Portal QB's

I didn't take it like that either. From all accounts, he appears to like his job to me.
how can he not?

I can't think of a place where you can collect $9.25M/year with less pressure.

the highlight of the post season presser after we blew a 94% chance at a bowl was a media member's phone unexpectedly blurting out a Christmas carol ringtone.

I agree

there is this, however:

Having experienced some of this in the baseball world, is he still that guy if he's honest and just says, "You'll never play." Not sure that letting someone stay on the team in that situation is what's "good" for them. Having all the parents love you might not be the best way to win games.

the good thing is that Rhule's shown via actions that what he says in pressers is largely meaningless.

hopefully that applies here, too.

He literally said that he would tell a kid they aren't going to start and let them decide if they want to stay

He could have made that and sat on his couch. He literally could have done that. So we can rule out the money aspect of why he's here.

how does he know who will start next year already?

guessing there were many players who garnered starts this year who'd have been told they had no shot after last Thanksgiving.

including one he called out as having a shot to make an NFL roster - Phalen Sanford

this is pretty customary. bob knight told kids he wouldn't take their scholarship, but it was unlikely they'd play and he would help find them a new school. jerome tang told ish massoud that he would be a roll player this season. ish transferred to georgetown. it is the right way to treat youngsters.

...and this is why pressers, and who attends them, or doesn't, means zilcho to me. Don't get me wrong, I watched it, thought it was interesting, but overall? Meh. Didn't change a thing and we've heard him say stuff before he didn't follow thru with, so whatevs on them overall.

Rhule's view of the portal is very much unlike those who view it like going to the mall with a high limit credit card. He signed a large class and is in the process of signing another large class. In a few weeks, these two classes will occupy 50 of the 85 available scholarships. It's kind of hard to run kids off after a year in the program past player initiated attrition (although I'm sure Rhule will let a few know they have a low chance of ever playing). So he has a math problem. He also noted that a number of the portal QBs that are popping this year are in their second year of their programs.

I could see him telling Sims that he won't be the starting quarterback when the season starts.

I agree

I can't, however, see sims caring enough to transfer somewhere else in hopes he plays again

he completely checked out after the CU game

maybe he quits football altogether and we recoup his roster spot

I could see another school taking a shot at him. He's talented, just the opposite of clutch.

If we don't have 1.5 million to spend on a portal QB. I'm curious what rule is supposed to do about it? Of course, you would like to land the top portal transfer QB.... But if you can't do that, then you have no choice but to work with what you have

So we're paying Satterfield $1.5 million/year despite a long career of mediocrity.....but won't pay that much for a proven QB? But we'll also spend half a billion dollars to renovate the stadium?

This program deserves to lose.

...and I always ask posters how much they've contributed to the NIL for said QB??

I've given zero. You?

Do you mean private donors? Because while that is true...they donated for the stadium right? Different bucket.
yes.

same bucket (private donors), different allocation (stadium instead of NIL).

our AD can and should influence this, and I believe he has. just not in the direction most would agree has a larger impact on the on-field product (NIL).

If a donor makes a donation and says he wants to go to the stadium, then it needs to go to the stadium. I don't see how you're going to turn that money down if you're Trev. IE-different bucket.

I can't really see the donors that are willing to donate for the stadium being unwilling pony up of a QB.
Exactly. Trev needs to tell them to pay up for NIL.

As Ive stated in other threads, we need to be funneling big ten money toward nil. Bend the rules, find a way, otherwise theres no reason to be in this terrible conference if the money wont actually benefit our chances of winning nattys.

the AD has relationships with donors and campaigns accordingly

trev has been talking for years about the stadium. he's not talked for 5 seconds about NIL.

I think they can be selective in the portal. Pay good money for a few high quality proven guys in the portal, build the roster with recruiting. I'd like to see them get a difference maker at QB, RB, and WR.

Yep.

And this is Nebraska. We can do the stadium AND find 3 mil for the best qb and OL on the market this year.
If they say no then whatever but if we arent flashing more money in their faces than other schools our athletic department isnt doing their job,

Curious how the rest of the locker room would react if we coughed up 1.5 million dollars for one player and he rolled in there and was obviously promised the starting job to go along with. I just question how well that's gonna go over. One of the many reasons I hate the portal.

I know other programs are going to do it....and I know they'll have to deal with the same issues. But a lot of those programs are going to have several high-end players already cashing checks, so it's going to be easier to weave a high dollar guy in with other high dollar guys.

considering there are 92 players listed on this website as being paid at least something right now, I imagine they'd be pumped to see that kind of cash being spent and that they have an opportunity to earn it themselves.

I will look at that later, and I'm curious if it lists the amounts. But something tells me what most of those guys are making is a pittance compared to what we're talking about for a sought after QB

it doesn't list the amounts, and absolutely it varies.

but every single player on scholarship is getting paid something. plus 7 who aren't.
