Dana will be calling plays

how emasculated can one man get?

good grief, Rhule. this is approaching Salem-levels of cruelty.

I thought they were friends.

also - what was the point of hiring a 2nd OC this off-season only to pass him over for a guy who hasn't been part of the program for more than 5 minutes?

I have more questions than answers. as usual with this regime.
Please tell me you’re joking.

Rhule just massively increased the talent at OC with a quick and decisive decision.

DH has a PROVEN history of success as an OC. His numbers he has produced are impressive - something Satt has NEVER had.

I would think you would be applauding this move.

For ONCE we have a HC that cut off his Achilles heel before it killed him.

I'm not sure anything could happen to make it a dumb move. Only dumb move would've been just standing pat with Satterfield and watching the ship sink. At least by changing you give yourself a chance. Imo the ONLY dumb move would've been NO move .

Holla

Well it’s not the only dumb move. (doing nothing) He could’ve hired me or something.

I’ve gotta believe we will see new wrinkles… heck, just calling a game differently than Satt has called would be a new wrinkle all by itself. It was so frustrating watching teams jump out plays because they knew both of Satt’s tendencies.

At least with Holgorsen we will get different tendencies and the play calls won’t be so predictable.
No arguments there. The worst thing I saw though was the inability to make adjustments.

I hope Dana took a crash course on the current offense and is just tweaking things because trying to install a new offense on a bye week is just asking for a disaster. Time will tell.
This offense is ABSOLUTELY worse than the sum of its parts. No question about it.

Right now, this week, it can be better without dumping the entire scheme. Which is not something that can be done until next season.

Rhule probably regrets not getting this done nine months ago when Dana could have installed a system he knows. But I have a hunch he may have had some contact with Rhule at times over the 9 months so he may have some good concepts that can be quickly utilized. All in all, it smells of desperation and that only means Rhule is about where most of us are these days as a repeat 5-7 looms.

"quick and decisive"

we interviewed Holgerson in the offseason because Satt sucks
we hired a different person to be Co-OC in the offseason because Satt sucks
we allowed our entire team to wallow, forced our phenom QB to answer pointed questions about the OC and are now amidst a second straight late-season swoon because Satt sucks
we bring in outside consultants because Satt sucks
we allow Satt to stay on staff despite his very public emasculation and demotion

the above represents a 10-month timeline

you and I have very different definitions of "quick and decisive"

only disconnect is the actual philosophy

what Rhule claims he wants to see and who he hires to implement it are diametrically opposed

it's not a failure of Satt to not instill toughness and commit to a run game - that's not who he is

this is what continues to confound me about our figurehead and why I really don't know that he has a clear vision to map his program to

we have nothing to hang our hat on as a program
You may very well be right… he may know the talking points and says what the fans want to hear.

It is weird that he says he wants smashmouth but Satt doesn’t understand that concept… I think it’s possible Rhule brought him in believing that Satt could change and evolve his offense into more of a rushing attack, but when we got Raiola as our QB, the thought was the passing game will open the running game. Well, that hasn’t happened.

And this could simply be me wanting to put the best construction on this, which is my default. So who knows? Certainly not me.

I'm just happy Rhule pulled the trigger. A few weeks ago it didn't sound like he had the nutsac and was going to be stuck in the same rut as previous coaches. I'll admit I'm not sure it gets any better, but at least there is progress in at least trying to move the needle. The goal is to score points and hopefully Dana can get that done. On the flip side, hopefully TW reacted well to some outside opinions as well. I don't fault Rhule for trying to pull some levers. Is it too late? Probably, but I'm happy he is doing it.

The difference between RW and Satt was on display in the UCLA game. Our first half defensively was awful. Second half was light years better. That is because TW made adjustments. Satt? Ha.

Just because Dana didn’t come doesn’t mean Rhule didn’t offer and try to get him.

From DH’s perspective holding out probably got him an extra $500k because we are more desperate now.

Any other time and you let him go. But with the new rules, you don't have the limited coaching staff. And Sat's paid through the end of next season anyway. So if he can be helpful and not be a disruption, why not.

So, I heard Satt is hanging Christmas lights around Rhule's house.

He tried to get previously. Hired a different guy to assist. That didn’t work so 10 weeks later he is making another change and finally got the guy he wanted in the first place.

Why are you locking onto my three words and ignoring the rest?

And yeah “quick and decisive” because he called him Sunday morning and had him here the next day and made the decision Tuesday to have him call plays.

That’s pretty decisive. Holgersen says “yeah I’m interested” and Rhule says “see you tomorrow”

I agree, I don't want to see any of those 4. We got any more on the shelf?
I think if I was running the air raid I would want a big back to take advantage of a light box. Gabe/Donte. However, modern trend is for a fast guy out of the backfield. I think Rahmir/Emmett and I doubt we see the rest.

It will at the very least be addition by subtraction. Just eliminating any play that requires perimeter blocking will be a plus.

Play calling is overrated. Who is designing the game plan? Any new schemes? Play calling makes little to no difference if the game plan is horrible and the play design is problematic.
Holgersen's mesh concept alone would make a big difference for this offense. I much prefer schemes that get the middle of the field open rather than relying on outside screen plays with shitty blocking. Hopefully they were able to install that over the bye week

Whatever happened earlier with Holgerson wasn’t money at all. He makes the same regardless because he is still being paid by Houston but there’s an offset clause.

He might stay, I can’t see a big list of schools that would bring him in as an HC at this point. He may be best suited as an OC for now.

Fingers crossed he’s enough to get us one more win to make a bowl

I really don’t care about a bowl game. I’d love to see a competent football team more than anything. We haven’t played 4 quarters all year. And once again, our most impressive game is a loss

I would bet a large sum of money that Dana was offered the same title that Thomas ended up getting but he wanted complete control. We’ll see if changing an OC with 3 games helps or turns in to a complete train wreck.

We might not see the benefit until next fall but it was obvious changes were coming.

Over a million to be the OC in Lincoln is a damned good paycheck.

I can get behind this. It seems as though what has made him a good coach in the past has been his assistant coaches. I still believe he can set the vision well. But if the coaches can’t implement the vision, he looks like a pretty bad coach. And right now, the assistants aren’t implementing the vision very well.

He isn’t a genius like Tom Osborne. He’s a figurehead like Bobby Bowden. He knows what he wants to see but he can’t do it himself. He better continue to upgrade this staff if he wants to remain the head coach of the Huskers.
I think Rhule is a very good defensive coach but has to rely on his OC. Make no mistake, he’s a very bright guy but Tom had a photographic memory. He didn’t need to look at his play sheet to call plays and was always thinking a series or two down the line.

One of the agreements in Holgorsen’s buyout from Houston was that he had to seek employment. That’s why Sonny Dykes set him up with that cushy analyst job where he could work remotely.

If Holgerson wants to be a HC again he’ll have to make a splash as a coordinator. No better place to do it than a struggling program with a 5 star QB.

I think people think that the "seek employment" thing is real but none of these schools are giving a **** about that. No one is chasing down a former coach over a few million dollars, it is bad business for the school to do that.
