Marshall opting out of the Independent bowl against Army

Even if their team is a shell of itself, you take the bowl bid. The exposure and chance for the younger guys to practice and get game experience is worth it. The decision by the team to skip the bowl in 2020 was monumentally stupid.
The decision by the coaching staff to let the players make the decision to skip the bowl was monumentally stupid.

If you’re on the selection committee to select which two teams get your bowl invite, you’re going to shy away from teams that have a known coaching change. I’m sure that’s always been the case to some degree. And they may not have much leeway. But the risk of a team forfeit and no game played is significant.

Fine the coach that left and the players. Not the schools fault.
Fine the coach for what offense? He simply took another job. Players basically did the same. No rules or laws broken. None of them made the decision for Marshall. I don’t like what is happening either but this isn’t the answer.

The exception was the Covid year were there was 12 bowls that had to cancel because of the pandemic..

Only 4 B1G teams had winning records that year and Michigan and Wisconsin only played in 6 games.
