high. He is going to come close with Hunter (he will make the top 3) and all the NFL guys that come on Cowherd, Gottleib and Dan Patrick think Shadeur could be the top QB drafted. I do not think Deion is dumb for a minute. I think he will take this year's success and parlay it into a better gig for himself. I am not sure the new gig will even involve coaching.
