OT ot: Olympic wrestler finally makes the pinnacle of the sport

I immediately shared this article with our wrestling coach as I know he sometimes struggles to motivate his athletes.

Olympic gold medal winner finally gets the call to the big leagues

These are some of the more inspirational quotes in the article:

*"I didn't want to end my career on that note," Mensah-Stock said. "So I did another world championships, I wiped the floor with everybody, and I was like, 'Man, this is not fun anymore. I need a change."

"I love watching the athletes just in the ring, just going what they do best,"

Hopefully this will inspire our youth!

Football Nebraska Names New NIL Director

From Nebraska Athletics Communications press release:

Nebraska Athletics announced today that it has hired an in-house director of Name, Image and Likeness (NIL) and extended its partnership with Altius Sports Partners (ASP), a trusted advisor to top-tier collegiate athletics programs and sports properties, to best support student-athletes pursuing NIL opportunities.

NU named Jonathan Bateman as Assistant Athletic Director – NIL Strategy and Governance. Bateman has been with the Huskers since 2011 and most recently served as the Associate Director of Compliance.

In this new role, Bateman will manage day-to-day NIL operations for Nebraska Athletics and serve as the primary liaison for all NIL and governance operations.

"I'm thankful to Trev Alberts for the opportunity and excited to continue working with Nebraska student-athletes, staff, and stakeholders in the evolving NIL space. As college athletics continues to undergo substantial change, it's important that we have the pulse on all aspects of the landscape. It's our goal that the University of Nebraska-Lincoln will continue to play a leading role in the next iteration of college athletics," said Bateman.

The Huskers are one of just a handful of athletic departments across the country and the first in the state to have a position dedicated to the areas of NIL and governance. The position fits within Nebraska Athletics' strategic plan of embracing and influencing the coming changes in college athletics.

In addition to hiring Bateman, Nebraska Athletics recently extended its partnership with ASP, a nationally recognized authority on the evolving collegiate athletics landscape and on helping schools optimize their NIL ecosystems to maximize opportunities for their athletes.

"It is important that we continue to proactively support our student-athletes' ability to monetize their NIL. Our commitment to current and prospective student-athletes will not change; our staff will have a clear plan and vision for success now and in the future," said Vice Chancellor, Director of Athletics Trev Alberts.

"When it comes to college sports, Nebraska is a true powerhouse. They have passionate fans, a strong history of financial success, and are a hub for sports culture. With our enhanced partnership, we're fully committed to equipping Trev, Jonathan, and the entire Husker Athletics team with the tools, knowledge, and resources they need to succeed. Together, we'll prioritize student-athlete NIL and foster collaboration at every turn. This way, we'll be able to seize every opportunity and make a huge impact on Husker Nation. This is our shared vision at ASP, and we're excited to work with such an incredible team," said Celine Mangan, Director of Business and Client Strategy at Altius Sports Partners.

Nebraska has been at the forefront of NIL since its introduction in 2021. Since then, all Nebraska student-athletes participate in NIL education through the Life Skills Husker Advantage program offering valuable content on financial literacy, assessing strengths, brand building, communication skills, entrepreneurship and maximizing career marketability. Husker student-athletes in all sports have participated in over 2,700 NIL activities since 2001. The goal is to increase that number and maximize opportunities for student-athletes.

"We are committed to working with our key stakeholders to make sure Nebraska stays at the forefront of innovation in college athletics now and for years to come," said Alberts.

Alaskan Cruise

Going on an Alaskan cruise through Royal Caribbean next May (13-20th) with stops at Skagway, Sitka, Juneau, and Victoria BC. Having never been to Alaska I was curious what suggestions for excursions and sights to see at each port you would suggest.

I'd like to charter a fishing boat at either Sitka or Skagway as well and any input on fishing at either location would be greatly appreciated. It sounds like King Salmon and halibut would be the two species we would be targeting?

Thanks and GBR!

2023 Nebraska Offense - 1st Half Spring Game - Option & RPOs - Part Deux

Part Deux of the 1st half of the spring game, focusing on the option and RPO game.

As always, a disclaimer, I may be wrong on some of this, and likely am on several aspects, especially the passing game, but it’s hard as hell to try and figure out what they’re doing without an All-22. So take that with a grade of slaw. Also, I use terminology that is familiar to me. In no way shape or form is it what they call it, or probably anywhere close. But overall, I’m pretty confident in identifying core concepts of what they did in the first half.

Option Game - Double & Triple

So all of these clips are option game, either reading one defender in the double option game, or two defenders in the triple option game. I think this and a dedicated QB run game is something that fits Haarberg really well, but Sims is also dangerous in this regards.

1st Clip goes back to the opening play. OL is blocking Belly G, but the backfield is running inverted veer. I love inverted veer. It’s not a successful play, but conceptually, It’s tough.

Next batch of clips is from the OL blocking inside zone and the QB reading 1 to 2 defenders depending on if they have a pitch phase to the option.

Now the w/ the pitch phase. 1st Clip is a penalty, but you can see it setting up w/ Sims. 2nd clip is with Haarberg and can see why he’s a dangerous runner.

This clip is also a nice example of some of the movement DC Tony White has with a dirty pirate hooker stunt.

RPOs:

Nebraska utilized a variety of RPOs in the spring game. I thought Sims did the best making those reads and throws. But they do some nice things schematically from an RPO standpoint that is difficult to defend.

This first RPO is off of the same action Nebraska started the game with, Belly G. This is one of my personal favorites. 2nd Level RPO reading BSLB movement to throw into a backside window. It’s a little hard to pick up in this case b/c of the video, but you can see the LG pulling and frontside down indicating belly g.

This RPO is off IZ action and an unbalanced 5 strong. Presents a lot of challenges. They have an arrow and some drift routes. They ran this several times in the game with little success.

Next set of RPOs is off of counter action. I think this stresses the defenses the most to get in their fits or not. 1st Clip you have a traditional read 3rd level fitters and throw some drift/glance routes. 2nd Clip is motioning to empty and reading rotation/2nd level defenders for a Q run or perimeter screen.

The next RPO is off of OZ action. It’s a pretty popular RPO utilizing a stick route and under Rhule at Baylor, they utilized this trips concept a lot. Stick by #1, and then a Slot/Fade combo by #1 & #2.

That wraps up the RPO and option section from the 1st half of the spring game. Hope you enjoyed it.
