Baseball Coverage update for May 20 (today)

The girlfriend is graduating today at Memorial Stadium, so I'll be out of commission for today's regular season finale against Purdue. I'll be back for regularly scheduled programming next week for the Big Ten Tournament in Omaha.

Speaking of, the Huskers (30-21-1, 14-9) will look to improve their seeding in the series finale against Purdue (24-28, 11-12) who was eliminated from reaching the conference tournament with Michigan State beating Indiana last night. It wasn't a good afternoon for NU yesterday as Nebraska allowed seven unanswered runs after grabbing a quick 3-0 lead after the first three and a half innings. Here's that recap from yesterday:

Nebraska will also look to break the record they tied on Friday against the Boilermakers as it was Gabe Swansen, Max Anderson and Charlie Fischer who all homered to help NU tie the program's single-season home run record with 93. With a home run Saturday, the Huskers would break the record set by the 1985 team. The series opener was a close battle for the first six innings, but Nebraska scored eight of its 10 runs in the last three innings to run away from Purdue 10-5. Here's the recap:

The Huskers have yet to announce a starting pitcher for today's series finale, but the Boilermakers will throw out LHP Jonathan Blackwell (5-5, 6.21 ERA).

So, what's at stake? Just seeding for Nebraska. Based off last night's conference results, the Huskers most likely opponent is Rutgers in the 4/5 matchup on Wednesday afternoon. Maryland locked up the conference title last night with Indiana losing. With Iowa dropping its Friday game to Northwestern, Nebraska would overtake the Hawkeyes if NU beats Purdue and Iowa loses the series against the Wildcats.

Husker T&F: Johansson, Steinforth and St. Clair win B1G Awards

Johansson, Steinforth & St. Clair win Big Ten Awards
Huskers.com
The Nebraska track and field program was well represented in the Big Ten Outdoor Championships postseason awards on Friday, which was voted on by the league's head coaches.

Axelina Johansson was named the Big Ten Women's Field Athlete of the Championships, while Till Steinforth was the Big Ten Men's Field Athlete of the Championships. Nebraska Head Coach Justin St. Clair was named the Big Ten Men's Coach of the Year after leading the Husker men to the Big Ten title last weekend in Bloomington, Ind.

Johansson, a sophomore from Hok, Sweden, was named the Big Ten Women's Field Athlete of Championships after winning the shot put with a personal best and meet record 64-1 1/4 (19.54m). Johansson's throw was a Nebraska school record and a Swedish national record. It was also the top mark in the NCAA this season, the No. 2 throw in NCAA outdoor history and the No. 2 throw in the world in 2023. Johansson swept the Big Ten indoor and outdoor shot put titles this season, and she was the NCAA indoor runner-up in March. Johansson is the Husker women's first Field Athlete of the Championships since Mara Griva in 2013.

Steinforth, the Big Ten Men's Field Athlete of the Championships, was a double champion by winning both the decathlon and long jump titles. The sophomore from Saxony-Anhalt, Germany scored a school record and Big Ten meet record 8,064 points in the decathlon to win by 278 points. Immediately after the decathlon pole vault concluded, Steinforth made his way over to the long jump pit, and on his first attempt put forth a personal-best 25-7 1/4 (7.80m), which held up through the entire competition to earn him the gold medal in that event as well. It was also the No. 9 mark in school history. Steinforth is the second Husker male in a row to win Field Athlete of the Championships at the outdoor meet, as Maxwell Otterdahl was the recipient in 2022. The Husker men have swept the Big Ten Field Athlete of the Championship awards two years in a row.

St. Clair, in his first season as Nebraska's head coach, earned his first career Big Ten Men's Coach of the Year honor after leading the Husker men to the team title with 151 points, their most at a conference meet since 2004. The Huskers had 12 Big Ten champions, including seven on the men's side. NU's seven conference champions for the men's team were the most at an outdoor conference meet since 1990.

Additionally, Michael Hoffer and Madison Lueger received Nebraska's Big Ten Sportsmanship Awards.

Basketball Update on 2023 Nebrasketball target Baye Ndongo

Baye Ndongo took to social media tonight to announce he’ll make his college decision Monday.

The Huskers are in his top five, which also includes Michigan, Rutgers, Colorado and San Diego.

Ndongo is an interesting prospect at 6-foot-10 and 218 pounds. He can move very well and I like his potential.

Here’s the story I wrote following his official visit he took during the weekend of the Purdue game:

Baseball Live Thread Game 52 FINAL: Purdue 7, Nebraska 3

We're back again for game two in the last regular season series of the year as Nebraska (30-20-1, 14-8) looks to lock up the series win today over Purdue (23-28, 10-12) after a historic Thursday night win. Last night the Huskers reached the 30-win mark for the second time in three seasons while tying the single-season home run record with three home runs. Gabe Swansen, Max Anderson and Charlie Fischer all homered to tie the record at 93 as the 2023 team achieved that mark in 18 fewer games than the record-breaking 1985 squad. Swansen and Anderson had the big swings as their home runs each counted for three runs as NU plated eight of its 10 runs in the final three innings to dispatch the Boilermakers.

And this is all without star shortstop Brice Matthews who was held out on Thursday due to back tightness. He won't be out long term and only needs rest.

Today we'll have RHP Jace Kaminska (7-3, 4.52 ERA) vs. LHP Jonathan Blackwell (5-5, 6.21 ERA) for the pitching matchup as Nebraska looks to win the series. Today's game was moved up to noon to compenstate for the incoming weather that is supposed to hit West Lafayette at the originally scheduled time of 5 p.m. Here's the full series preview:

And in case you missed it, head coach Will Bolt, Anderson and Corbin Hawkins spoke to the media before departing for West Lafayette to give an insight on the team's hot string of games:

Another top ranking for Nebraska

Hard fought and well earned

Is Carter Nelson running track? Dae'Vonn Hall a stud!

Is Carter Nelson fully competing in track this spring? He was a 7'0 high jumper last year and this year he is not even on the leader board with a 6'5 jump. Anyone know what is up? On another note, Dae'Vonn Hall is a stud athlete. He has high jumped 6'10 1/4 and run an electronic 10.62 `100 meters.,.. Wow! Great athlete!

RIP Jim Brown

One of the best ever. Before my time, but mad respect for his talent and hard nosed approach.

Serious Coaches

Under Pelini, while there were problems and deficiencies with his coaching, but I never questioned how serious he and his staff was towards competing.

When we got Riley, that all changed and we were the laid back Huskers. It's took 3 years until total destruction.

Frost was going to fix this, but he was just as laid back as Riley, if not more. He had convinced himself in 3 years at UCF that this was easy, and when he got hit in the face with reality, it all crumbled.

I really get the vibe from this staff that we once again have serious and realistic coaches, coaches who while loving the players, keep some distance as they should to maintain themselves as the adults in the room. This gives the players a sense of security and belonging that they haven't had since Pelini.

We have had 5 new HCs since 1997:

1. The players cried when TO retired.
2. The players were angry when Solich was fired.
3. The players were indifferent to happy when Callahan was fired.
4. The players were again angry when Pelini was fired.
5. The players were totally indifferent when Riley got fired.
6. The players were generally happy when Frost got fired.

Let's hope we don't have to assess how the players felt about the current coach.

Football Questions for first Friday Mailbag

Hey everyone,

I'm launching a mailbag column this Friday, which will be a weekly piece for the site going forward (assuming there are enough questions to fill a mailbag column every week).

So, if you guys have any questions regarding Nebraska football, volleyball, baseball, etc. or any recruiting questions, drop them in the replies below, direct message me or email me at zackevancarpenter@gmail.com

Really excited about this and have been looking forward to starting it for a while! In the future, I'll call for questions a day or two earlier in the week.

Note: Questions or comments regarding the site won't be answered in the column itself, but I can answer them here or in my DMs/email.
