Spring game thread

Honestly, I didn't watch much today because of a prior engagement.
It looks like HH is more of a slinger than a thrower. Slings the ball but doesn't get rid of the ball quickly. A real hoss running it though.

Its strictly a 2 horse race at QB. If CT comes back, no way, other than an injury HH, Purdy, Logan, Torres see any meaningful time at QB.

Only watched half of a quarter, but other than being sloppy with the ball, I really liked what I saw. Whole lotta guys are carrying a whole lot less fat than we've seen for almost a decade.

Being unfair here, but, Gilbert should block more and be thrown to less. I seen way too many drops by way too many guys.

Enough criticism here, like I say, I only watched a small portion. If the ball carriers weren't focused on holding onto the ball and the receivers catching every routine ball, I assume they will be reminded daily. When you're 4-8, those things have to be as flawless as possible. We didn't make the young receiver coach or tight end coach look very good today.

Looks like the freshmen and the kids they brought in are going to really be good additions, especially on defense.
Would appreciate your thoughts after you've had time to look at the replay.

HH absolutely held the ball too long today

But he did so while looking downfield
I'll watch the replay tonight, especially HH throwing the ball at 25% speed, and see if it's his natural motion because if it is, he will throw the ball low consistently. He has a lot of physical talent, but at this level, you're gotta make the routine throws look easy.

I plan on rewatching and doing a more in depth analysis after review (i get bored at work). But a quick impression:

Second string defense looks much more competent than second string offense as someone else already pointed out.

Starting offense will have stars and look to be explosive, at least against less than artist attacking defenses (usual B1G plodders). Depth is a concern, but should improve with fall camp as pieces fall into place on the depth chart.

Young defenders looked AWESOME. It's great having such non losing energy that can inject in immediately to help turn the losing culture.

O line looked like it should at bare minimum, which is enough to win the 7-8 games we should be winning. D line looked better than anticipated tbh, but depth is obviously a concern.

Special teams looked... Improved, but still lots of work needed. Cool seeing fakes... Doubt we see many in season except certain scenarios. Need to improve field goals. Glad we hit that 49 yarder, but that was with the wind at their backs. Looking forward to Tristan arriving into campus and getting started hopefully displacing Bleekrode. He's a great backup kicker though.

It'll be Sims vs CT. Not sure who is better, but today was impressive from Sims as limited as it was. CT is still our guy in my mind until proven otherwise in fall call though. I trust Rhule makes the right decision, and I'm hopeful whoever isn't starter remains to be backup. Who WILL play at some point in the season no doubt.
Not sure how you could say special teams looked improved. Two missed kicks at least. Altered kick offs. Punting?

There's no doubt there will be a lot of things that I'm gonna like. The turnovers and dropped passes, can be corrected, they just have to do what those kids have been doing their whole life. Right? RBs hold onto the ball into contact, receivers don't drop easily catchable balls. It's correctible. Not fair for me to criticize other parts of the game since I watched so little, but the fumbles and dropped passes stand out to every fan that watched the game.

We've spent 8 years beating ourselves, that shit has to change.

Well, they actually ran out of the end zone and got to the 20. Haven't seen that since Christ was a corporal. Gang-tackling on the returns. One made kick was wind-assisted but was for 49 yards. I think one of the missed kicks was under 40 but against the wind. Probably should have made that. In all, I thought the ST looked improved. Not great but not awful.

I'm hoping the Westside kid can give Timmy the boot. He doesn't inspire much confidence unfortunately.

Lots of gang tackling. I like gang tackling.

Disappointed Fidone didn’t get more looks but I think he can be a big part of this offense this coming fall..

Gilbert was very disappointing, he looked more like Tarzan but caught like Jane..

The young defensive players were a pleasant surprise..

Fidone looked good catching with his hands.

Gilbert’s first drop was tough, second one I believe was tipped. Both were wobbly change ups.
