Assistant Coaches

Just watched McKeweon's PC wrap video (yeah, I know you guys love him). He mentioned that the rumor is that MJ has asked for a very "lengthy and expensive contract." I hope he stays but I wonder if he might overplay his hand.
Don't get cheap now, pay him, keep him here

This could be Mickeys way of saying he really wanted to stay while really wanting to leave - by asking for an impossible contract

(No idea of the above contract request is true)

Pay Mickey the 1 million plus.…he’s earned it.
That's only part of it. Rhule needs to want him and have a spot for him. We already had Solich being "encouraged" to keep Osborne's aging staff and it being "suggested" Bo ought to keep Shawn Watson. I really hope Alberts and/or Osborne don't pressure Rhule to retain Joseph if he doesn't want him.

MJ is in a great spot. Ask for the stars, the worst they can say is no or counter.

Either way, he is still getting paid next year and if he wants, will end up at another school.

I didn’t go out on too much of a limb saying Nebraska wasn’t going to have a pair of $2 million coordinators in the new regime and it’s certainly not looking like it even with this pay pool.

However we could have one of the flatter hierarchies if we end up with four guys at a million plus. OC/DC/Mickey/Robinson

It’s a personal attack to observe somebody’s weight? He’s fat (looks like he’s lost weight though)

And there is tons of video of Rhule spitting on himself on the sidelines. He’s even acknowledged it and joked about it. It’s a thing and has been for years

I think it’s super gross
Yes, calling someone a fat slob is the definition of a personal attack, especially when the conversation should be about whether or not he can do a job. Did I really have to explain that or are you just being difficult on purpose? Nevermind, don't answer that.

And people were saying Trev was cheap. Lol
He may be more desperate than he is cheap. Rhule’s contract is extremely coach friendly which suggests some signs of desperation from the AD office. We're stuck with Rhule for 5+ years no matter how poor or well he does.

Rhule is not a fat slob, but does have my morphotype. It’s easy for us to look schlubby. But he cleaned up quite nice for the presser. Very professional. Not blotchy.

If we have two d line coaches you have to lose a coach somewhere else. I hope we get robinson but im doubting it because of that, but who knows. Where do you cut from?

I love how this board sweats over coach pay like it’s coming out of their beer budget... but now we're all "pay Mickey anything he wants!" If he has a good head coach opportunity that is $1M+ then he should take it. WR coaches don't make that much.

Kong prefers a coach that pisses his pants

Idk either but there's still some smoke associated with Robinson. One can only hope!

The language in Matt's NFL contract prohibits him for working for less than market rate, Nebraska had to pay Rhule market rate and work out an agreement with the Panthers, I'm sure Trev was thinking he could get Matt for 6 to 7M a year and have the Panthers pay the bulk of the salary. The NFL has pretty damn good attorneys. Trev and Ted Carter got together after initial talks broke down and put together some extra money, which is why Matt is actually set to be paid over $10M a year over the next 8 years. Panthers will pay 4.5, 3.5, 2.5, 1.5M over the next four years and Nebraska will carry more of the salary until the NFL contract runs out. Trev wasn't being cheap and Matt didn't not want the job. It was just lawyers getting in the way and Ted Carter and Trev stepping up to get their guy. This is actually pretty similar to Trev hiring Dean Blais at Omaha. I believe he offered the job to him 4 or 5 times before finally getting a deal done. Shows Trev's ability and savvy to be able to get a deal done. Look around current contracts. They are all 7 to 10 year deals now. Mel Tucker, Brian Kelly, Lincoln Riley, Luke Fickell, Matt Rhule. Just the state of the coaching job market right now.

We're definitely paying Rhule like he's a Lincoln Riley type of hire, but is he a Lincoln Riley type of coach? And Mel Tucker was an absolute shit contract, that's a pretty bad example.

Well you think we would have learned after Frost that you don't want to extend contract risk past 3 years, but apparently not.
I don't like the long term contracts either BUT you're forced to either pay the market rate or roll the dice again with a lesser experienced coach or a washed up coach that doesn't have that kind of market clout. I think after all the recent coaching disasters, Nebraska had to try for a higher probability coach this time that had market clout.

Good luck finding a top tier coach who is willing to sign a three year contract. Maybe you should become an Ole Miss fan, State law limits them to giving contracts no longer than four years.
It's basic risk analysis. I didn't say 3 year contract, I said 3 years of contract risk. There's a difference. You want to keep a coach for at least 3 years in most cases, so those first 3 years are fairly risk free. Okay that's well and good. But you have 5 remaining years on the contract, and then when you add on top of that the contract is heavily backloaded, that creates a ton of extra risk. Those 5 remaining years consists of a lot of unnecessary contract risk.

Trev talked about this today, he said "We are moving towards a Power 2" It's time to shit or get off the pot if you want to be a contender in the new college football world of B1G SEC dominance. Michigan, OSU, PSU, ILL, MSU, WIS, and NU are all circling the wagons and ready to compete for playoff spots when divisions end. That's why we hired Rhule and UW went with Fickell over their golden boy Leonhard.

Iowa, Minnesota, Northwestern, IU, Purdue, MD and Rutgers are gonna end up being bottom feeders if they dont commit. Academic standards at N'Western, Purdue, and U of M are gonna kill them. Ferentz's stubborness to change is gonna kill Iowa. IU is a joke. Rutgers and Maryland are in fertile recruiting spots but they are gonna have to really get going with NIL. The parity in college football is ending. It's back to the good old days. Hopefully NU can ascend with the changing winds.
