Post- Game Thoughts

So I’m in Chicago, headed to a concert and didn’t get to watch the game as close as I would have liked. But did see it. What were your observations?

To me it was mostly good stuff. Only real issues I noticed were Hartzog got picked on a little and Fidone seemed to struggle both blocking and passing. Also kicking game is still probably a question. But the most complete game we’ve had in a while.

Post game thoughts

Good:
Raiola did great. It's UTEP and he wasn't pressured but he played lights out. At least 3 of his incompletions were throw aways and drops.
Neyor - despite a bad drop in the end zone it's nice to see a real athlete at Wideout again
Oline did great. Will find out more next week.
RBs did their job. Nice shake and bake from Rahmir and Emmit. Dowdell looked really good until the fumble.
It's great to have enough depth to where we can sit those that turn the ball over. Last year we just didn't have the depth to do it. We didn't see Dowdell after the fumble.
Defensive line absolutely owned their OL particularly their left tackle.
DBs played pretty good. We'll find out about them next week.
7 points - that's a pretty good total against anyone for the defense
No interceptions
Harberg looked really solid in as a backup
We got a lot of time for the backups.
+1 in turnover battle!!!

Opportunities:
End of the half clock mgmt was head-scratching again. It worked out but that could hurt us again this year.
Would love to get the Tight Ends more involved.
Satt's playcalling was questionable. The first 10 or so scripted plays were great. We threw on first down too much considering we were running at will. Why is Harberg throwing the end zone fade? It didn't matter today but some adjustments need to be made IMO.

Unnoticed observation

Dylan looked great. GREAT. Especially for a true freshman. Normally, even in the best case scenario, coaches try to get their young players more reps early in the year. Today, we saw a true freshman qb sit for part of the 3rd and all the 4th quarter so that last years best qb could get some time. If that isn’t confidence from the coaches in Dylan then I don’t know what is. If Rhule is more concerned about protecting Dylan like he’s a veteran than he is with getting him game ready….let’s go. I’m all in on the Rhule aid.

How Long Will Dante Dowdell be in the Doghouse?

Based on the overall RB chatter leading up to the first game, I doubt many thought Dowdell would get the majority of the 1st quarter carries. He did, and was running the ball well, including our first TD of the season and the 12 yard run fumbled on.

When he got the second carry of the game, I thoughht "someone must have fumbled in practice leading up to the game," opening the door for Dante. Rhule talked about all 4 RB's being rather equal, but said things would separate as the season went on. Rhule has also talked so much about protecting the ball and a player getting yanked if he turned it over.

I'm pretty sure DD didn't return to the game after his fumble. I feel for him and hope he gets another crack at it, but you just can turn it over, especially after last year's fumble-mania.

Raiola, just prior to kickoff

Ran by himself down to SW stadium and pumped up the crowd. I felt it told me a few things...

One, he was ready to go in so many ways as we have heard.
Two, it told me he loves this place and of course that validates why he's here.
Three, he knows the fans love him and wasn't afraid to soak it in some.
Four, he knows we as a fanbase are hungry and he wants us to know things are changing around here.
Five, he was having fun.

And he played like it

Why does the future look bright for NU?

Raiola, Neyor, Banks, Dowdell, Mazzccua are the best players in this offense. They all have one thing in common. Rather than half-assed, lazy and ineffective recruiters who make excuses, this staff goes and gets players where they are needed.

Now, if we can just keep this staff around for a few years...and write the $$ checks it takes to enable them,

CU Game

Never forget.....Football remains a game of harsh truths. You cant fake it. The counterfeit fraud that is Deion Sanders and the Colorado Buffalos will be exposed and outed in the most humiliating way. Why? Because football remains a game of sacrifice and substance. Football's eternal truths have not changed.

Remember when the high powered 1994 Kordell Steward led Buffs came into Lincoln.....with Westbrook, Salaam, Rae Carruth (murder) and Furina ......and Charlie told the Blackshirt...."Kordell doesn't like getting hit". Its really no different except CU had a very good defense back then......they DO NOT have one now!

we don't need any more analysis of this game. We will inflict our will and then the circus can limp back to Boulder........ See you there.....

Opposing team DPI

I’ve discussed this at length with several people this past off-season. By having the most accurate pro-style passer since Joe Ganz for the next 3 years expect Nebraska to be on the winning side of a lot of DPIs.

DR can put the ball where he wants it and I noticed a lot of the secondary guys don’t expect some of those throws to be where they are or don’t expect the ball to be throw at all.

It’s statistically factual that the most accurate QBs generate the most DPI in football and it’ll be nice to see that A LOT more going forward like we did yesterday.
