OT: Tsunami Warning last night

Excitement here last night. Was live on-air playing my weekly show when all the lights and buzzers went off in the control room, (studio), a Tsunami Warning and evacuation order followed with our sirens wailing relentlessly. Second time I was live during a tsunami scare. Other was during the Japanese disaster in 2011.

Very different response. In 2011 we were all on edge knowing a massive quake occurred, and that we were potentially at risk. Finally at 11:53 I recieved an emergency print out calling for an evacuation. I read on-air, 90 seconds later Kodiak Police called me and asked me not to read it again until they/we had more info so as to not panic people. 15 minutes later it was downgraded to Alert.

Last night there was a 7.2 temblor down the Peninsula, and the National Weather Service sent messages out over phones calling for immediate evacuation.

Panic ensued, hundreds if not thousands of processing workers fled the waterfront in a chaotic rush, mixed with cars also evacuating, and one person is dead.

12 years ago I was reprimanded by Police to not spread panic as I read my EAS printout.
Last night this was avoidable. Panic 1. Tsunami 0.

Football Mailbag: Who makes biggest leap, top position battle, No. 1 camp storyline

Mailbag Time again! This week, wrote a bunch of words on:

• The player poised to make the biggest jump this year

• Biggest fall camp storyline

• Most intense position battle

Huskers.com Website

@Zack Carpenter I didn't see a discussion page for Fall Camp Position Breakdowns: Offensive Line so I am commenting here.

To the point that my staff and I joke that even the subtle changes, like the fact that Nebraska recently changed the look and layout of its online roster on the athletics website, must have been Rhule’s doing.

Not exactly. The N Development Office confirmed to me last week that they undergoing huskers.com website design changes. Regarding the FB page, I provided feedback to them that one can no longer sort by position or class. Also, if you wanted to print a picture of the coaches the print feature does not render properly. Finally, I had trouble logging in to the Android app and was emailed from their web support that the huskers.com Android app (and I assume Apple too) ". . . is a brand new app with a brand new company. If you wish (you can also skip creating an account by selecting “pick teams” on the home screen and going through that next screen to get to the app)."

Favorite game you ever attended in Memorial Stadium

I've been there for some good ones including the 2001 game against OU, the Alex Henery game against CU, Barry Sanders vs Ken Clark in 88 and many others, but I think my all-time favorite was the 1994 Brooke Berringer game against the Buffs. I haven't attended too many in the last several years. What is your favorite?

OT: Welcome her to The Good Life!

For those who don't know (probably most of you?), I started dating a girl in Columbus, OH pretty much right when I got the offer to be the publisher here. Had only been seeing each other for a month when I got the offer in May and then I moved out here in August. Nearly a year of being long distance, but we made it work. Special shoutout to the Big Ten for scheduling away games last year at Michigan and Purdue (both short drives from Columbus) with her and I in mind.

Anyway, we moved her out from Columbus to Lincoln a few weeks ago, and we're finally all settled. Moving sucks but what sucks less is not being in a long-distance relationship anymore and being in, ya know, one of those normal short-distance relationships you may have heard about.

Glad to have all that settled and happy to welcome Corina to The Good Life!

Fanbase Size?

I don't know the methodology behind how the size of the fanbases were calculated or how accurate it might be. This article from an Ohio State promotion claims that (not surprising) Ohio State is number 1 in terms of fanbase size. Nebraska is NOT included in this list but quite surprising schools like Oregon (relatively high in the rankings) and Syracuse are included. Lots of B1G and SEC teams (not surprising). So FWIW:

LIST OF TOP FANBASES (SUPPOSEDLY)

Recruiting Texas DB Malik Esquerra is down to five, announcing tomorrow

Texas three-star DB Malik Esquerra has cut his list to five schools and is set to announce his decision at 11:30 a.m. CT tomorrow. The 2024 safety is down to Nebraska, Texas Tech, Oregon State, TCU and Oklahoma State.

Esquerra took an official visit to Lincoln for the Huskers' first OV weekend in June. He told Ben Golan of Rivals' Red Raider Sports that, truthfully, he is down to a top two of Texas Tech and Nebraska (LINK). The Red Raiders, though, look like they are going to be the pick for Esquerra so don't expect any late morning/early afternoon fireworks from Omar Hales tomorrow.
