Burtch tore meniscus, Suspensions

Why would Riley ask the reporter who was suspended, as the OP quotation indicates. Sorry, but I think this has to be in reference to BYU.

The way I read it, he wasn't asking the writer, he was asking. Associate AD, Dan Van De Riet

Is it just me or is that article way to revealing of private coach discussions?

Before I read the article, "yes", after I read the article, "no". In context it does not look as bad (not great by any means, but not bad). I do really like *laughter eruption*, and can see using it:

Hey Devine did you really trust the coaches when they said you would be the only running back so you withdrew your commit from ISU *laughter eruption*.

You guys never cease to amaze. Everything is out of line! Golly, we better hope none of these kids get their FEELINGS HURT BY AN ARTICLE THAT TELLS THE TRUTH!!!!

The problem that you're having is that you're actually getting some honest information out of the coaching staff, and you don't know what to do with it. What a departure to hear some actual information on what's going on. Quick, somebody tell us of an injured guy that "he'll be fine," that a new player is "swimming in it right now," and that somebody else "is doing some good things."

Good for Bray that he has a read on his players to know if he's gonna lose a kid if he rides pine all year. They're not all created equal. Remember Aaron Green? Braylon Heard? Talented kids end up gone if you can't find a use for them. Some guys would rather play in the FCS than warm an FBS bench.

Reporter said he and Riley were high school & college friends and that he covered Riley during Riley's entire time as OSU.
He doesn't think Nebraska really has much better talent than anything he saw at OSU, especially at WR. Thinks if Armstrong goes down, we could be in real trouble as QB's behind him are a drop-off. Also doesn't think our RB's are that great. Does think our O and D lines are better. He also specified that this is based off of just one practice, so it's just his general observation from a limited sampling.

So we've got two very different perspectives on the talent of the Husker football team. The BTN analysts say Nebraska has the talent to win the West and they've been scratching their head why they can't figure it out. Then we have a guy who says talent is about the same as Oregon State. This is why they are called opinions.

I'm going to go out on a limb and say the talent level is obviously not elite, but is most definitely higher than at Oregon State (unless the reporter was referring to Riley's better 10-2 teams.)

I also am not really that enthused by the running back corps. I think they are serviceable guys, but the fact that the coaches bent over backwards to land Stevenson (sp?) tells me they might agree.

Nebraska has shown the ability to compete with the best teams in the country the last few years and looked like the better team during parts of those games. They just couldn't keep it going for a full game. Ever. Even against bad teams. Saying Nebraska has equal talent of Oregon state is ridiculous and the results of games despite Oregon state having superior coaching strongly disagree with that.

Let's put it this way, if what this reporter (who is friends with Riley) is correct, then he's also saying Pelini is a much better coach than Riley. And that I refuse to buy at this point

The guy watched one practice. One. He is probably taking the best players Riley ever had and comparing that team to Nebraskas team this year. If that is the case, then yes, they do have better WRs and RBs. If we are going against Riley's last couple years, year for year, then no, OSUs teams hardly compare.

are we still sure he wasnt referrering to the BYU suspensions
I don't think there is much doubt that he's referring to NU players. I'm thinking that somebody (the reporter) might have underestimated the potential repercussions of putting some of that in that article. Things have definitely changed in North Stadium. We'll see if the reporter is given that kind of access to a coaches meeting again and if he is I am suspecting that the coaches will be more careful about how they present things. I like the openness and honesty but some of that probably would have been better left out of the article. The suspension news was going to get out eventually in any case.

The reporter is used to having 150 people read his articles, not 150,000. This. Is. Nebraska.

Exactly. Does OR St even have a football board? Riley will handle it in the right way. I actually think the article has already been pulled. At least the only place I can find it to read is on here.

I wouldn't call at least one of them a "suspension"

I'm thinking I know which DB Stewart was talking about. Bo loved the kid for some reason but he couldn't cover poop with a paper towel let alone a WR one on one.

We will have to wait until at least tonight but I think the suspensions are in reference to BYU, don't think you would allow that information to be released via offhanded comments that came up in a casual meeting.

Wishful thinking.

I have a feeling this is the case, and in most other programs, this would not be such a big deal.

It does tell me at least a little something, and that is, coach Riley hasn't quite yet figured out how things sometimes work in the fishbowl here.

I trust that Riley knows how to motivate kids. Every kid reacts differently. Maybe he even wants the kid to transfer.
H3 can help him out! The rest of the kids he can trash their future alma-mater to.

Not what I am hearing but we will see.

Banker is scheduled to speak after practice. I wonder if Riley makes a guest appearance to put the kibosh on the brouhaha.

Riley is going to address it after practice tonight they just said on Sports Nightly. I don't think there is any doubt that its Husker players. The one hurts.

Hopefully the team will learn from it and mature.

I love it...Riley is coaching another guys players, that guy set up a culture of blame and lack of accountability. Players were gods who could not be benched or criticized. Riley doesn't care, he is going to retire after this gig, has seen everything, and now he has a bunch of players who are acting like jokes, acting like they are great because they play for Nebraska....and were recruited by Bo...it is no coincidence that they came out unprepared time and time again in big games, they thought they could roll the ball out and win. I don't expect Riley to win here in the next four years, there is no way he was hired to do so...he was hired to flip the culture of the program, and he will do this in a year or two, but it is going to be ugly this year. A ton of suspensions, benching, a ton of players quitting...this is going to be similar to Texas the last two years...the only thing that changed when Riley got hired initially was the players who were benched thought they were going to be given the starting position...the culture of us against the world still exists, and will, until Riley shows them they are not that great. And their record shows this..he is the perfect coach to lead us to some really bad seasons, clear house and then we open up the check book in 4 years.

Remember this is a team that has had a TON of talent the last 4 years, especially for the big 10, and they finished 3-24 against top 25 teams...in Bo's tenure, including many of the worst blowouts in FCS....cleaning house is necessary still...

I like how he did this. Even if he didn't want it out, he realized they said it and to deny it or claim privacy would be childish. God this is so refreshing.

It is kind of hard to read Eichorst since he is not a high profile guy, but judging by the competitive fire that seems to underlie his bland persona, it would be hard for me to believe he hired a coach for any reason other than winning. After a new staff came in with new and presumably harsher rules they actually apply, in eight months there have been a few guys who moved on, two dismissals, and 5 guys suspended for one game. I'm not sure I am ready to get out on the ledge with the Texas folks just yet.
