I think you both right....Nebraska only made 3 million in profits last year and only 17 other D1 departments even turned any profit. So that 50 million from big 10 is literally the difference between bleeding into debt and being able to fund the future. But...when the current 40-80 year olds die the sport will die as it is hard to pass on the love of team without the hate of a rival. We have no reason to watch most of our games...no historical connection to any big 10 teams...and when we are bad there is literally no reason to go or watch, no ego or pride to pass on to the youth. And from a poltical point of view, the big 10 represents a college educated cohort and a massive diverse viewer base. The default political stance has to be moderate to left as this encompasses the most viewers and is acceptable to most advertisers. There is literally nothing the big 10 network could put forth from the right that wouldn't alienate and anger millions of people and cost them millions, even if they sympathize with right politics. They can't continue to pander to older men who won't be watching when they are dead...there has to be a transition to excite younger viewers or else the sport will go the way of Nascar...niche and only adored in the south.

Texas controlled everything and were constantly flirting with other conferences. We were proactive. We were smart. That's why we left for greener pastures. Winning solves everything. I've never said I want Nebraska to leave the Big Ten. I can easily despise its insufferable, entitled, gasbag programs whether Nebraska is in the conference or not.

I agree with most of what you said but it’s important to point out these athletic departments are operating businesses and they aren’t trying to turn profits. The goal is to spend what you make to avoid paying taxes and to justify more spending. If revenue was $20 million less, Nebraska isn’t going to post a $17 million loss. They are just going to spend less. The more money the athletic department generates the law of diminishing returns kicks in. Getting above essential spending also opens the doors for more corruptive spending.
I do think you are right that the sport is going to slowly die and being in the B10 is best for longevity for the athletic department but it’s at significant cost to the fanbase IMO.
Put on your Coach Prime Pjs. The ones with the trap door and feeties and see if your therapist is taking appointments on New Year's Day. Just let it all out to your shrink. You'll feel better.
