Hire a coach, please Trev!?!

I see lots of thoughts, ideas, inside info, etc., but I wanted to put some thoughts down on why a new coach hasn't been named yet, including my mindset "lifecycle"...
  1. Oh, man, I am tired of all of the speculation
    • I could ignore it, but can you actually do that...can I actually do that?
  2. Don't we need to get a new coach named so we can start building momentum for next year, which is the foundation for the future?
  3. If not soon, doesn't it become more or increasingly complex for next year?
  4. Recruits are saying that Mickey is staying
  5. But...Mickey is a potential candidate for the ASU job?
  6. What is the reality?
  7. What if the new coach is currently coaching another team?
    • It wouldn't be fair or cool for a head coach at another school to accept another job mid-season
  8. If it's going to be Mickey, wouldn't that have been announced already? Yes, most likely
  9. Maybe someone has already been hired, and the current staff already knows? At least, a few key people?
  10. If that's the case, leaks would almost certainly be occurring
  11. I do wish Trev would publicly state which staff members will be retained for certain, but can he really do that?
  12. How would the other coaches feel about the uncertainty?
At the end of the day, it would be great to have a coach named, but there are obvious reasons why one hasn't been named. Perhaps Trev has his guy, and Mickey has, at least, some knowledge of it? While it (having a coach hired and named) would help with recruiting, if Mickey will indeed be part of the coaching staff next year, that should satisfy a key recruiting aspect. I don't see a new coach being named until the end of the regular season...until after the Iowa game. If the new coach is coaching in a conference championship game, they won't be named until after the first weekend in December.

I guess I will just sit back and try and enjoy Nebraska football until then. GBR!

Ruhle articles

A couple of interesting reads. Since he seems to be at least a somewhat realistic candidate, I thought it might be a good idea to read up on him. The article on his recruiting and development philosophies is very interesting. Seems to fit what Trev said he’s looking for.

As a fan base we've generally been wrong so many times before....

Let's try something here....

Frank S = Generally fans thought he had to go. Seems he was the best we have had since TO.

Callahan = Generally fans thought he was the guy. Seems like he wasn't very good.

Bo = Generally people felt we could do better than 9 wins. We can't do better it seems.

Riley = Generally people thought he was good...ok...no they didn't. He sucked.

Scott F = Universally thought of as a HR hire. He sucked balls.

MJ = Generally thought of as not the guy. Odds are HE IS THEY GUY. Hahaha.

Maybe Trev should do the exact opposite of what the fans thinks. I kid I kid.

I really hope it is not MJ. Great guy, great to have on staff but we need better. Maybe he is the best we can get tho...

I pray it's Aranda, Rhule or Whittingham. Probably not so...

Do like ole Dble E....Get drunk tonight young and old gents....

Football Carpenter: Nebraska gets "too comfortable," can't get out of own way

Nebraska captain Caleb Tannor said one of the biggest differences in today's 20-13 loss was Nebraska "got too comfortable" after the first half.

That answer blew me away. Losing has been injected into the players' veins for the last five seasons, but a lead of just 10-0 at halftime still led to complacency and letting their foot off the gas?

Mind boggling. And there's plenty more mind boggling stuff in my column from a game that Nebraska lost in the third quarter.

Chubba or Smothers

If we learned anything from Taylor Martinez and his performance when he's hurt, I don't want to run the risk of keeping Thompson on the field, especially after these God awful throws we've seen this season. Purdy did himself no favors here, and Smothers has the versatility we needed from Thompson.

I'd start Smothers if I was Whipple and I would bench whoever played LT.

Casey Thompson on Mickey

I watched Casey's interview and when someone asked about MJ he was rather effusive in his comments. He said that Mikey was well organized, detail-oriented, set high standards of performance for everyone, and was on top of things like class attendance, meals, being late to meetings, and other things that had punishments associated with them and Mikey did dish out the punishments. Casey said MJ worked well with the other coaches and coordinators and he will get involved with individual player performance. MJ has them focused on one game at a time and winning the West. Mickey also said MJ was a great recruiter of talent. Of course, I don't think any player, no matter how he felt would stand up there and criticize a coach, but his comments seemed very genuine to me. If Casey is right in his judgment, it sure covers a lot of points a HC should do.

Would you consider

hiring Joseph on a 3 year contract with no buy out. Have the contract money be somewhat on the low side with written incentives for a year 4 and or 5.
As an example pay MJ 3.5 million annually for year one. Take the savings off of SF contract (2 Million) and put that into the coaches pool of money, allowing MJ to go get better qualified assistants. Maybe add a few more dollars to the 2 million so MJ can really get the best of the best. Put a mark on the wall of 6 wins in 2023 and 7 in 2024. Show improvement and competitiveness in all games. Renegotiate the contract after year 2. We should know what the new BigT looks like after 2024.

Other incentives like winning the west, going to a New Years 6 Bowl or a national title could remain, knowing they are highly unlikely.

Downside is players want to know who their coach is. Also if MJ is not the guy we start over again.

I like MJ as a recruiter, I like how he is changing how we practice and no more touch football at practice, but I am not sure how he is going to be as the head man.
