Football Marik: How improved pocket mobility could help Dylan Raiola this fall

Thoughts on Dylan Raiola, his pocket mobility and what improved footwork and short-area burst could do for the young QB this fall.

Three of the sacks he took in 2024 came to mind when listening to Matt Rhule talk about his QB1 last week:

Nashville watch locations

Long ways out but A bunch of us are going to Nashville over Labor Day for VB. We are staying at a hotel 2 blocks from the Bridgestone Arena downtown. Anybody know of a good and close Husker football watch place?

Also, any recs for food? There is a Martin's BBQ right across the street from our hotel that we are possibly gonna try unless better suggestions (but it looks really good). We will be there Friday afternoon through Monday late morning. TIA!

Hey Nate - what the heck??

Hey Nate,
in your 'conversations with Clouse' from yesterday, you'd written:

"The back end of the defense was being asked to do things that didn't always make sense last year. Guys like Gifford took the brunt of the criticism even though he was doing what he was told and often put in situations that were "no-win" at best."

the context here is that we had two coaches with non-complimentary schemes.
is this a fairly common/accepted opinion held by several/many in the know?
is this just your take?

i find this an amazing situation for us to have operational in our schemes. how the hell is it possible? this is disturbing to me.
guess i'd rather think our poor play was the result of missed assignments or just extraordinary effort by the enemy team - with more talent or desire.
to have it be a result of coaches building into the equation incompatible approaches is something else entirely. how the hell can that happen and why wouldn't HCMR notice this and correct it in like, 2 plays?

if you prefer to keep Sunday conversations in the Sunday conversations thread, then i'll wait for your reply this weekend. but dayum. that is nuts. but then, often our play was nuts - so . . .
@Nate Clouse
GBR!!!

Baseball Swansen vs Frost

Seemingly a lot of people been pining for Swansen to come back in the lineup every day and for Frost to sit (not as much here, but elsewhere).

Frost's overall average is not great (but OBP is still respectable...4th on the team at .378) and oh by the way, he's tied for the team lead (with Carey) with 5 homers...hasn't committed an error and 2/2 on stolen bases. He's 2nd on the team in walks as well.

But he gets slack mainly because he started out the season 0 for freaking 16.

Since then he's only been one of the best hitters on the team...kinda high K numbers sure, but everything else is great:
.300 AVG, .444 OBP, .620 SLG, 5 HR, 1 2B, 14 RBI, 10 BB, 3 HBP, 17 Ks

Frost is actually having a pretty decent year since his early drought.

He needs to be in the lineup EVERY SINGLE DAY (In an offense that's anemic, he's been way better than Swansen)

Swansen's season OBP .225 :( 2 HR Same number of ABs (66)

Take out Vanderbilt...
.145 average, .194 OBP, 1 HR, 3 BB (62 ABs)

Let's not hear any more comments about how we're "done with Frost" or how Gabe should be in the lineup. The only reason Gabe should be in RF over Frost is if we're playing UNO....even then maybe not.

Cade Povich first outing for Orioles

Cade Povich started first season game for the Orioles pitch 4.1 innings gave up 5 hits and 3 earned runs striking out 8 and walked 2 in a 8 to 5 win over Boston. Did not get the win, but threw 94 pitches, looked great again most batters, does have a good strike out pitch, threw mostly 93 to 95 mph with his fastball. Needs to get his pitch count down, but was still happy with his outing.

Recruiting Four-star 2027 QB Trae Taylor reacts to latest Nebraska visit…

Taylor just wrapped up a two-day visit to Nebraska. The elite quarterback prospect told me what stood out to him about this visit.

“Man it was just great,” Taylor said. “What stood out to me 1) their sports broadcasting program is amazing. 2) Coach Dana and Thomas have great personalities and are fun to be around 3) Nebraska and the state shows nothing but love. Everyone in that building wants me there. It was just a great trip.”

Now that the new offense is fully taking shape under Dana Holgorsen, Taylor reflected on how the offense fits his game.

“Their offense fits me perfectly actually,” Taylor said. “Love that they go under center some as well. It’s definitely a pro style offense that I’m looking for.”

I haven’t quite reached FutureCast territory yet but the Huskers are right there at the top of his schools. At this point this feels like a two-team race between Nebraska and LSU with Alabama running a distant third. Taylor wants to make his commitment in June so we are talking about a potential big domino early on.

Players with the most to prove

Curious what everyone thinks about which players have the most to prove this season. I feel it's Nwaneri, Corcoran, Jeudy, Haarberg, and Prochazka only because of his health. I'm not too worried about the RB, WR, DB and LB groups and the QB group has an able back up in Gramstad who knows the offense and is capable of running it, maybe not to the level of Raiola but well enough in an emergency. I realize there many other players that really need to show they have a fire in their bellies enough to make us a happy lot this year. jmo

Recruiting Priority IOL target Ryan Miret locks in return official visit

2026 Miami (Fla.) Southridge three-star interior offensive lineman Ryan Miret visited Nebraska late last week, his first trip up to Lincoln since the Huskers offered in January. Miret has emerged as a top target for Donovan Raiola, a heavyweight state champion wrestler who can play guard or center.

He's now scheduled an official visit to return to Nebraska June 6. Ole Miss will get him on campus for an OV June 13 and Miami will get him the following week, June 20th, for an OV. Hurricanes seen as the favorite, but Nebraska closed the gap with a strong first impression last week.
