1. Lame for Sam to do that in his position.

2. That effort is something else though.

Think about all the questionable 'effort' that could be discussed. Multiple plays, in lots of games, for the last few years.

Sam decides to target a true freshman filling in due to injury? Douchebag.

I went back and watched the video-- it was poor effort. Being pointed out on twitter (don't believe he mentioned his name- which means you saw the same thing he did) is better than in the newspaper.
I respectfully disagree with you on the douchebag thing.... NEBRASKA is a big time program (in name only) and a fish bowl. All eyes are on you when you put the uniform on.

Im not a big fan of sam, and twitter is a dumb way to put it out there...
However, i donjt like the freshman argument. Maybe if it was busted coverage or getting burned by a senior reciever, but that was just a simple football play. Theres an opponent with the ball a yard from you and hes about to score. Go like hell to stop his ass. You dont need years of college xperience to at least try to do that, do you? Gawd i hope not but that play says otherwise.
I will agree that proper team leadership can help bring out more effort, and our team is lacking that.

I saw the video and it was strange to pick out LJ on that play to attack. Especially using a bunch of still shots. Pretty bush league IMO

Based on what's been said, he must be singling out Lamar Jackson.

No Banderas?
No Rose-Ivey?
No Utter?

One could make a comedy clip of the three above and their lack of effort. Or tackling. Or angles. Or falling over when 5 mph wind hits field level. Or, a lot of stuff.

Never pointed out Tommy yelling at teammates?

Never pointed out Williams lack of effort?

Never pointed out McMullen 30 pounds overweight?

Never pointed out Gerry letting 140 of his teammates down by failing school?

Sam is a punk bitch, period.

Yes he could have pointed out a lot.
Why do you suppose he didnt?
I dont read his articles anymore because i absolutely cannot stand his writing style.

Some schools simply won't tolerate this level of "effort". At other places, they complain about someone calling out the garbage effort.
It was in fact poor effort, regardless of everything else. He obviously wasnt the only one but that doesnt take this away.

Not sure why Sam felt compelled to single any one player out when he could have found five others on defense guilty of the same damned thing.

The problem we have is lack of effort, lack of desire and a lack of caring by far too many on this team as evidenced by the last 2 games. Riley needs to get rid of guys that don't want to play here. This apathy by certain players will ruin the team if the staff doesn't face it head on.

Sam McKewon is a joke, but then again every sportswriter in Nebraska is a joke. I don't know if I would ever condone a writer calling out a college football player, but if he was going to do it why not call out a Soph. LB that seems to have no football instincts has slow feet and seems like he is taking off his fair share of plays. Don't call out a Fr. DB who's play time has been limited, when you have a Soph. who has been a starter since he stepped on campus his freshmen year and is loved by this coaching staff for whatever reason that I can't figure out. This LB was jogging after the QB ran by him yesterday and even my wife, who knows little about football, pointed it out.

Both of you should watch the video of the play then get back to this thread and own up to your [wrong] statements.

Hot damn this fan base is garbage for thinking Sam had the goods on something. He got slaughtered on Twitter.

Fans can call out the lack of effort and the manner in which a sports writer goes about being a tool in selectively pointing out such lack of effort.

I love how everyone points out Armstrong yelling at players as a negative. Are you guys so forgetful that you don't remember Frazier getting on his teammates?? Frazier was not the most liked member of his team and he didn't care. Difference was he didn't have social media making a big deal out of it. There was just the water cooler where people met and talked about it. Yeah, I forgot there was only one water cooler in Nebraska at the time

Frazier was a winner and made winning plays. Armstrong made boneheaded plays and threw games away. Frazier 4 Conference championships, 2 National Titles. Armstrong 0 B1G Title games, 0 National Championships. Big difference, Frazier earned the right to expect excellence from his team, Armstrong needed to display excellence before he could ask it of his teammates.

So what about quitting on a play should be a secret because you're a freshman? Which year in school does it become ok to quit on a play?

Expected the offense to struggle, didn't expect the D to look like they hadn't made a live tackle in six months. Maybe he was afraid to get hurdled again.

You don't get to recreate history, Tommy was respected by his teammates. Your comments are more proof just how terrible this fan base is.

The defense played like crap. The offense played like crap. And there were many players on both units whose effort was minimal. Same goes for the Iowa game. So calling out one young player is crap. In my opinion, and based admittedly on purely superficial observations, the coaches lost this team at the end of the year. I have no idea why, if it is true.

Despite statements to the contrary, I also don't think the team had a lot of confidence in Fyfe. The attitude of the team really seemed to tank and go into the shitter after TA injured his hamstring. There seemed to be a real defeatist attitude which caused the team to lose its fight against Iowa and Tennessee at the first sign of adversity. Compare that to the fight this team displayed earlier in the year often coming from behind.

Not sure what you were expecting with everything the offense was missing

Tklim, I was expecting our mostly healthy offensive line to be able to run block against one of THE worst rushing defenses in America. THAT would take pressure off Fyfe and eliminate most third and forever's that also led to so many sacks. Running game success also equals play action passing success which slows down the rush.
Our offensive line's play against a weak, weak Tennessee rush defense was beyond incomprehensible

So he didn't quit on the play and the entire thread is irrelevant?

While I agree with that assesment, there were still two walk ons going against top defensive line talent... doesn't change anything now... GBR

Actually, no. Other than Barnett Tennessee did not have top defensive line talent against us, due to injuries

Let's look at what they add versus what we had.. were they better players? Sure seems like it... if you're doing what you're supposed to do... and the other person still beats you, what is that? Coaching?! Or the other person being better?

Basically yes. He was covering a receiver going the other direction, when the ball was caught he changed direction, which is when the stills began. The WR was going much faster than him. The stiles make it look like Gerry 2015 vs Purdue effort, but the video didn't look bad at all.

Look my point is simple: you can talk all you want about Tennessee having superior defensive line talent on paper, but the reality is they were wretched and awful and horrible against the run this year, especially at the end of the season. Did they suddenly turn into Alabama's rushing defense in three weeks? If you take out Ozigbo's 42 yard run our offensive line generated around 20 yards of rushing offense. And that is inexcusable.
And our offensive line coaches are the same ones who coached our line to run effectively against UCLA and others.
That leads me to conclude that our line severely underachieved against Tennessee. And it could have a lot to do with attitude.

I'm not surprised you can't figure it out.

No he didn't quit, actual video of the play supports that fact. This thread is very relevant, it exposes Sam McKewon.
Golly, you sure are cutting-edge.

Let me see if I have it right: per your above posts, our fanbase is pathetic, and Sam McKewon is conspiring against Riley and staff?

Actually, if you read McKeeon's stupid article in the OWH today you will see a thinly veiled attack on Riley's offensive style. He openly questions it and criticizes it, stating how B1G coaches have figured it out. He openly questions how it can be effective in the future.
The whole article comes across as a kind of swipe at Riley and staff
