- Are they Husker fans?
- If so, are they passionate or casual?

Talking with some fans of other programs and they cannot believe the fan following Nebraska still has after so many miserable years. Then debated whether the next generation would keep showing up - especially the ones that have never witnessed Nebraska win anything. That topic peaked my interest, so thought I would ask.

I’ll start - 2 boys and 2 girls. Both girls casual. Watch the games if there is a gathering, otherwise not. 1 boy follows pros, so casual Husker fan, watches now and then. Other boy watches all games, but went to Iowa State, so passionately follows them, casually follows Huskers.

Most kids will have in their memory of Nebraska football as being the team that sucks and plays boring football. And that's only natural, for most of their lives, that is the only truth they knew. They don't have the same emotional attachment as a lot of us growing up, where we'd be bawling if the Huskers lose and elated with a win. During the time I was growing up, I was already starting to see more Texas and Oregon hoodies than I ever did Nebraska. Kids don't have near the emotional attachment, so they'll likely grow up to be more casual fans, if at all. Despite the sellout streak, there's been a tremendous amount of permanent damage done to this fanbase over the last decade-plus. It's delusional to think the fanbase is as strong as it once was.

My 16 year old son never became much of a Husker fan, he knows I am and he sincerely feels bad for me. He has started to follow the NFL and is a Lions fan. My daughter liked going to a couple of games in Lincoln but she doesn’t care. So for me, 0 out of 2 when they become adults will ever go to a game or buy any merchandise.

2 boys. Oldest has zero interest in football. Youngest is a casual Cornhusker fan. We try to go to a game every year but he doesn't usually watch them on TV.

I told mine recently it sucks they've never experienced us being good. I told em we lost 3 times in 5 years when I was about their age. It's really sickening where we're at.

3 boys, early 20s. One doesn't care about anything but dirt bikes. Two are big fans and went to 3 home games with me. They've even bought retro Husker gear. In my early season exuberance I promised a trip if we make a bowl, so, we're going.

My kids have never seen a good Husker team. They are 10x more passionate and intense than I am, and, for better or worse, I'm pretty into it. Tears were shed on Friday.
My "kids" are 48 and 45. My daughter went to NU in '94-'95 and fell in love with Berringer and that whole monster program. She still comes over every week and cheers on the Huskers, but realizes we're never gonna be like that again. Her two sons are early 20's, could not be less interested in Husker football.

My son, graduated from U of Iowa but has been and continues to be a big NU fan. When he was younger he worked out with John Parella. From Parella, he told me early on don't get too carried away with Callahan, because the players were gonna soon hate him. He watches every Husker game and we talk about it afterwards. The majority of his best friends are professional/ex football stars. From Brady to Brees to Herschel to Spurrier to Mark Ingram. He talks daily to Ben Watson, former TE for Pats and is the football analyst on the SEC network.

My adopted son played RB for the Hawkeyes, his position coach was Bielema and his head coach was Ferentz, could not have more nice things to say about each of them. He's black and never had an issue with that weight coach that caused the furor. Until this year, he was former Co-Chairman of the Republican Party in LA County and is now part of the Trump transition team. You'll see him on Fox News with Trace Gallagher a few times a month lately. My kids are plugged in.

My wife has been into NU football since her "boyfriend" Vince Ferragamo was playing QB for the Huskers in 1975 and watches every game with me. When "Tough" Tony Davis was hitting on her in 1973, she told him, "You're nothing special." She is one of very few women who actually has a clue how sports and football works. She's the one who always reminds me, regarding Husker football:
"Always save a little room for disappointment." Very sage advice.

Myself, been a Husker fan since 1962, like a lot of others, it's in our blood. Good, bad or ugly I'm gonna watch. It's been a rough 20+ years. And I don't see any improvement on the way. I KNOW how effing good you have to be to make some noise in this sport, and NU is 1,000 miles away.

There's always next year, right?

My boy is 10
Has been to 8 Huskers games. He’s never seen them win
Oh dang. Hopefully he doesn't take the losses as hard as we adults do. It's certainly a different era. As a 10yr old I witnessed mostly like 45-6 Husker blowouts where the greatest excitement came in the 4th Qtr to see some of our new I-Back hopefuls get some playing time.

Without having littles of my own there sure seems to be no discernable slow down in Husker Fan Day and the like in kids getting autographs and meeting players.

The moral of this story is only take your kids to the guaranteed-win games... oh wait... what are those? 😂

My son almost 23 very passionate. Loved them when he was younger. Didn’t care much throughout his teens but back at it now. Daughter 19 SO at UNO will watch games. Sat through Friday nights game in the cold follows them but doesn’t care much if they lose

7 yo boy just likes Fortnite
5 yo boy doesn’t give a shit
3 yo boy says, “go buckeyes” because his cousins taught him that

None of them gaf about the Huskers. We live in Indiana by ND so nobody casually talks about them either other than in our house

Oldest son (28) went to UNL on a full ride at Raikes and a computer programming whiz. Never cared for sports, ever, and does not watch.

Son #2 (25), attended the other in-state school to play D1 golf — but is a Husker fan. Came home last week and first thing he did was go to Wisky FB game. We text during games and commiserate about bad calls and bad breaks.

Daughter (23) went to the other in-state school. She is a casual fan.

Son #3 (20) currently attending UNL. Huge fan. Attends FB and BB games. We watch games together when he is home. We plan meals and snacks around the game. He gets frustrated with losses just as much as I do.
