Its still early in the season but we must give Fred credit on what he has done since his first few years.

Most importantly, Fred realized that the lack of rebounding was killing this program, especially giving opponents 2nd chance points. His style of having five guys who fly down the court and chuck threes wasnt going to work in this conference. Rebounding and defense were lacking.

The past two years he has addressed this successfully. We were vastly improved in rebounding last year and at least for this game. We ended up only +2 in rebounding so it doesnt look crazy but it is when you consider how bad we used to be.

If Im not mistaken Creighton had zero second chance points. Remarkable turnaround.

So you're telling me that a head coach who in his first 3 years underperformed and struggled with his game day coaching at times can turn things around by recruiting the right players and replacing assistants? Now that's a revelation. I would say that the majority opinion on this board a couple of years ago was that Fred needed to be fired......

That was certainly my opinion

Hand up

Fred's early offenses were HORRIBLE. Most of the time was guys dribbling around and then hoisting up a contested three.

So glad he was able to course correct and figure out what he needed to compete in the B1G.

Now go get that tourney win!

Fred has done something no other Nebraska basketball and maybe any basketball coach has done in multiple ways. First he had the worst 3 years of any coach in school history. Then he turned that around to make the NCAA tournament.

For all the hate Trev gets, Fred turned a corner literally mid-season exactly when Trev got here, with no staff or team changes at that point. Pretty remarkable.

Zeigler and Howard joined the staff, 3 original members departed - including his top recruiter - ahead of the turnaround

Wrong again.

That’s not exactly true. The turnaround started when Derrick Walker rejoined the 22-23 team and NU started running a motion offense centered around him. Tominaga began to thrive and other guys also became more productive. Team went from unwatchable to pretty decent.

If Trev had anything to do with that, good for him. But I will always be a big fan of Walker for making it work.

You’ll have to forgive his shoddy memory.

He’s very, very stupid.

Getting rid of Matt Abdelmassih and bringing in Nate Loenser is one of the main reasons we've shown so much improvement in the last 2.5 years. Matt was toxic and hated being here. Nate is one of the best assistants in the country. I can't believe nobody has hired him to be a head coach yet.

Well that actually needs to happen. And historical expectations between basketball and football programs isn't in the same universe. People got tired of 9 and 10 win seasons with Pelini pretty quickly. So even if things do improve, will it be enough?

It was a LOT more financially prudent to churn assistants than the head coach especially when by most accounts that coach is doing everything he can to win and run the program the right way. There’s a lesson in that for athletic directors and fans IMO.

Well no shit.

I wasn't shitting on his post, I was agreeing with him. Why don't you ever just **** off. I don't want anything to do with you.
It was a snide comment. Agreeing would have been, “good point,” or “I agree with you.”

“Well no shit” is a snide response. If you didn’t want anything to do with me you shouldn’t have shit on me in my thread.

It’s a free board, I can post what I want, as long as I’m not breaking any rules. So guess you’ll just have to put me on ignore if you don’t want anything to do with me. It’s really that simple.

I was always in the camp that we should keep Fred. I know how cursed Nebraska basketball has been. Starting over with a new coach wasn’t going to change anything. As long as Fred was out there working and trying, not mailing it in like Frost, I felt like he should just keep going.

If he wins a tournament game, he will be loved for life.

Are there any rules here?

The turnaround started when he decided Matty A. was a trip to nowhere for this program. Then he observed how his old assistant T.J. at Iowa State took them to the promised land so quickly. The answer is defense, rebounding, strength and conditioning plus bringing in the needed transfers with the proper character and team orientation. Things are going in the right direction and Fred figured it out.
