DirecTV and Dish Network Merging

DirecTV announced Monday it is buying rival Dish Network, ending multiple decades of on-and-off again talks about the satellite services merging.

The companies have struggled to retain subscribers in the streaming era. As platforms like Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Prime and YouTube have gained traction, peeling millions of subscribers away from pay TV with lower price tags and on-demand content, DirecTV and Dish have found it increasingly difficult to justify rising subscription costs, worsening already dramatic cord-cutting.

Under the deal, DirecTV will pay Dish's owner, EchoStar, just $1 for Dish in exchange for assuming its billions of dollars in debt.

Private equity firm TPG, meanwhile, will acquire AT&T's remaining 70% stake in DirecTV. The move comes nine years after AT&T purchased the company in 2015 only to sell a 30% stake to TPG in 2021.

The deal still hinges on Dish bondholders agreeing on net debt lower than $1.56 billion. Bondholders can accept a lower percentage, take a slightly higher percentage today, or wait it out, which risks Dish ending up in bankruptcy.

Dish currently has a $2 billion debt maturity coming up on November 23. To secure funding through a shared revenue stream, TPG and DirecTV will provide Dish with a $10 billion loan that will allow the company to pay off its maturity on November 24.

The newly merged DirecTV-Dish entity will continue to support the Dish brand for the foreseeable future, the DirecTV spokesperson said. DirecTV does not currently have plans to make changes to the existing Dish or Sling TV brands, meaning that current Dish customers should not be concerned about being forced over to DirecTV.

If they combine, the new service would have about 20 million subscribers with DirecTV accounting for over 11 million of that number. Yet this figure pales compared to DirecTV's 20.3 million peak TV subscriber base in 2015 when AT&T bought a majority stake in the company.

Pre-game drills vs Purdue

I must have missed this, but apparently Rhule had the guys doing "Oklahoma drills" and drilling each other. Heard a few people say they've never seen a team go so physical before a game in their life.

Apparently, Rhule thought they were asleep and he was upset about the narrative after the Illinois game from critics about them being soft. Rhule also got the personal foul call for being the guy "sticking up for Nebraska." I love the edge from Rhule and getting after people. Think he knows they're on the verge of turning a corner and does not want negativity, officiating, or a lackadaisical effort derailing the season. A+ effort from coach Rhule to avoid a catastrophe.

How are officials graded?

With so many bad calls like the OPI on Fidone on the rub route that had the TD called back, I was wondering what happens when coaches send those calls into the B1G? Are they penalized or fined or sent down to the minors etc for repeated bad calls? Is there a meeting with all officials where their calls are QA? Seems like this year has been particularly bad

Another prediction for rest of season thread!

Glad we got the win yesterday. We were clearly the better team and should have won by more. Kudos to the defense and to EJ who really energized the running game.

But this is a bad Purdue team and we should have won going away from the get go. And our field goal kicking is the worst I have ever seen. And our defense, though it played well against an awful offense yesterday, still allows too many long drives that eat clock and keep the ball away from our offense. Our blitzes were also predictable and ineffective.

So what will the rest of our season look like? I see us finishing 4-8 at best with our only possible win being UCLA. Every other team on our remaining schedule looks to be a better overall team than we are.

We have a very mediocre offensive line and a horrible kicking game. We have coaches who can’t identify the proper running back to play.

Going to be another disappointing year I fear. I hate this. Hate hate hate. I sure hope I am wrong. Maybe some of you can convince me otherwise
