Coaching Carousel

Not really losses
Oregon athletic department was MORE THAN OK loosing both. They felt lucky when Taggert left and had decided Cristibol wasnt wprthy of head guy. I was surprised they went with Lanning but they have identified young coach talent well. Chip and now Lanning. I have a friend in the department there and Lanning isnt going anywhere for a long time. Theyre prepared to make him the highest paid coach in CFB in a few years if trajectory stays the same. Kind of just waiting to see how he does post Bo Nix.

They’re nuts. Ride with the guy. He is in fact a good college coach. ADs thinking they’re going to find the next Kirby Smart are chasing fantasies. The odds of UCLA getting somebody better are maybe 10%.
I agree

UCLA has like 600 wins all time. They basically avg 6 wins per season. No one goes to their games, no one watches their games.

They got a coach that knows what he is doing and is at the very least getting them to 7 and 8 wins.

They might have one of those magical seasons here and there but for the most part, they are just an avg team with a big name.

I can only guess that with the money they will be making now they feel like they can get a better (maybe younger) coach.

But the resume for the new guy will not look like anything that Kelly had on his resume.

I agree with all except no one watches their games. I was disappointed to see so much blue in the stands when they last came to Memorial.

Yeah, that is true but their home games seem to be empty.

The Dave Amanda stint at Baylor….. what all from grace. Kind of sad. Not sad because all the money he is making, or what he will make if fired but just sad.

He was considered a genius DC at Wisconsin and a great recruiter. UW paid him squat so he goes money….to LSU.. Wins the championship with Burrow and superior athletes in Baton Rouge. . .

Hired at Baylor after the Broyles S-show and goes:

2-7 (Covid)
12-2
6-7
3-7

If Baylor I have to give him one more year, but won’t be surprised if he is fired this year. He is considered a great guy and a players coach, with tough discipline, according to my Wisconsin connections.wa Badgers would be glad to get him back.
Dave Aranda was hired at Baylor after Matt Rhule had them humming along at 11-3 with a sugar bowl appearance.

Lanning has publicly stated he's not interested in A&M or any other coaching job. He said he's staying at Oregon. Now of course all coaches say those kind of things but I think in this particular case it's true. Now that Oregon is headed to the B1G and he can be assured of getting paid well if he continues to have success, why would he want to leave. Just about any other job he could/would take likely would offer less stability for him.

That is not true at all. Cristobal had them rolling, and they were very upset when he decided to bolt for Miami.

this right here. Oregon fans have revised their opinion on him, but the fact of the matter is beating Ohio State in Columbus was their biggest win in a long time.

If he continues to win I bet he's gone within 5 years.

Yeah, I think you make every effort to keep that guy for 10 years. Right mix of youth and knows what he’s doing.

i can't imagine a better job than oregon. tons of money. west coast talent. lovely location. competing with illinois, maryland, and purdue instead of the sec. why in the world would lanning leave that pathway to the cfp for college station, texas? they'll hire elko or traylor.

baylor was the worst team k-state faced this season. aranda has gone from confusius to an empty hat. his defense was clueless. and the rest were lost.

All depends on if his wife likes the area. If momma ain’t happy ain’t nobody happy.
And don’t think the wives in Oregon don’t love that there’s no sales tax. So all those shopping sprees and no tax.
Here in my part of SoCal, 10.75% sales tax on pretty much anything you buy. Only grocery items don’t have sales tax. That’s a lot when you are spending like a millionaire

He has an additionl 1 million added to retirement account for each year he is there. He get as many or more fringe than any coach i have ever heard of. He isnt leaving and may retire amongst the greats if he continues his current career trajectory. Maybe he has pro aspirations but I have heard he does not.
I am not well connected in sports but my great friend works high up in the AD in Eugene. LANNING WILL BE THERE FOR A LONG LONG TIME. THEY CAN AND WILL MATCH Any offer.

This is what makes the Scott Frost situation so disappointing. Younger guy, knows the terrain, and with an innovative offense. He was making plenty of money and had an extra long rope. Continuity is important, so you would expect to have them for 15 to 20 years.

When your guy leaves, you don’t know what you’re going to get and if the wrong hire(s) might set you back Indefinitely.

You put a moat around Lanning as long as he’s producing. They obviously think they are better off now than before he arrived.

Simply not true. They didnt try to match when they could have. He isnt likeable at all feom what I have heard.
he was made the 2nd highest paid coach in the conference at his alma mater. there was no matching him.

saying he wasn't likable is ridiculous considering how great he was at recruiting. whether or not some losers on twitter didn't personally like him says nothing about coaches, players, and admin.

Im speaking second hand from admin. He hadnt been a head coach and there was buyers remorse. That is all Ive heard. Some high ups didnt think he was showing well as head coach, recruiting made them happy but developing and game day he didnt come across well. Got the job because he was the easy hire. Taggert brought him there in the 1st place.

I think so too

I would guess the age of the coach might come into play.

If I was 38 and had a chance to make 11 million a year at AM or 7 million a year at Oregon, I am taking the money.
Good point. I could also see a guy stay at one school for many years. Become wealthy. And then when they get closer to retirement in their 50's, decide to take that one shot at a pressure cooker job in a major conference. Take the huge contract but feel less pressure if things turn south on them after a couple years.
