Keyshawn gone

Guess it wont be just a one game suspension... does this open up a scholarship?
I imagine they might give one to a walk-on for next year. However, are the scholarships four/five one year scholarships? If so, if you enroll in January, is your year 1 scholarship January to December?

I seem to recall the coaches last year saying they couldn't give Grime's scholly to anyone because the fall semester had already begun. I guess in theory they could give it to a Sr. walkon but we may be only talking about a semester here.

This sucked at first reading the header part of it, love the kid already and if he's even half of what his dad is or was, KJJ will be the best WR in the Big 10, if not the country. But if he can come back and does come back, then awesome. It's better to get control now then let KJJ take advantage of his name and get all droped up and out of control. I'll pray for Jr and Sr and hope he gets this ship rightened and comes back home to his Husker family!!! ;)

I'll admit, when I first heard about Sr. taking a bunch of the Calabasas kids around the country to visit various schools, I thought to myself "not here, just sounds like too much drama". But over the past two years I don't think I could be more impressed with Sr from the way he handled his son's recruitment to what is hopefully just a bump in the road now. Over the past two years I have become a Sr. fan. Now let's get them both back here and in the fold after Jan.

I shared your fears and am impressed as well with how well that was handled. A professional PR person couldn't have written that any better. Could the man have any more respect for the head coach?

Just read he is heading to a juco for the fall with hoping to return to the team in January.

I'm really impressed with how his father handled this. This is how you straighten out a kid who is starting to make bad decisions. I wish more athletes, and students on general, had fathers like Keyshawn.

"It's not one big party — especially when you're playing football," Keyshawn Johnson Sr. said.

The father described the decision as a joint decision between he, coach Mike Riley and Nebraska's athletic department.

"We're all on board with the decision that has been made," Keyshawn Johnson Sr. said. "I look forward to him coming back in January, and hopefully he comes back as a mature young adult. Mike Riley and coach Keith Williams and the staff let him know this is not a big party. I'm full support with Mike Riley and his decisions. I support him 100 percent. One thing you will not do as my son is you will not embarrass Nebraska, you will not embarrass Mike Riley and you will not embarrass this family. If you mature and you're ready to presume your football career and academic goals, then Nebraska will be ready to embrace you ... If he does everything he's supposed to do, he can join the football program again and become successful."

Respect.

I have much respect for Sr. He sounds like a great dad. Tough love is tough but its always for the kid, and Sr. is showing that. Its just a bump on Jr. and if he gets his head back on straight (which he will) this bump will be forgotten.

As a parent tough love is tough on us too but it is for the best in the long run. Cant say enough great things about KJ Sr. and we will be saying great things about Jr. too once he matures, which he will. Prayers for all

Yeah. This was a bummer until I read more about it. Then, I realized the following:

1.) Junior wasn't ready to start, everyone knew that and he was headed for a redshirt season anyway. It doesn't affect the team this year, and his scholarship is still locked up because its a "leave of absence," so don't go salivating too much.

2.) Senior is a badass and has completely earned my respect as both a promoter of our program and as a dad. I can't imagine a better response to seeing your talented-ass son start to screw around too much.

3.) Given his background, and the fact that he's now being removed from his buddies in the Nebraska program, Keyshawn Junior has two responses: Be a rebellious douche, or buckle down and get back with the program ASAP. I'm guessing he does the latter, and certainly hope he does.

Would feel better if he was still on campus but he was likely headed towards a RS year. Hopefully he spends some time in the weight room during his time away from the program.

It's great the the best fans in the world are so realistic and refrain from hyperbole.

agree, however, as with any unfavorable event, it is important that the program look at itself to see if anything could have been done or can be done in the future to minimize similar occurrences. Is there a proper culture in place - teammates policing teammates, coaches, support staff to help new arrivals integrate into the program?

not saying there is anything wrong with the current environment but it does need to be explored as I am sure it is

Actually, if weed is the greatest of our concerns, I'm fine with that given how nutball some programs already are and can get if they spin out of control. It should be legal, anyway, and is legal in our neighbor to the west.

if weed was a contributing factor to him not being campus then it is a problem

This has little to do with the culture. This is one kid who came in a bit immature and didn't take care of what he was supposed to. At that point, the coach and the parents intervened and took steps to hopefully correct the situation.

A staff is not going to babysit these kids 24/7. If a player is inclined to do something stupid, illegal, or simply not take care of business, no amount of oversight is going to change that from happening. Sometimes a person has to fail in order to succeed or take a step back in order to go forward.

I mean, yeah, I know. Fair.
Think of the weed issue as a symptom, not the disease.

By itself, it doesn't make or break a person. But it can be a signal that the person hasn't yet lined up their priorities correctly. I don't imagine that the staff or Sr. had a conversation that went, "OMG, he got caught smoking one time, get him outta here!!!"

I imagine it involved a realistic look at how his progress was going on the field, in the weight room, academically, in terms of playbook, and in terms of his social and mental well-being. You don't let a kid like that head back home if everything else is going well and it's just that he got caught partying.

Some people just aren't ready for college. I certainly wasn't, and I didn't have to start in January or have the pressure and expectation of being a major D-1 football player with a famous parent.

Not sure how likely he was to play this year since coming off his medical issue this past winter... so on the field for 2017 this does not hurt much.

I am curious how it will affect any recruiting since it was said during the last recruiting cycle that some other players were drawn to him and he helped get more players to think about coming to NU.

Really hope it has no affect on any recruiting whatsoever. Curious about KJ Sr flying players in to Lincoln though and how this affects that...

2017 Scholarship WR's (17 total left on the roster)
SR: DPE
JR: Morgan, Williams, Darlington
SO: ---------
RSFR: Spielman
FR: Lindsey, McQuitty

Looks like Gabe Rahn, Bryan Reimers, and Conor Young will get a lot of playing time!

This is why I always laugh when people the last two recruiting cycles have wanted us to stop recruiting so many WRs..

Plenty of Dean's list kids who are not at all adverse to enjoying a little Green. They realize there are 24 hours in the day and prioritize properly. As for KJ Jr, those are some pretty big shoes to fill within the family. And it must be humiliating to have to come back home. This will test his strength as a person.

KJ Senior is serious about the sport of football. There are other good quotes, this might be the best one.
“One thing you will not do as my son is you will not embarrass Nebraska, you will not embarrass Mike Riley and you will not embarrass this family,” the elder Johnson said. “If you mature and you’re ready to resume your football career and academic goals, then Nebraska will be ready to embrace you.”

i didn't mean to imply that a review of one's culture or program necessarily means there are deficiencies. I would think anytime a high profile recruit only lasts a short time on campus the program reviews its processes .

The same goes on everyday in numerous other companies. If a hospital or airline experiences a safety event there is a comprehensive review to see if there are any system issues that might have contributed. Almost always there is some room for improvement, lessons learned etc even if wasn't the primary cause of the event. If a company consistently concludes there is nothing more that could have been done then that company has a big culture problem.

I suppose.

However, safety events have to be investigated because there are regulations in place that require it and because there is a pack of lawyers standing in wait to get to the injured party. Most of the time in those safety events, the process is fine but the operator took a short cut or failed to follow the SOP. (Same as here)

In this case, the cause of the issue was easily determined. A kid enrolled early, had complications from appendicitis, lost 25 lbs, didn't practice for a good while, fell behind and didn't appear to be in line to play. Add to that he appears to be a little immature in prioritizing and likes to "socialize" more than the normal athlete.

He isn't the only 17-18 year old kid that has many of those same issues. Had I gone to college directly out of high school, I would have been in a similar situation.

I believe the individual needs to do a self evaluation not the school or the football program. 99.9% of the athletes who face disciplinary measures are in that situation because of individual choices they make.

The fact that it was caught so early indicates to me that there was sufficient systems in place.

Agree that this is impressive of kjj sr. Also believe this strong dad is going to do everything he can to see that Jr fulfills his commitment to Nebraska and mike Riley.

I'll say it again. Even when I was a cocky youngster (and I'm not all that old at 35) I didn't like Key Sr. the diva.

He has to win the award though, for the guy who has made my opinion switch the furthest in my lifetime though.

I'd say it has a lot to do with culture. If 3 of your players are caught with it in the off-season imagine how many more aren't getting caught.

Words of wisdom and maturity from the guy who has "f*ck you" as his sig. Laughing:p:D

Proportionally? Probably the same number of players getting busted for underage drinking or skipping class or whatever other rule you want to put up there. As I said before, the kids who are predisposed to push the envelope will push the envelope. Coaches who supposedly run tight ships have players that get caught doing stupid things. Is every coach's culture faulty?

Well then it's all of them (it's not, but if you throw in underage drinking the numbers rise even more dramatically.) I don't even think it's the coach's culture. Just 15-25 year olds in general.

Lets keep in mind here that there's two huge components that the whole rest of the team doesn't have here.

Key Sr is best buds with the HC and has been for decades. He is also not "Joe Smith" in the eyes of the public.

Who knows what directives he gave Williams or Riley to say "if my son is not living up to XYZ standard, you need to be on the phone with me".

Especially since he has publically announced that shaming his family name was a major component of this.

If Sichterman is busted for pot, Riley doesn't call his old man to talk it over with him. Nor is old man Sichterman looking to pull Jr out of school to protect his brand.

Let me be clear, KJJ made this mess, but let's recognize he's on a shorter leash than pretty much anyone on the roster.
