Football Some semi-random Thursday thoughts: Rhule is running the Baylor playbook right now

This is something I was thinking about last night and this afternoon after hearing Matt Rhule say at his presser yesterday, “Ed's doing what we’ve always done.”

All of this impressive stuff we are seeing from Rhule and the coaching staff? The work ethic, some of the new implementations in the program, etc?

They’re pretty much running the Baylor playbook.

I went back and read @GeoffExstrom's long form feature from December – the inside look at how Rhule built his program at Baylor (LINK) – and we’re seeing a lot of the same things. That story was published almost two full months ago, so it's interesting to take a look back and see that a lot of it has unfolded the same way.

– Rhule being a CEO type who oversees everything in the program and intervenes when he deems it necessary

– Top objectives are to create a family atmosphere within the program and a player-led organization (like Terrance Knighton said on Monday)

– Creating events to help teammates bond with each other (literally bonding over food)

– Prioritization of Texas and building relationships there

– Even the ping pong tables for God’s sake!

There’s more in there, but that’s a handful. It’s not overall surprising, I guess, but is worth taking note of – especially because it's predictive of what’s about to come.

Having 103 scholarship players right now? On top of some of the things Rhule talked about yesterday (like there being some “rules” they can take advantage of to get that number down to 85), I don’t think anyone should truly be worried about that roster getting cut down after reading this excerpt from Geoff's story:

Rhule was a different beast on the field. He wasn’t afraid to coach players hard, but that first offseason in Waco was rough. Rhule never ran anyone out from the previous roster, but he made the winter workouts brutal enough to weed out those who couldn’t cut it.

“He’ll rip you in front of the team. He’ll put you through the ringer. He’s ripping coaches. He’s holding everyone to that same standard and he’s letting you know,” Blackmar said. “Then, it’s like you can sit down and have a regular conversation with him 10 minutes later and it’s like it never happened. He’ll even tell you, ‘Well, I said this because I want to invoke this type of reaction, or I said this because I want the guy behind you who’s three years younger than you to take notice.’”

OT: Ringworm advice

UPDATED 2/5/23: thanks for the help and advice. I happened to get her in a derm clinic when it just closed, great people. Doc instantly said staph infection and urgent care was dumb, that the antifungal was making it worse even if it started as ringworm. Arm is finally healing, she was cleared to wrestle this weekend got third at districts, now time for regionals.

One kid is a wrestler and has what appears to be bad ringworm on her forearm. Doc says ringworm but it's gotten worse. We have antifungal cream, pills and tea tree oil.

Any other recommendations?

District tourney starts Friday.

I'd like to upload a pic of the fungi but too dumb to know how.

TIA

Will Rivals Also Compile 2023 Transfer Team/Player Class Ranking?

I noticed 24/7 sports has their list of rankings of teams who did the best to worst in the transfer portal.

Will rivals do the same thing or is it out there and I just don’t know where to find it?

NU is 16th highest rated transfer portal class but they only list 3 4 stars or above in that transfer portal where I think originally rivals it’s five or six 4-5 stars now

2005 - Texas Tech

Thinking of all the heartbreaking losses that Nebraska's endured over the last 20 years or so and this one doesn't get discussed enough.

LeKevin Smith with the interception deep in Nebraska territory - only has to fall down and the game's over - instead he gets crushed by an o-lineman and fumbles the ball - Tech recovers.

Two plays later - Tech scores on a 4th down touchdown pass - IIRC Nebraska's DB - I want to say Blake Tiedtke was in position to make a play on the ball but had it wrestled away by the Tech receiver.

A shame that Callahan let Cosgrove derail his tenure at Nebraska. Things were absolutely trending in a positive direction.

Football Matt Rhule on Zavier Betts, Arik Gilbert and bonds built in the cafeteria

Good stuff from Matt Rhule today on two guys with troubled pasts — WR Zavier Betts and TE Arik Gilbert. Also, more good stuff from Rhule on how he thinks the cafeteria is a good spot to build team bonds.

Football Blackshirt Breakdowns: 2023 class

@Steve Marik and @Foremanjay5655 have dug into the game film for 20 of the Huskers' 39 scholarship additions this offseason in their Blackshirt Breakdown series.

The following is a one-stop shop for all of those breakdowns. This is my favorite thing we've implemented on the site, so I encourage you to check these out if you haven't yet!

Eagles Lineman

Looks like the eagles will be down a starter on their offensive line. Probably best that they have time to adjust, but they definitely don't need the distraction.

Why does the timing on these stories always seem to be so perfect?
