Lessons to be learned.

what if I told you that we had a QB on the bench that was worse. Couldn’t throw. Fumbled a lot. But he was a real blue collar, lunch pail kid that everyone loved and respected. He was another Gerry Gdowski. Another Brook….i don’t even need to say his last name. 5 star heart.

Fixed it for ya

I’d be fairly satisfied with a seven and five season if these guys would just go out and brawl. I want to see a lot more chippiness. There is just a toughness that is no longer is present in football. What Huskers of old lacked in the past, they made up for it in fight. That’s what was amazing about Tom. There was not a nicer guy, yet somehow his teams weren’t nice. they were happy to go behind the alley with you
I feel like the guys we had in the recent past that DID act like this, would always get 15 yarders thrown on them, and then the fans threw a fit because they were 'undisciplined'. Cam Jurgens comes to mind. I know there was another dude or 2. But you are right. We havn't seen much of it for a long time.

Its gotten pathetic in the NFL. I’ve never seen so many defensive lineman throw up their hands like they were about to get caught robbing a liquor store when all they really did was open the front door.

I feel like part of this happens when kids don't believe in how or what they are being coached. Our defense has to see the bad blocking on the edges in practice, bad special teams etc. I've never seen it turn out well when a team is hoping one player will be their savior.
Those players need to step up and correct that stuff in practice

You a clarkeye fan are you?
He’s a fan of somebody not named Nebraska, getting digs and making defeatist statements.

With him and people like him, I skip over or ignore everything they say and all the responses to him. For some reason, I made exception for this post.

I think this is spot on. Players want to improve individually, while contributing as part of a solid team, with a game plan that succeeds more than it fails. They can tell when things are broken and not getting fixed. Then they lose faith in the coaches, and go through the motions.

Looking at the WR room particular, they have been a disappointment for getting open, blocking, holding on to balls. You know, just everything about being a WR. They probably don’t respect or fear their position coach.

remember 2021 Michigan State?

finished 11-2, beat a couple great ranked teams. also squeaked it out against some horrible teams. Also had an embarrassing stumble against Purdue. Then they got absolutely boat-raced by Ohio State 56-7 (sound familiar?)

they still went on to beat Penn State and win the Peach Bowl.

i'm not saying we're going to finish 11-2, but i'm saying there is precedent to getting crushed by still turning it around and having a nice season.

is Rhule capable of that? i'll believe it when i see it.

Our course has been to change coaches every 5 years. That hasn't worked either. We are in year 2 of this rebuild. We can't just start over again after 1.5 years. What recruit or coach would want any part of that nonsense.
Not after 1.5 years. But it's natural to have doubts when the rebuild starts going backward.

I don't totally disagree. But they can be hurt and we can still say it does nothing for me. That doesn't change the truth. These guys make great money, but it's not the driving force behind why they coach. They would be coaching for chump change if that's what the market delivered.

I guarantee they are doing some soul searching, probably no one more than Satterfield. He's not an idiot. He sees the same shitshow that we do. Change is hard however and it takes real guts to cut the losses and change course. We will see if he has what it takes to do that. If not then he should be gone.

We have 5 games left to prove that we are on the up and come and hopefully we see some results.
I think we're wasting time and energy with Satt. I think Rhule was wrong choosing him and his philosophy's on offense. We need a run first guy and offense . We need to build a quality line and run the ball when we want to. Till we do it's wasting time.

there are still people here who believe every week is a "case by case" basis and we can win by throwing it every play

Totally agree!!! DR's stats would be All-Big Ten if we had some type of running game to take the pressure off him. Now, defenses are playing man and putting pressure on him with no fear of the run game.

Probably because they bought in just like me, did we have a choice. I'm a firm believer that we get coaches in here that don't know how the conference works. We aren't OSU , they can run our offense, we can't. Adapt or die they say, we always die.

I remember when we would look forward to the beating we would give that poor sap at QB with this type of offense. Heck look what we did to Sander's. Now we have to endure watching a weekly throttling.....well I won't .

I remember. Anytime we went against a team with statue for a QB(good passer) who had a couple decent WRs and basically no running game to speak of, I knew we were gonna beat them. Now… we are that team and I don’t really have a great feel for what type of teams we matchup well against? (Really shitty teams I guess 🤷‍♂️)

You can win a lot of games (7-10 wins) with good off and def lines - even if you have shit skill players

See Iowa
get the lines figured out and build from there

I’m not sure Donovan is the right guy
I know Donovan's not the right guy. But there's only so much deadweight you can keep on staff before something's got to give.

If the WR's couldn't get separation from Rutgers or Indiana, why would we think they will against superior athletes in the secondary for OSU?

They won’t. Unless we magically find a way to rush for 150-200 yds against OSU I don’t expect to see anything different than what saw at Indiana. Probably worse if we’re being honest with ourselves.

Can't argue with much of this. I will say that I don't believe these guys are bad coaches. But they do have to figure out how to get the most out of this team and that might be more psychology then actually coaching.
Rhule is a joke as are the staff...the players know he doesn't take true responsibility...he isn't giving up pay, he isn't firing his buddies despite having a "pathetic" offense last year...in his words. Football doesn't lie...it is too competitive, too stressful, and too complicated. The truth comes out...on the road, 5-1 with a chance to go to a bowl, a chance to beat a ranked team on the road for the first time in forever...56-7, 28-0 in the 2nd half against the back up, against a new coach and a new roster. I don't like Trev but he might have left because he realized really quickly what was about to happened at good old NU.

nah. you will never see me calling for DR to be benched in favor of Haarberg.

I would like to see a little more of what HH brings with his heart combined with DR's undeniable physical ability, though.

intangibles are what separate a great quarterback from a great talent.
I think DR is hurt. Ball just doesn’t look the same since 1st half of Rutgers

It's still there with good teams. It's just not present with us.

Yep, I'm with you. There seems to be no raw emotion except for people like Barney. Hopefully there are some young guys that can be leaders and start to build the program. This team is never going to win without a leader (s) on each side of the ball.
The future of this program is going to come from talented, tough, underclassmen, that want to work hard, play hard, and hate to lose more than they love to win.

Not easy to hear but we as a fan base need to let the players come and let NIL do its job to fill the holes that we have. The cupboard has really been bare for a long time. We’ve got the same upperclassmen making the same mistakes over and over. That body language they talked about needs to move on. It’s going to take time and that not for us fans because we want to see the team win now.

Rebuild is the key word

I get it. Like everyone on this board, I want to see the team have success NOW! But there has been a black cloud over this program for quite some time and the best direction is to get new talent here, added to the talent we have and let it develop. I’m totally on board with changing any assistant coaches that aren’t working out but we need to ride with Rhule and stay the course.

What was about to happen? Hell its been happening for a better part of the last 20 years. Im not going to bail out now. It's too early for that. This team has too many holdovers from the last regime. Have to give him at least 4 years to right the ship IMHO.

I don’t view this game as a moral victory, but you were right, you are never quite as good or as bad as you think. Hopefully this team can make something of themselves in November.

I've coached for a long long time. 30 years at the HS level to be exact. One thing that I know to be true is that you are never quite as good or as bad as you think. This weekend sucked and the last several years have too. Coaching makes a difference, players make a difference. I believe that we have good enough in both of these areas to right the ship to the point of 6 or 7 wins. It's just a commitment to change and adaptation. We shall find out if thats what these guys have.

Several years ago my team...(my defense to be exact) got boat raced in the 3rd game of the year. Platteview was loaded with athletes and they ran circles around us....Set all kinds of records. Score was 70 something to doesn't matter. When we got done with that game. We talked about what we needed to do to be better against one of the best teams in the state.

We thought we were pretty good but that game was an eye opener. We adapted, made changes. Got better! Played them in the Semi-finals on their home turf. That first game they could have scored a thousand points against us. We lost the semi-final game 24-14. And had the ball at the end with a chance to win until a fumble gave them the ball and their final score in the waning minutes.

My point. All is not lost. This team can still achieve if...and that's a big if coaches are willing to adapt and change. Until then all we can do is sit back and hope they do.

Were you really a head coach or just an unpaid linebacker position coach ?

It's weird how people who have never coached football discount decades of coaching experience.
Not saying I know everything (unless its about politics ), but I've been around the block a few times when it comes to the gridiron (using that word is proof).

I remember one time in high school we took one on the lip. Was early in the season. We got dominated.... no point in beating around the bush.

The next week we played a state ranked team to the wire before ultimately falling. We continued to get better as the year went on and ended up winning our league. We met the team that dominated us early in the year in the playoffs and lost a thrilling game... one that was unfortunately largely decided by the zebras (15 years later and I'm still pissed LOL)

Point being that coaching matters. Even though we lost to OSU last week it made me happy to see the amount of fight we put up after getting dominated by Indiana. I will be curious to see how the next 4 games go... hopefully last week was a sign of better things to come
