Some P5 games get left out? No non-conference games?
Meh.
Here's a 77-team Super League plan, based on traditional conferences but with 11 in each.
One exhibition game, two non-con games, 10 conference games (round-robin).
Everybody gets 7 homes games (one exhibition, six regular-season).
Two bye weeks built in.
- WEEK ZERO games scheduled last Saturday in August against lower-division teams at Super League home stadiums.
- 2-game non-conference schedule among the Super League (1 home/1 away) to help with seeding later for possible wild card.
- Matchups would be determined based on previous year's results.
- Eighth-place team from X Conference plays eight-place teams from Y and Z conference.
- 10-game conference season determines league champion.
- Seven conference champs plus five wild cards make the 12-team playoffs
- Seeded by independent committee
- Top four seeds receive byes
- 5 vs. 12, 6 vs. 11, 7 vs. 10, 8 vs. 9 in first-round games played second Saturday of December at home field of lowest-seeded team
- Winners play top four seeds third Saturday in December at home field of lowest-seeded team
- Semifinals played as they are now, at rotating New Year's Six venues on New Year's Day
- Finals played second Monday of January at rotating neutral venues
- Nebraska would play all its former Big 8 opponents every year, plus BYU, Utah and CSU.
- If the service academies want to be a part of it:
- Air Force gets SMU's spot in SWC
- Army, Navy take East Carolina and Appalachian's spots in Big East
