Ok it was not twenty years ago today. It was 20 years ago yesterday, I just missed it. Which is ironic because I was a day late hearing about this game 20 years ago too.I was in basic training at this time and didn't hear about the flea kicker until the next morning after church.

Anyways, something I never noticed about the play until now was how badly Wiggins was interfered with. The Mizzou D-Back was basically hugging Wiggins before the ball reaches him. Anyone else ever notice that? IMO Mizzou fans that claim we won on an illegal play, think again. If Mizzou D-back doesn't bear hug Wiggins illegally, he catches the ball and the same outcome happens.

The funny thing about this game is Mizzou was like fringe top 25 back then and I thought they were garbage. I thought anyone outside of the top 10 was not worth talking about. Wow, have my views changed. Now I see what its like to be a fan of a school that's not elite.

That night ended in a dumpster for me.

I had a "lucky shirt" that I bought at the beginning of the 1993 season, and the Huskers had not lost a game in five years when I was wearing it. As Missou seeming sealed their when Nebraska punted with only three minutes on the clock, I stormed out of my apartment, throwing the now-tainted magic shirt in the dumpster.

But as I drove around, trying to get over my distress, I decided to turn the game on in the car to catch the post-game commentary. Nebraska had the ball, and was driving down the field. I swung into the nearest bar and ran inside. Just in time to see "Frost to the middle...diving....touchdown Nebraska!" And the rest is history. And to the comment above, a flag for interference really should have been thrown. The DB was all over Wiggins before the ball got there.

So I had to get the magic shirt out of the trash and apologize profusely. I semi-retired it after the 1997 season, but it continued its unbeaten streak at least another four years. I think the 2002 Rose Bowl ended it.

It's really not a fun game to watch as a Husker fan, because Missouri pretty much dominated the whole game.

We should look into Davison as OC!

Ironically, there was another kicked ball in that game earlier in the 4th quarter. The game was tied at 31 with about 6:30 to go. Frost threw a pass that I think deflected off an NU receiver and was then kicked in the air by a Missouri LB before being intercepted. Mizzou took over on the NU 30 and took a 38-31 lead a few plays later.

Some reflections on that game . . .

I was there with my wife and high school age son. We had seats at the opposite end zone and knew something odd had happened on the NU TD. We did not know it was kicked until the drive home and listening to the radio. The MU fans were really steamed as we walked to the car after the game. We tailgated with some MU friends before the game but they were out of there fast after the game.

Corby Jones did play well that game. The game was back and forth and a real battle. I believe Mike Rucker made the final tackle, a sack of Jones.

I knew the head referee at the game and he said the league office gave the officiating crew a thumbs up on the TD call. Clearly pass interference in my book. Matt Davison made a career out of that catch (Osborne quote). Someone posted a picture of TO in the locker room after the game and he had the biggest smile I ever saw on him.

What a game!

Were Grant Winstrom and Jason Peters still on the team?

Football is all about match ups. And what that game showed was that even McBride's great defenses of the 90's had their Achilles heal. And that Achilles heal was good, dual threat quarterbacks. McBride's defense's had been retooled to beat the drop back, pro style QB's at the Florida schools so we could win a national title. It was all predicated on putting pressure on a QB in the pocket.

There are a few examples other than Corby Jones that make this clear. That Missouri game was not a fluke. Dante Culpepper also gave us fits with his legs and his arm. And when we played Washington we were in total lock down defensive mode so long as Brock Huard was in the game. But when Tuiassosopo (sp?) came in he had both a canon for an arm, but also could run. Washington did better after that.

Lemme guess. Your lucky shirts name was Osborne?

Just happen to be there but didn't realize how the catch was made because I was sitting at the other end of the end Zone until I seen afterwards at the motel...

Thought for sure we were going to lose that game... One hellva drive with a minute or less.

I remember screaming at the rest of my family, “Never give up on the huskers”. Well I was right. Wish I had that faith now.

It was, after all, touted as "JUDGMENT DAY" on ABC. Musbooger was all about Nebraska at the beginning of the game, but by the end, he pretty much lobbied Michigan as the NC! Laughing

The Nebraska - Missouri game, in reality, was maybe the best game of the year, or a damn close second. The entertainment value was 5 star!

I remember. I assumed that he didn't catch it, threw my hat at the TV....
All the while, my wife was trying to tell me that he did catch it.
I'm like...wayment...what? seriously? We won!!!!!

Here is my story. We were living in Kansas City and still do. Our son was 8 months old at the time and he was running a fever. My wife (a Mizzou grad) finally got him to sleep in his room right as Mizzou took a 38-31 lead. She came back downstairs part gloating and part worried about our sick baby and said "No matter what happens, do not scream at the TV." I responded in a pissed off way by saying "You guys have already won, there won't be any screaming."

We watched the rest of the game in silence and I was silently freaking out during that last NU drive as she sat on the couch staring back and forth between the TV and me, wearing her pathetic Mizzou sweatshirt. Despite her plea to not have me scream, when the flea-kicker happened I jumped up out of my chair and started running around screaming my brains out. I just couldn't help it after that turn of events.

Of course, our sick boy woke up immediately because of my antics and started crying. She was so mad that she literally threw me and my bag of Tostitos down to the basement where I had to watch overtime.

Once the game ended, I came upstairs happy as a clam and she didn't talk to me for over two days. I walked around the house with a cheshire cat grin the rest of that day and into the next.

Fast forward 20 years and our boy is now a Junior at UNL and my wife is as big a Husker fan as she is a Mizzou fan.

When I think about all of this, it still makes me grin. #GBR

we should have never needed the flea kicker. davison was raped 2 plays before at the goal line. should have been first and goal at the 2 and frost would have scored on a keeper because he's scott frost.

My brother was at the game and said the Mizzou fans were gloating and in his face the whole game. After the play with Davison's miracle catch he said the Mizzou fans rushed the end zone thinking it was over, had beat NU and were trying to jump up on the goalposts to tear them down. He said he didn't know what was going on until he saw the Husker sideline jumping up and down. After NU ultimately won the game he said grown Mizzou men were literally crying. I'll never forget the look on Coach Larry Smith's face when Davison caught the ball. Absolute disbelief. Ozzy was due for a game like this to go his way. Awesome.

You do know it was dubbed "judgment day" because of the PSU/Michigan game? You had two 8-0 top 5 teams clashing. Michigan blew the fricken doors off PSU in Happy Valley. The NU game was supposed to be an after thought but you ended needing a miracle to win. So not sure what the smily face and hate for Muss is about...he alone didn't drop you from the #1 spot after that weekend.

I was living in Seattle at the time and had just arrived back in Mecca. I was loaded down with pheasant hunting supplies and two bird dogs. I was really tired and just a little irritated that I missed out on going to the game. I got in town just a little too late and my friends went without me. Feeling sorry for myself I was trying to catch a nap and watch the game at the same time in my motel room. I finally thought to myself what am I doing here in a motel room all alone when I am back in the old hometown. I went down to the local tavern. I was stunned at how hard the K-State crowd was cheering for the Tigers. I went to school with these guys. We always had a fun rivalry when the Huskers played the Cats but I had never seen them so openly and so vociferously root against the Huskers when they were playing another team. We Husker fans were nervous. Davison's catch caused the whole joint to erupt and it even turned the tide with the K-State crowd. I was so happy I got out of bed and went down to the Tav. It is just one of many great memories I have of Nebraska.

My friends and I drove down to from Lincoln to Columbia the Friday before. Had a good time. Up until Mizzou took the lead in the 4th.

The drunken Mizzou fans began to get a bit, uh, “rambunctious.” Friends and I decided to leave the area we were watching/sitting (old lawn area behind the endzone), and had to watch it on the stadium concourse on a tv.

We would’ve been right next to “the catch,” had those Mizzou fans not started throwing sh** at us. It was still a great time, other than the walk back to the car after the game.

You're joking right... You're a Nebraska fan.

The thread title has Davison spelled Davidson.

Any time someone spells a former Husker's name incorrectly, it gets followed by a bunch of other former Husker player's name getting spelled wrong with a bunch of sarcasm... hence the Peters and Winstrom in the post you quoted.

It was "dubbed" judgment day because of the games being played the whole day, not just Nebraska-Mizzou or Michigan-PSU. North Carolina was also ranked high at the time (#5) and they were playing #2 Florida State on that particular Saturday, so you're WRONG!

ABC billed it judgment day during the week and again at the beginning of the day, Musburger and Fouts both referenced the judgment day term during the game.

The "laughing face" was for the fact that Musburger switched gears from the start of the game to the end, saying Nebraska was clearly the best team in the country, but changed his tune by games end. Oh, did you get butt hurt because I made light of Brent? Is he a hero of yours? You must be one of those Michigan fans who knows damn well that Michigan would have lost to Nebraska, deal with it.

This game brings back an odd memory. About the start of the 4th quarter I had to go my boss's house (in Lincoln) to meet up with her and her boss for a big dinner that night in Omaha. We're watching the game on her tiny kitchen TV when the final drive begins. The big boss says we're not leaving until the game is over, and that he'll just drive as fast as he needs to in order to get us to Omaha on time. He was true to his word, except that by the time the OT ends he's knocked back a couple of cocktails and decides he better not drive. So he hands me the keys to his brand new Mercedes and says, "Do what you need to to do to get us there."

Thankfully no tickets or accidents. And while we were not precisely on time, nearly everybody at the dinner was fashionably late and had a similar story to tell.

One of nebraska assistant coaches said several years later that Missouri was running illegally picks on our dbs all game long but no pi was called. Was this the same game that the grounds keepers had the sprinklers running on Friday and Saturday morning of the game?

I know their field was garbage. If you watch you will see our D linemen throwing big chunks of turf before most plays. Basically a painted sand box with some chunks of grass.

one TD was pretty obv...color guy said it should have been called

All I want to know: how the hell a below-average team could manage to score 38 on a Jason Peter defense????!!!!

They had some big sumbitching should pads back then. Must have been near the end of the neck roll era though. I was never a neck roll guy myself. But maybe that's what our o-line needs, some neck rolls. Could it hurt to try?

Watched at the old Icehouse on 84th & Giles. Craziest game atmosphere at a bar I have seen to this day, lol.
