Spring game thread

Defense might be 20% better but that’s it. The o line might be better but I didn’t see it specially in second half. I really like Rhule but EVERYTHING I saw today just seemed to show everything that was said over the last two months was strictly coach speak. Zero improvement on special teams no running game and we put the ball on the ground more in this spring game then we did all last season. I was expecting a 7 or 8 win season now we’ll be lucky to get six. Yes, I hope I’m wrong.

Didn’t Austin play some center at times? College coaching jobs are merit based with a good deal of who you’ve worked with before thrown in. I’m not sure why anybody would have expected Frost or Riley to bring along anybody other than Chin and Banker. No doubt BC wishes he had gone outside his buddy pool
I agree.

And if they suck they suck. No matter who it is or what race they are.

I so hoped Frost would work out.

He was still a great player for us.

I plan on rewatching and doing a more in depth analysis after review (i get bored at work). But a quick impression:

Second string defense looks much more competent than second string offense as someone else already pointed out.

Starting offense will have stars and look to be explosive, at least against less than artist attacking defenses (usual B1G plodders). Depth is a concern, but should improve with fall camp as pieces fall into place on the depth chart.

Young defenders looked AWESOME. It's great having such non losing energy that can inject in immediately to help turn the losing culture.

O line looked like it should at bare minimum, which is enough to win the 7-8 games we should be winning. D line looked better than anticipated tbh, but depth is obviously a concern.

Special teams looked... Improved, but still lots of work needed. Cool seeing fakes... Doubt we see many in season except certain scenarios. Need to improve field goals. Glad we hit that 49 yarder, but that was with the wind at their backs. Looking forward to Tristan arriving into campus and getting started hopefully displacing Bleekrode. He's a great backup kicker though.

It'll be Sims vs CT. Not sure who is better, but today was impressive from Sims as limited as it was. CT is still our guy in my mind until proven otherwise in fall call though. I trust Rhule makes the right decision, and I'm hopeful whoever isn't starter remains to be backup. Who WILL play at some point in the season no doubt.

Haarberg isn’t going to be a B1G QB that we’re going to win with..

On offense, Kemp looks legit. He seems to be a good route runner and gets open (sometimes wide open) using his quickness and juke moves. He reminds me of Kenny Bell...always able to get open on 10-15 yard routes.
Agree on Kemp. He actually reminds me more of Westercamp....good routes, dependable hands. Not a burner like Trey, but that's a silly high bar.

Didn’t see any passing skills today, all the passes to Betts were downs by his feet that were difficult catches..
Threw the game’s lone 1st half deep ball & betts stopped running

Threw an absolute bullet on an RPO that was dropped

It’s okay if you don’t see it. You have plenty of company

Haarberg - zero turnovers but 0-6 passing. One really egregiously bad drop on a dart, one batted down at the line. Led a touchdown drive.

Looked like he belonged physically

Purdy looked the same as he ever has. No juice whatsoever, 2 turnovers, zero points
Honestly, I didn't watch much today because of a prior engagement.
It looks like HH is more of a slinger than a thrower. Slings the ball but doesn't get rid of the ball quickly. A real hoss running it though.

Its strictly a 2 horse race at QB. If CT comes back, no way, other than an injury HH, Purdy, Logan, Torres see any meaningful time at QB.

Only watched half of a quarter, but other than being sloppy with the ball, I really liked what I saw. Whole lotta guys are carrying a whole lot less fat than we've seen for almost a decade.

Being unfair here, but, Gilbert should block more and be thrown to less. I seen way too many drops by way too many guys.

Enough criticism here, like I say, I only watched a small portion. If the ball carriers weren't focused on holding onto the ball and the receivers catching every routine ball, I assume they will be reminded daily. When you're 4-8, those things have to be as flawless as possible. We didn't make the young receiver coach or tight end coach look very good today.

Looks like the freshmen and the kids they brought in are going to really be good additions, especially on defense.

HH absolutely held the ball too long today

But he did so while looking downfield

I'm kind of an arm slot kind of guy, and HH needs to find one.
