Buzz Leaving A&M for Maryland

I remember wanting him in the past when we made one of our bad hires. He'll be good at Maryland.

Buzz just jumps at odd geographic jobs. Some success at Marquette and goes to VaTech. Then he goes back home to Texas, only to jump to Maryland.

Must be that he was being forced out and/or making a lot more dough $$$$ at the new school. IDK.

He has good success at all stops makes the tournament. But it seems after 5-6 years he has the itch to move to another job / challenge. Some people in every profession are just like that. 🤷

Has he ever been fired? If he's a good coach and can win some games, I suppose it's good to get out while the getting is good. For the vast majority of basketball coaches, staying at one place too long will eventually get you fired.

Anyway, he's a good coach. I like the fact that he still wears a suit at games. Love that old school approach.

Doesn’t look like he has ever been fired. So you may have a point. Leave while the iron is hot .

Good analysis, Bo!
The real head scratcher was his move to Va tech from Marquette . at the time was a major step down. maybe as @Dean Pope says he doesn’t want to stick long enough anywhere to be forced to look for work. He wants to choose where he works.

Choosing to live in College Park, MD, of all places is an interesting choice. Especially for a Texas guy. Seems like he could have had much better options. You couldn't pay me to live in the D.C. area.

Yeah, and that's not how I would do it. I would find a place that I was happy and stay there. Which would mean that I would get fired at some point!
Popester, So are you talkning about Fred? If so, you nailed it!!!

Is Trev really going to hire Chris Beard?

It is amazing that when Trev was AD at NU he was a huge pussy, a penny pincher and scared to hire coaches with some "background issues" but now he will hire Beard (which is a great hire).

Haha maybe Beard just wants to give the finger back to UT for firing him. I know they probably didn't have a choice (much like us with Mickey) but that whole deal seemed to be largely blown out of proportion from everything I saw.

Does seem a little ironic that Trev fired Mickey and may now hire Beard for very similar circumstances. I think the biggest difference is that Beard's accuser walked it back like almost immediately once she sobered up. Mickey's girl dug in on it a little longer IIRC

Oh my god, you are right! I totally forgot about the Micky thing!

Beard would be my #1 guy that I think could win at Nebraska. Not that he'd ever stoop to coach here at this point. But, he's a no bullshit, no excuses winner. His teams at Texas Tech were ferocious.

Gotta believe if aTm wanted to keep him, matching Maryland money wouldn't be a problem.

Unless Buzz wanted out of aTm. Money doesn’t matter if you want out bad enough. I know a number of guys who had to write 6-7 figure checks to get out of a marriage. Most say it was the best money they ever spent.

Mickeys wife never took anything back. She just didn’t show up for court and it was dismissed. Don’t know about Beard . But Mickey is a POS with a history of beating women.

odd that the ex maryland coach left because he didn't have the resources he wanted and the next day they hire Buzz from A@m. I FIND this very odd.

I think McMillan might be a good hire, but then I'm not an A&M booster. They are probably losing their minds.

A risky hire for sure. There are so many good coaches in the SEC, that I am skeptical he will succeed. He's never coached major college basketball, even as an assistant. It looks like his teams live and die by the three, and try to full-court press. The good teams in the SEC will pick them apart.

People will say that Nate Oats did the same thing, went from High School coach to Buffalo to Alabama. But he had a lot more success at Buffalo than McMillan has at Samford.

So I know a guy who knows Buzz Williams pretty well. When he first got into coaching he did a study of all college Head Coaches. His research found that any coach that stays at a program for more than 7 years, no matter where the program was when you started, if you don’t do well they will fire you, if you do do well they stop thinking about where it was when you took it over and reestablish new standards based on how you are doing. So if he takes over a last place team and gets them to 3rd, then falls back to 6th, no one remembers that you took over a last place team. They just say that 6th isn’t where you were last year, you’re slipping and now you’re on the hot seat.

He was at Marquette for 6 years, went to 5 NCAA tournament, 3 sweet 16s and 1 elite 8. He thought what are the chances I am going to repeat this over the next 6 years. So he took the Va Tech job. Va Tech was a mess, he got a 6 year guaranteed contract, took them to the NIT year 2, 3 NCAA tournaments and in his 5th year a sweet 16. Then left for A&M took over a sub 500 team, year 3 NIT runner up then 3 straight NCAAs now off to Maryland.

Maryland is the first job he’s taken where he isn’t taking over a struggling program. But if Queen leaves for NBA and some of the other player transfer, expectations will be lower and he will build it back up and will leave before they can reestablish a new floor. That is why he has never been fired or pushed out.
