the difference is containment. The benefit of spending money on Iraq was not great compared to what it got us. Sadaam was contained, and it’s expensive in US lives and money because we were paying US troops to do the job.

The benefit in Ukraine is greater for what that gets us. Putin is not contained, (see Georgia, etc.) so wearing down his army and resources is helpful. And we’re paying/helping Ukraine pay for its troops, which is cheaper. We are also splitting the tab with Europe. And American lives are not at stake.

I am always a bit perplexed by this reasoning.. Iraq had nothing to do with 9/11 and didn’t have WMD but we invaded anyway…. Spent over a trillion dollars there and lots of American blood for a manufactured reason but that is ok. Not sure how that counts as defending the country but whatever. We have sent less money ($120b vs $140b) to Ukraine than Europe and $58 billion of the support was actually spent here in the US…. Just don’t understand spending over a trillion on a non-threat country but spending $120b, renewing our weapons stockpile, pumping $58b into the US economy to slow a direct threat to Europe and ourselves is wasteful.. Also, China is watching closely and a failure to back Ukraine is the green light to go for Taiwan, which we just did.. just makes me wonder what these chuckleheads are thinking….

3 years of war in Ukraine is doing nothing but helping Russia. As a historical comparison, they just learned the lessons of the Winter War, 1941 and 1942, for a relatively low cost, and they are a much stronger military now than they were in 2022. Russia is now the only country besides Ukraine experienced fighting a conventional war against a near-peer adversary. In 1943 and 1944, the Soviets became a steamroller army. I think it's a very bad idea to give Russia that chance again by letting the war continue.

Not much of a history buff are you? Look at all the stuff from Vietnam, and that was us invading a random country. Not us being invaded by a much larger country. You can point out all the wrongs Ukraine is doing, but look at the mistakes we made, while not under invasion. Now imagine us in a war during the social media age.
