Spring game thread

Fidone looked good catching with his hands.

Gilbert’s first drop was tough, second one I believe was tipped. Both were wobbly change ups.
Only catches I seen Fidone make were in pregame warmups.. He’s a secret weapon not shown yet..

Natural hands catcher unlike M Washington

Except that the response was directed at someone else dude. Your feelings on Mickey have nothing to do with it.
Jeans had asked earlier if we had ever had a black DC. It was all part of the conversation about rooting for a black QB or coach to get a shot or have success. I understand completely the concern about the hiring practices of GMs and ADs but also realize that you can’t legislate it. Black QBs abound now and I truly think coaches and GMs are color blind with that. Black coaches are getting opportunities to work their way up the ladder. It has to be experience and merit based.

College Football’s largest spring game attendance marks:

  1. Ohio State Buckeyes — 75,122
  2. Penn State Nittany Lions — 68,000
  3. Nebraska Cornhuskers — 66,045
  4. Alabama Crimson Tide — 58,710
  5. Tennessee Volunteers — 58,473
  6. Oklahoma Sooners — 54,409
  7. Georgia Bulldogs — 54,000
  8. South Carolina Gamecocks — 51,000
  9. Clemson Tigers — 50,000
  10. Colorado Buffaloes — 47,277
  11. USC Trojans — 33,427
  12. Florida State Seminoles — 33,107
As you can see, there are plenty of usual suspects littered throughout the attendance rankings. The Big Ten claimed the top three spots, with Ohio State, Penn State and Nebraska feeling the football fever at the moment.

I really don’t get the M Washington hate…the guy almost makes more grabs outside of his frame than not…he’s long and has excellent hands which is why he will be a very close second contributor this season behind Kemp, good health provided.

The QB performances in this game rank like this:

1. Sims (by a ways)
2. Torres
3. Purdy
4. HH (by a ways)

People are going easy on HH here saying he “wasn’t great” but he was god awful. Ran into pressure more than once to result in lame ducks. Lame ducks even without pressure. Fumbling snaps. His one good run was maybe the one time all day that the edge of that defense completely f+}*#ed up and that “TD drive” was led by the defense that forced the turnover and a short field, not Haarberg. You know I am rooting for him but he has a lot to fix before being a P5 QB. His best option (pun intended) would be Navy.

We will be in great shape with CT and Sims both in the QB room. I still hope CT gets the nod but Sims impressed yesterday. Still needs work on throws over 20 yards.

I really like Torres as a passer. He had maybe 3 bad decisions but he’s young. He’s very decisive and gets the ball out quick and on-time. He has a real future at QB if he cleans it up even a little bit.

O-line looked better but not great. This remains the biggest concern for this season. Hopefully the defense is just that good.

The defensive coaching by Tony White looks unbelievable compared to what we’re used to. All the way down to the 4th team defenders, they are all playing their spots and reacting quickly. I am blown away by how good that side looked with so many young players making huge plays. White was a HUGE hire. They made the offense work very hard for everything. They look exactly like Syracuse with all the movement, blitzing and flying around. That’s the biggest takeaway from this game.

HH’s long run was a triple option in which the edge did what he was supposed to do (take the dive), he read it perfectly, made two guys miss and nearly went to the house.

Go back and watch Washington last year. As inconsistent at the catch point as exists. Tons of drops.

Did Torres throw a single spiral all day?

Agree about White.

Didn’t read the rest. Probably won’t, either.
Lol ok. There were 2 defenders that dove for the back. One of them should’ve played the QB. Tony White himself said they screwed that play up. It was a good read by Haarberg, I’ll give him that. But come on dude…I thought you were all about reality and facts. Don’t be a bitter bitch just because your boy laid a massive egg… Read the room. Unless you have a personal connection with him, just let it go and admit he looked bad.

No. About as bad as a take can get saying Washington can’t catch. He caught more balls than HH completed…Torres completed over 4 times the passes HH did for over 66 times the amount of yards while looking 1000 times better doing it. These are just the facts from the stat sheet. You hate Torres too now? 😂

Torres? Guess I didn’t see that.

He generally got the ball out quicker than all other QBs which is partly why he tied Sims for the lead in completions. Granted they called a different offense for him but for a young guy against a well coached defense, he did relatively well.
I like the fact that they called a different offense for him. It makes no sense to me to "try to force a square peg in a round hole". Rhule said all along he was going to adjust the schemes to suit the talents of players and that's a change I very much like. That said, I won't be surprised if Torres winds up in the portal.

It’s possible they could call an offense for him if he ends up a starter here someday. He is mildly comparable to Rattler who Satterfield coached and they threw the ball a lot. Rattler hardly ever ran. It just may not be what Rhule wants to run here in Lincoln so I wouldn’t be surprised to see him go either.

Rattler has a top-of-his-draft-class arm

he and Torres don't belong in the same paragraph, and that's not a knock on Torres

From Rhule: “Torres has the strongest arm on the team.” So that’s stronger than Sims and HH who both have NFL arms. He’s also mildly comparable to Rattlers running ability which was the context of the post making the case that Satterfield could start him if he had to and he developed enough. For the record I don’t think Rattler is that good.

strong arm is great But as the Niners and other NFL teams are figuring out, cognitive function is very important. They’ve always known that accuracy is irreplaceable. Tanner Lee had a great arm. Not so much on the decision making.

Agree. Torres was still way more accurate and more decisive than HH was. He didn’t take a 15 yard sack or fumble snaps. We really don’t have much ready to roll behind the top two at the moment but hopefully we don’t need it. I wanted HH to outplay those other two more than anyone, because he has all the potential and he’s a local kid but he just didn’t show well at all.

Honestly I didn’t pay as much attention to Torres as I should have because I had already decided he wasn’t in the mix and was probably 2 years away from playing. Maybe he’s the # 3 now? I still wish Synek would have stuck it out. He’s a good player.

Torres's balls floated quite a bit

weak throw to a wide open guy on his 2nd attempt:

2 plays later he fumbled a straight I formation handoff after hitting the ball off the FB's hip. turnover on 3rd and short.

funny how selective memories can be when you're serving an agenda

first half for Torres: 2 completions (one on a screen pass to the RB), 2 turnovers, 1 first down

Torres's best throw, a 9-yd dig to the TE:

he completed a checkdown on 3rd and short later this series

he looked like a young kid with a good enough arm and some ability to extend plays.

long way to go, however. here's him throwing a dropped pick after locking onto his target on play action (triple coverage):

later made a nice play on 3rd and long, although he still locked onto his target. patient, let him clear, good pass pro, nice gain:

Torres threw an interception to end that drive, however:

I posted his plays above. to summarize:

1 terrible fumble lost hitting the fullback's hip
1 near interception into triple coverage
1 actual interception at mid-field

two really nice completions

it's a shame our past 2 regimes were in so far over their heads. HH/Torres at least have the makings of P5 quarterbacks with proper time/attention.

People must realize anymore to have a good #3 QB - good luck. They will usually never see the field anyways.

I would take HH to play this year over Torres & Purdy easily. He's a clear #3 imo.

He can run effectively enough and would only ask him to throw 15x a game, but with CT and Sims this convo is probably irrelevant.

here's Torres's final drive, and summarized:

2 good short completions, 1st down
likely intentional grounding
terrible incompletion
2 good short completions, 1st down
short run/scramble
sack
near INT into triple coverage
near completion on a nice play he extended with his legs

100% agree with every word, Jabroni

these are fun spring discussions :)

I think Torres is worth hanging onto if at all possible

QBs ranked:
1. Sims/CT
3. Haarberg
4. Torres
5. purdy
6. smothers

Lol man you’re really struggling with this HH obsession…Torres was still better than -1 Haarberg. Funny how you talk about selective memories but won’t post ALL of Haarberg’s plays 😂 Something about a well documented agenda…?? The word is “hypocrisy.”

I’m at least saying everyone behind the top two mostly sucked in that game. You’re making excuses for HH at every turn. Not too many are with you on this. He had a bad game. It’s not the end of the world, guy. They’re both intriguing prospects, Torres just throws more ropes between the numbers with far more urgency. We just have different eye tests. Hope they both stay and develop!

I will post them, no problem.

for Torres, I was simply replying to your post about no fumbled snaps/decisiveness and expanded to every play in an attempt not to pass judgement. there were a couple good ones. some really really bad ones.

quote an excuse in the meantime. thanks.

speaking of the eye test, did you think the game was scripted?

HH will NEVER be more than a gimmick wildcat QB at Nebraska. You don't "develop" anymore. In 2023 players that are three years in the system should be ready to play - they may sit because there is talent ahead of them but they are not going to "feel it" year 4-5. You are what you are at that point.

we just watched a year 4 & 5 quarterback win back to back national titles

but, please, continue to wow us with your insight

My problem with HH is that many NFL QB gurus say that you can’t teach accuracy. I’ve heard multiple guys say you can coach mechanics but it all goes out the window and they revert to their natural mechanics when the bullets are flying.

HH is actually a better fit for what Tim Beck ran
