Cav needs to be gone

I've said this too my buddies for years. What ever he's coaching his players are getting it. Zero player development and we are talking about 4* dudes. Not walk ons and 2* guys. This is worst OL I've ever seen and I've been watching for 50 years.

Has to be gone now? A little late. His boss should never have hired him or most of the other people he initially hired based on friendship/loyalty to begin with.

Riley made the decision after last season that whoever is still employed coming into this season is who he is going to be in that bunker with until the end. No time left to fire position coaches. He has to live with the consequences of his terrible management decisions, unfortunately so do we.

I do not support keeping Riley on while all the assistants continue to get reshuffled and the reset button continues to get pushed. He had his chance but at 60+ years old with decades of coaching experience you cannot fail this miserably when naming your staff and keep your job. The entire defensive staff has been recycled and we are now on to the offensive side of the ball. I believe he said when he took the job he wanted one more shot at big time success. He had his shot and the program has deteriorated.

I suspect that Riley wouldn't be able to survive if the O line problems don't get fixed quickly. I think we have good enough talent to play better than what we've seen. I love Riley. I liked Banker though I didn't think he was exactly an innovator on defense. I still don't believe that firing Banker was Riley's idea. IF Cav was let go, I don't think it would be Riley's idea either. Corn Nation has a great article on the coaching turnover since 2001.

After last season all I heard was that Cav was dealt a bad hand on who he had to work with blah blah blah... If you can't see how over his head he is now.. You for real have blinders on. He has got to go
It is true he was dealt a bad hand on who he had to work with. It is also true that he's not a very good coach.

IMO the problem hasn't been turnover. The problem has been the horrible hires that have left no choice but to make changes. Let's see how things go the rest of the way but I don't recall a coach failing like the trajectory has been this year and then righting the ship. If things are heading in the wrong direction more years in the wrong direction leaves you further from your goal

You have said you believe we can still win the west .. Maybe you are right but man I don't know how anyone with any football knowledge can look at the quality of football being played by this team and even begin to believe that

So there's nothing Riley can do to please you (other than start winning of course)?

Keeps Cav, Riley needs to go. Fires Cav, Riley still needs to go.

I agree that we've looked terrible at times. I don't know if we can fix it this year or not. Texas fixed it this year. Iowa has started like this and fixed it by the end of the year on multiple occasions and I don't think many Husker fans think of Ferentz as a great coach. I think while we have some glaring weaknesses at certain positions that we have enough talent to compete in the B1G. We'll find out eventually but in the mean time I'm going to root for my team and this staff to get it done.

Yes. He can win this year - 7 wins probably gets him another year. The quality of play that his team has displayed this year does not IMO project to 7 wins. He is going to have this year to see what he can do.

We are all going to root for things to get better but that doesn't mean we have to manufacture sunshine after the poor play we have seen in all 3 games this year. Win or lose the play of this team has been flat out poor

I don't think it's manufacturing sunshine to try to find positives. It's been really easy to find the negatives and angrily repeat them. Nobody's happy with the game. The question is how do you go forward right now. Firing a coach right now is not a sane option. IMO, calling for a firing is harmful too. I'm just going to be patient and see what happens. All of the angry venting on this board is just that. Venting. I guess it can be therapeutic but it roiling negativity can also be harmful to people.

Riley and Cav are not going anywhere this season. Diaco takes over at the end of the season , a couple years ahead of plan.

Diaco takes over as head coach? I'm willing to give him a chance as DC, but I can't imagine how anyone would ever see him as head coaching material. He was a disaster as head coach in every imaginable way.

I have read a lot if crazy stuff on here lately but there can be no way this happens. Heads would explode, more than normal. This would not meet the definition of "splash hire.". Not sure it would meet any definition. Right now, with the way the D is going, if I were a high school kid I would not want to play in a bend but not break system.

Diaco was a train wreck as a head coach. No thank you.

I have had enough hiring good coordinators and hoping they can grow into the role.

Not every good manager makes a good CEO

If they don't bring in a proven winner when Eichorst and Riley get canned this isn't a program serious about righting the ship.

I agree totally with what your saying... I just couldn't understand how members on here last year couldn't see that it was also terrible coaching and not just the bad hand he was dealt.

When outnumbered by a wide margin, one has to choose their battles carefully.

I would argue that the reason the negative things are repeated is because the crappy play - mistakes etc etc have been repeated each week to date in the season. Play a clean game and not look like a junior college team and I would guess the negative vine would decrease. Not really interested in celebrating individual battles when we are getting our ass kicked in the war

I know he said he and his wife Dee wanted to go on one more big adventure. It certainly turned into that, unfortunately the entire state of Nebraska is along for the ride.

After TO a long time assistant with no head coaching experience was hired. Then in desperation a pro coach with no college head coaching experience was hired (right after he lost the whole Raider locker room). Then we hired a DC with no head coaching experience. We finally hired a guy with years of head coaching experience, but aside from a couple CFL cups, he didn't have a track record of success. I have always wondered why we can't hire a young guy with HC experience who has proved himself at smaller programs (like NIU's coach yesterday).

thats just foolish talk!

(That was sarcasm)

Watching the Redskins O-line blow people off the LOS (coached by Callahan). He did the same when he coached the Dallas O-line. Why weren't we better at the position when he was here? Seems like the position has been the worst on the team for a while.

If Diaco is our next coach he's going to need to quit tucking his shirts into those old school sweat pants. I simply can't root for anyone who looks that dorky. Seriously.

Cav won't be retained. No way. I think a lot of people with in the program and a lot of fans made excuses for him for 3 1/2 years. (Recruiting, injuries, system, etc). I think so many fans liked him as a person and Milt Tenopir's approval made many people ignore so many red flags. But it was obvious day 1, he just didn't have what it takes. And I was banned 2 years ago for a few months for stating the exact same thing about him that everyone is stating now. Kind of ironic but I take no hard feelings...

The thing that ALWAYS jumped out at me was early in Mike Riley's hire, he said his dream "is to run 10 offensive lineman". He said he's never had enough to do that. Then Cav stated over and over again "he only runs 5". It seemed pretty obvious that Rileys goals weren't necessarily the same as Cav. That Riley desired more of a rotation at O-line & Cav would never do that. I also got the felling that Cav couldn't handle the organization of trying to rotate.

And I can see Mike Riley making one more year. But no way can he ignore Cavs inability to coach and develop. Cav & SE are the on the way out and will be scapegoat for the problems this year.

Ideally I'd love to see Reggie Davis start working with the O-line a little this year and then have him take over O-line coach next year. But they'd need someone to kind of help with RBs this year. So it probably wouldn't work

It's a hard to believe that Riley would bring someone with him to Nebraska that has such a different philosophy than he does. If that's true, then Riley is even more inept than anyone here thinks he is.
