Football Garret McGuire leaning on lifetime of football knowledge, impactful mentors

Garret McGuire turned 24 last week. His official coaching résumé consists of 2 years as an NFL assistant.

But a life spent embedded in the game has bred confidence in himself and others that the baby-faced Nebraska WR coach is ready for this job:

why not just $$$NIL$$$ all the in state scholarship guys and take em off scholly?

In state tuition is less and I'm sure in state players would have an advantage over other guys for local NIL deals (all other things being equal, i get that the qb's get more)

Take them all off of scholarship, turn them into preferred walk-ons and get them all an NIL deal to make up the difference (and then some, to make up for any other losses that come with losing the scholly, plus an honorarium for them giving up the status and maybe a few more bucks for walking around money.....and what the hell, here's twenty more, get a haircut or a milkshake or something)

That gets us down to the 85 scholarships.

I realize this probably not feasible, but in the wild wild west of today's college football, might be able to get away with it once before they make a rule against it.
Of course the school couldn't initiate this, the players would have to renounce their scholly after signing a whopper of an NIL contract.

I suppose Alabama would have already done this if it was in any way possible.

1 week away

From the best time of year, opening day of college baseball!

@la jolla hskr you going to the opening series?

I'm pumped about the potential of this team. Bolt and crew did work in the off-season.

So predictions:
  • Top 3 B1G finish
  • 2-seed regional (I so want to predict regional host but I can't)
  • Efry hits over .200 with multiple HRs
  • Caron leads the B1G in throwing out runners
  • Starters combine for a <4.00 era
  • We sweep Creighton
  • 6 Huskers make all B1G team
  • Bolt B1G COY or runner up
  • The season will go by way to fast and I'll be sad when it ends

LFG!

Returning production

I would think #4 isn't a bad thing. I'm sure several who returned will be passed by better talent(at least one would hope), but the continuity with improved competition should be a positive.

Basketball WBB FINAL: Illinois 72, Nebraska 64

Back at PBA as we're about 20 minutes out from Nebraska (14-9, 6-6) vs. Illinois (18-6, 8-5). The Huskers won 78-66 on Monday against Northwestern while the Illini are coming off a 69-62 win over Minnesota. Tough task ahead for NU as Illinois sits 27th in both WBB polls.

More impressively, Illinois owns a win over No. 5 Iowa on New Year's Day. The Hawkeyes are facing No. 2 Indiana on BTN right now in one of biggest games of the WBB season so far.

Your starters for both teams:

Jaz Shelley (12.5 PPG)
Sam Haiby (10.2)
Maddie Krull (5.6)
Issie Bourne (11.6)
Alexis Markowski (12.1)

Genesis Bryant (15.3)
Makira Cook (17.8)
Adalia McKenzie (14.3)
Brynn Shoup-Hill (6.5)
Kendall Bostic (10.5)

SIAP: Aeryn Hampton Top 7

"Hampton named Michigan, Nebraska, Oregon, Texas, Oklahoma, LSU and Alabama as his top schools."

Hate to say it but we aren't on the same success level as his other choices... Thank you Coach Rhule for your connections!!

Site Stuff Any of our award-winning subscribers have some offseason story ideas?

Oh, hey there. How's everyone doing? Oh, you're doing great? Yeah, me too!

OK now that small talk is out of the way:

We're about to be hit the really scary doldrums of the offseason where football discussions, news and stories from Feb. 2 to mid-March (after the Feb. 1 signing day until the start of spring ball) will be super thin. I already have a good set of story ideas saved in the bank for long-form, human-interest features and columns for my staff and I to pursue over the next 4-6 weeks. But I wanted to offer up the opportunity for you guys and gals to come in here with any ideas y'all might have.

What are some stories you think would be good for us to pursue? What are some topics you've been curious about or think would make for good feature stories? They don't have to be limited to just football. They can be FB, VB, MBB, WBB, baseball, etc. ... We may not be able to pursue all of them, but I'd love to get your thoughts and ideas, so let 'em fly either in a reply here, a DM or an email to me (insidenebraskarivals@gmail.com)

Remember, there are no bad ideas (except for the bad ones 😉)
