OT Retirement

Different people have different opinions of "woke". Seems like a lot of people are just looking for ways to attack teachers.
I don't think it happens all that much but what I do think happens is that the super crazy teachers on either side, will be super vocal about it on social media so then it becomes 'a thing"

I just want to teach my classes, coach my sports and go home.

I don't go to your office and tell you how to do your job.
of course not. you’re incapable of this.

as a teacher, you’ve long accepted your decision to not participate in the competitive aspect of our economy.

like it or not, your salary is paid by the tax dollars of the parents who want a say in how you do your job. they’re your boss’s boss’s boss.

There is no either side, only one side. Public school teachers and teachers unions are overwhelmingly left leaning. There are obviously exceptions. You sound like one of the good ones.

No, parent's can be major league jackwads and taxpayers too. Ever been to a sports event? Those parents are insufferable at times and their kids also go to school.

No they aren't. I don't work at a public school.

Stings a bit, when you think have have a cool post all lined up and it falls apart? Trust me, I know, I do it all the time.

I compete in the most competitive part of our economy, recruiting kids and their parents money to make my salary go up and up and up.

My issue lies when you have parents who don't even vote for school board members and have never been a part of the process and all the sudden are nitpicking what goes on at school. All because they got riled up on social media about something halfway across the country. Now, after the kid has been in school for 7 years, the parents all the sudden care. Give me a break.

That's just drama in my book. I don't want to teach. Hell, I really don't want to even help with math at night.

Right?

Basically once the kid hits 3rd grade...you can no longer help them.

You’re in the sex slave industry?

Perfect example. Everyone complains about the coach and can do better. From 2nd grade up. But amazingly no one steps up to do it themselves. Coaching for 3 hours a week is humbling. I can't imagine trying to teach all day.

An even more straight line in private schools from parents’ wallets to yours

Their tuition dollars and donations make your living possible

And lol at your last paragraph. You became a teacher so you didn’t have to compete, just like every teacher.

You are a conscientious objector as it pertains to economic participation.

1. If my kid is being taught some woke bullshit you better believe I’m raising some hell
I don't teach anymore, but I would have loved if parents were more involved. Where I taught, they didn't give a crap one way or another.

But, if you do have a concern, I would recommend reaching out calmly and with an open mind to the teacher before getting too worked up. I think you would get a satisfactory response most of the time.

Case in point, I used to do a really awesome simulation in class to show the differences between capitalism and socialism. The big takeaway at the end was that socialism sucks and leads to worse overall outcomes for society. I had to split the class in half to simulate each "role". I can only imagine some parent today demanding I be fired because I "indoctrinated their kid to be a socialist" or something.

It is 100% competition. Don't be mad about it, it is okay.

Yes. In the big school where I taught, we had one crazy on each side. There were probably more, but they kept it to themselves as they should. The lib lady was insane...I think she was just miserable in general. The conservative dude was a really awesome guy and teacher, but went way over the line one time with students (politically).

I get reducing the tax burden in retirement but I ran some scenarios and found I didn't save any on taxes and probably would end up paying more using the Roth 401k in the middle of my career. I already had a Roth too, so I already had non-taxable income covered.

I do agree a Roth is key to diversifying the retirement income stream. I try to get the young guys at work to start one but they tell me 3% for a 401k is all they can afford.
You won’t save taxes overall with a Roth IF you project a tax rate equal to or lower than your current tax rate. It’s only tax advantageous IF your tax rate in retirement is higher than your current rate. Everything else being equal.

And all their employees fall gently into their subsidized safety net
Some might. Many charters and privates do not require staff to have the credentials required for public schools. And...there is intense competition for students even between rural public schools. If you lose, shit gets ugly.

Agree. And I still think it's great from a diversity standpoint. Luckily I started mine really early, so I got the full tax benefit.

I've got about 10 years left. 59 and a half, I'm selling my house cashing out my 401k. Selling my gold and silver and headed to the beaches of Thailand. You can live like a king over there for way cheaper than the good old US of Inflation. A brand-new house over there for 80k. with a pool. Good luck finding a house in this country for 80k that isn't in a crack neighborhood or on fire.
First of all HBK, you're a really good dude, so I think I can offer you a suggestion, and I even thought about posting this since yesterday cause far be it from me to ever tell anyone what they should do. I only offer this as a "suggestion."

If you can swing a nice place in Thailand, you would be positioned so much better in the near term if you could do so without unloading your precious metals. Of course, its none of my business, but events tell me you could be the KING and not just live like a king when one thing happens.

We are getting dangerously close to the short squeeze for the ages in precious metals. The time will come when someone will not be able to deliver a large order and then the price of metals will skyrocket. Your wealth may increase 20/50/100 times within a month. Now you're talking about living in a palace environment.

It's a mathematical certainty that this will happen. The 10 Year Bond is now at 4.62% and rising. If and when it goes past 5.00% to somewhere at 5.20% the whole system is subject to breaking.

In the silver market, India with its silver purchases and huge solar panel production is now using over 50% of global silver production. Gold will run and silver will sprint.

The price in the gold market i(60.00-80.00 an ounce and 2-3.00 in spot versus 6.50-7.00 an ounce) in the US and the East is enough that large buyers of gold purchase gold from the US, ship it to the East and can arbitrage and sell it for a higher price and make money hand over fist. That activity continues to increase, at a point, the US in the open market looks likely to be so short, the price has nowhere to go but straight up.

I apologize for even offering this suggestion, but in my world among my assets of cash, Bitcoin and cryptos, the last thing I'm ever going to sell is my precious metals. How much you have in market value in metals, I may just buy it from you for cash.

At any rate, I hope everything in Thailand meets your expectations. Take care.

What happens if you fail in your recruitment efforts?

Nothing?
The school shuts down. We have to have enrollment and we have to compete against all the other private schools and public schools to get as many students as we can.

Low numbers = reduction in force
low enough numbers - school closing

Just like any job...it is sales, in the end. If we don't sell our product we go out of business.

Self-Employment Tax per IRS website

When figuring your adjusted gross income on Form 1040, Form 1040-SR, or Form 1040-NR, you can deduct one-half of the self-employment tax. You calculate this deduction on Schedule SE (attach Schedule 1 (Form 1040), Additional Income and Adjustments to Income
Great. A schedule A deduction that’s limited by your income. So in reality it’s a fraction of the 7.65% that the “Deduction” saves you. It’s ridiculous. It should be a tax credit and not a deduction. I don’t manually calculate my self employment tax. My software does that and I guarantee you that the 7.65% deduction doesn’t end up near equaling 7.65% when the calculation is done. It’s similar I believe to deducting property tax. Yeah you can deduct it but then the total allowable is limited and your household AGI affects schedule A.

Sounds about right.

I have a super liberal in my department but he is great at just teaching and not pushing his ideas.

Just like me, I love drinking and womanizing but I don't push that agenda!

Great question. In Nebraska, and I assume it is this way in other rural areas, the number of school districts has fallen tremendously over the past 100 years. There's half as many districts as there were even 30 years ago. They have consolidated, in most cases.

State aid dollars are allocated partly by enrollment. More kids equals more dollars, more programs, nicer facilities, better pay for teachers, etc. Without that, property taxes have to go up to fund the difference. First ugly.

When the school starts to shrink and look less attractive than the ones down the road, families move or opt in to the more attractive schools. Decline accelerates. Economic development shifts toward the towns with the more popular schools.

Eventually the loser closes, or often they consolidate with the school down the road, but of course even with consolidation, one town wins - the one with the actual school building. So that is where people start businesses, build homes, hospitals, and daycares, and the town that loses shrivels up and dies.

It is economic warfare, and schools are a weapon in the arsenal.

I worked with an old lady, she was amazing. She retired like in he mid 70's...

Over the summer they were cleaning out her cabinets and found a bottle of whisky in the back.
Probably kept it there for her beaus.
