Softball Jordy Bahl named Top 10 finalist for Player of the Year

Press release from Nebraska Athletics:

Nebraska softball pitcher and utility player Jordyn Bahl was named a Top 10 finalist for the USA Softball/ESPN Collegiate Player of the Year, the organization announced on Wednesday. This is the third time Bahl has been named a top-10 finalist for the award, as she was on the list in both 2022 and 2023 while at Oklahoma.

Bahl is one of three Big Ten players that made the top-10 list – Oregon’s Lyndsey Grein and UCLA’s Jordan Woolery are also finalists.

The Papillion, Neb., native continues to rack up the accolades, as she was named both the Big Ten Player of the Year and the Big Ten Pitcher of the Year. She was the first player in the conference's history to earn both of those awards in the same season. She also was a member of the All-Big Ten first team. Bahl has also been a two-time national player of the week this spring, and she has won six Big Ten weekly awards, including five pitcher-of-the-week honors and one player-of-the-week award.

Bahl is the first Husker in school history to record 15 doubles and 15 home runs in the same season. She also became the sixth Husker to record 50+ runs, hits and RBIs in a season.

At the plate, the junior has notched 61 runs, 71 hits, 59 RBIs, 16 doubles, 2 triples and 19 homers on a .458 batting average. She has only struck out 14 times and has a slugging percentage of .955 and an on-base percentage of .540.

In the circle, Bahl has an ERA of 1.57 and a record of 23-6 across 174.1 innings pitched. She has struck out 254 batters and allowed only 39 earned runs.

The top three finalists for the Collegiate Player of the Year will be named on May 19, and the winner will be named before the Women’s College World Series.

UPDATED 5/17: 25% Of The Season Left

OK, technically, it's slightly more than 25% because the SDSU game was canceled. But there are 14 games left in the regular season. Can this team still make it a successful season? I think we can all agree the only way to do so is to make a regional. That shouldn't be a high bar for a team that started the year in the top 25. There are two paths:

1. Win the conference tournament. The new, 12-team format should make it even more of a home field advantage for Nebraska because the game times will be set in advance at the start of the week. And, if the Big Ten is smart, it will schedule Nebraska's two midweek games in the evening to maximize attendance. Qualifying for the tournament is a prerequisite to winning it, however, and there is work to be done with the current position a three-way tie for 12th. Winning every remaining series 2-1 (or averaging out to that) will put the final record at 15-15 which should comfortably make the field. Anything better than that is gravy. All remaining Big Ten opponents are currently 10th or worse in the standings, and the two road series are against the 15th and 16th place teams. Not making the tournament would be huge failure.

2. Go on a serious tear and get an at-large bid. I'm no RPI expert but I think it's possible. A sub-50 RPI would probably be required, which means improving it 30-ish points over five weeks. The schedule sets up OK for it. The two series against the worst RPI teams remaining, Maryland and Purdue (both 140+), are on the road. All other games are at home against teams with 40-80 RPIs. Pulling it off will probably require winning 11+ of the 14--including beating K-State--and then winning 2-3 games in Omaha. But it might just be enough.

It starts tomorrow. Winning the Terps series is critical.

Football Husker Games scrimmage roster/event info

Here's the roster for today's scrimmage, as well as which players will compete in which events.

There are some position changes. Not sure if everyone's new position is official or if it's just to help the team get through the scrimmage:

Rowdy Bauer: from RB to DB (Rhule announced this move last week)
Landen Davidson: from OL to DL
Ian Flynt: from TE to DL
Connor Schutt: from Jack LB to DL
Rahmir Stewart: he's listed here as a DB but Rob Dvoracek confirmed he's now an ILB
Vince Genatone: from LB to RB
Trent Uhlir: from RB to LB

No reason we can't start 4-0 ...

Most favorable Husker schedule in a LONG time ... get out of the gates healthy and get the Wolverines at home in what could be the biggest game of Rhule's tenure ... pull that off and the sky is the limit ... but, lose to Cincy and it won't matter.

Feel good about this group though - especially moving the rock - that should carry us through early given Raiola's experience and Holgorsen's ability as a play caller ...

defensive potential is HIGH IMO ... but the floor could be ugly - need to see the DL thrive under the new AC
