New head coach

I think the biggest challenge Trev faces in recruiting a new HC, assuming he doesn't want MJ, is convincing a coach to come to NU. Alberts has to get a coach with a proven track record of turning a program around, player development, and of course winning. The top candidates that keep floating around by pundits are the coaches from Baylor, Iowa State, and Kansas. Other than coaching in the BIG and possibly great money, why would any of those coaches want to come to DONU? I think the downside is a lot greater than the upside. If Joseph leaves there is a good chance a lot of key players go into the portal. This leaves the bar even higher. Furthermore, they can see what happens at Nebraska if you can win quickly, you'll be accused of knocking up a cheerleader. Nine-win seasons are the standard and back in the day, you had to beat OU. Remember when Ozzie took a trip to Colorado and when there was a petition on O-street to get rid of Devaney? Nebraska may be a top ten coaching job, but coaches who are already well situated will be asking themselves what the odds are of being successful. All of us may think it would be an easy choice, but making $3,000,000 in their current, secure job, may not look so bad even if it was $5,000,000 at DONU with fairly high downside risk. If Alberts has to settle on a coach that is not from a winning program, it is a very high risk for him.

He could go with Mickey because he seems to have the players on his side and in a very positive mood. He is an excellent recruiter and his other coaches respect him. That is a strong foundation on which to build a head coach. Alberts may think he can develop MJ into a great head coach from that foundation.

I’m looking at the Backup QB wrong!

I’m looking at this all wrong. From the QB room’s view they figure the O-line is so pathetically bad, any QB is likely to get killed. The less they are out there, the less likely they will be killed. Want to shorten the series and save your life? Throw a pick!

For them it’s not next man up, it’s next victim up!

Shows how much a warrior Casey Thompson is!

Optimistic dreamer but…..

Mickey has to know how dire this situation is. He should tell Trev that if he has a coach that is available now that he should hire him and work it out so he and Mickey could work together to get this mess organized and be able to go all out on recruiting and have a chance to salvage something for next year. If he really wants what’s best for this program he and Trev and other smart, creative people should figure out some way to save it. This isn’t going to work fast enough. I realize this idea has no chance of happening but this all seems so stupid and poorly managed.

Husker Board posters, and who they may or not prefer for next Head Coach

I looked at 3 different threads that include posters mentioning who they would or would not like to see as the next head coach.

These will just be little snippets of their comments and are not intended to take those comments out of context.

There are about 15-20 guys who have expressed preferences one way or the other. Many were not chosen simply because I have several of them on "Ignore" and don't pay attention to anything they post.

The 3 threads I used were: Coaching rumor, Hugh Freeze, and Keep MJ as head coach.

Not in any particular order and IF I do mischaracterize something you posted, and I have misread it, feel free to clarify what your post said.

Again, I only used a snippet of some of the more lengthy posts.

We should all be in agreement that none of us know for sure what Trev's final decision will be. Every one of us is entitled to change our choice,
or our opinions as new information on coaches and situations change.

dingle: BOB and Mickey. BOB makes the most sense. Aranda doesn't make sense.

konaki: I want Mickey for several reasons. Mickey does have experience as a HC.

tinmsun: Non-committed.

Chuck003: Non-committed but not Mickey. Did mention Aranda. Lane top of his list.

dan84: Not Doeren. He would be a "give up" hire. Not for Prime, Doeren, Lane, Freeze, or Leach.
(Added) The original list included Urban, Fickell, Aranda.

scarletred: For Aranda. Prefers Aranda over Campbell, LL or Klieman.
Lane Kiffin is high on his list. BOB needs to be considered.

leodis: Doeren would be an awful hire. (Added) Urban or MJ. Also on board for the Lane Train or Whittingham.

headcard: Would love Aranda if he brings OC and OL coaches with him. Kiffin, Stoops, Ruhle would be amazing. Likes Aranda and could probably get on board with BOB.

HuskerDrew: Hugh Freeze, also Dykes at TCU. Still on Leipold.

TheHuskerFreak: Freeze should be a strong candidate.

Sinomatic: Hugh Freeze. This guy wins! NO to BOB. Prefers Meyer, Freeze, Fickell, Lane or MJ.

MetrixHusker: Freeze should be on the list.

hephusker. Prefers someone besides BOB, but would take him.

mgbreis: Mickey is the popular choice. But mgbreis doesn't elaborate.

Recruiting: MJ is not qualified to be the HC here.

Pennsy: MJ would really be a good head coach. But, he doesn't endorse him. Would love Lane.

Laner2: Barney Cotton. There I said it!

Mack In Motion: Meyer. Then Kiffin, then MJ. Hard pass on BOB.

littlespeedhuskerfan: Predicts it will be Chadwell.

Frozone: 1 Kiffin, 2 Leipold, 3 Aranda. Would be okay with BOB or Klieman.
Delirious if it were Meyer or Peterson. NO to Campbell.

flatout24: The list of coaches he does NOT want include LL, Klieman, Campbell, Fleck, Leach.

Bleed78: Meyer, Kiffin, Freeze, Fickle and MJ. Honorable mention to Chadwell and Grimes.

Baxter 48: Not sold on BOB. Any assistant coach hired should be Mickey.
Meyer and Kiffin are not coming. Would love Whittingham.

moralvictories: In order: Meyer, Freeze, Briles, Ruhle, Kiffin, Aranda, BOB,
Whittingham, Klieman, Campbel,l or Chryst. "It will take more than beating those powerhouses Rutgers and Indiana to convince me that Mickey should have the job."

Husker Sledge: Meyer, Aranda, BOB, Lane or MJ. Thinks it will be BOB.

Husker OH: If it's a Big XII coach he prefers Leopold. Feels that BOB makes
sense. His emotional side is pulling for Mickey. His analytical side say,s Lance. He feels any of the 3 should be successful, yet cautions because his landing gear is in repair.

HominidHusker: Leans towards BOB. Impressed with LL, but questions his recruiting. Ruhle, Aranda, maybe Freeze, Kiffin, Klieman, Mullen but feels these are less realistic. Hard NO on Chadwell or Calhoun types. Rooting for Mickey but thinks the risk might be too big to have immediate success. Most realistic hire is BOB.

BuckysBoy1: Vance Joseph as HC and DC.

mikecanale: "I think it's Aranda if he wants it."

TripleOption67: Meyer, Kiffin, Aranda, Whittingham, Clawson, Leipold.
Hell NO to O'Brien!

MikeRileyGBR: "Looking forward for my profile pic coming home to roost after 7 years." Lane Kiffin.

1NebrFan: Any of the following: Meyer, Fickell, Peterson, Kiffin, Freeze.
The second tier would be Aranda, Leipold, and O'Brien.

pahusker139: BOB or MJ. "I only want to consider coaches that are not
a challenge to spell."

MargotDeeper: "My heart says Ed Orgeron w/Mickey as Asst. Coach.
I think the smart move is Bill O'Brien."

Dallasblackshirts: Urban, Ruhle, O'Brien, Kiffin, and Leopold.

NikkiSixx: Mickey, Urban, O'Brien

spartenhusker: Kiffin.

Anegada1: My top choice is Ruhle. Would not be unhappy with Mickey.

itseasy: I could support Mickey, BOB, and Lane. I believe ANY of these 3 could find large success at NU if the following steps are taken:
1. Fire Duval and bring it a proven strength, speed, and conditioning expert;
2. Reduce the overall squad size to 110 players;
3. Spend $ 5 million dollars total for top OC/DC/DL coaches. Retain Mickey if not HC as well as Applewhite, Beckton, and Busch.
4. Use as much NIL money as possible to upgrade aspects of the weak position groups:
5. Be aggressive in the portal for available big bodies that are proven, producers. Emphasize JUCO kids that are potential Day 1 starter.

Feel free to correct any rare mistake I may have made in this thread. LOL

Question about playing time/substitutions

I never played football but love me some Huskers. One question I have pertains to Casey Thomson telling the coaches he was going back in to play and Mickey saying okay. I get Casey is the starter but is he on that level to do that? Mj mentions Casey’s family a lot so I’m wondering if this will cause some issues later on with the rest of the team. If players who start just say I’m going in just because I’m a starter even if playing poorly will that work long term? Again, I never played football or sports. I get Michael Jordan or Magic Johnson saying that.

Recruiting Recruit Photo Gallery: Nebraska prospects visiting for Illinois game

The Huskers are hosting a group of about fifty prospects, including multiple 2023 commitments. Nebraska is also hosting the No. 1 player in the 2024 class, quarterback Dylan Raiola and 2023 Georgia offensive line commit Bo Hughley. Hit the link for the photo gallery.

Basketball Three Takeaways from Nebraska's 70-27 exhibition win over Washburn

The Nebraska women's basketball team opened its season with a dominate win over Washburn in its lone exhibition of the year. Alexis Markowski looked strong once against with a game-high 18 points and 10 rebounds. The defense was also impressive forcing 21 Ichabod turnovers and a 17.8 shooting percentage. The Husker now get ready for its season opener against Omaha next Monday, November 7.

When did you know????

I knew against Minnesota two years ago. 11:00 kick. 20 mph wind in the face of the Huskers. Ball at the 25. 4” of snow just pushed off the field. 30 degrees. HCSF calls a swing pass on first down. Fails to tell the QB… don’t throw that ****er backwards. 2AM throws it backwards. That’s when I knew. We were ****ed. And we continue to be ****ed. When will it end???

Recruiting Mickey Joseph on the road...[UPDATED 10/21 8:42a]

The bye week is generally a good time for the staff to get out on the road and recruit. The first bye week the staff was all over the country keeping contact with prospects and commits. Inside Nebraska has learned that interim coach Mickey Joseph will be in Arizona on Thursday and Georgia on Friday.

I'm not sure yet who he is seeing in Arizona but I know that he will attend Cedar Grove's game outside of Atlanta on Friday. That's the home of wide receiver commit Barry Jackson. It's also home of summer official visitors DB Kayin Lee (Ohio State commit) and WDE Adonijah Green (Louisville commit). Cedar Grove is also home to a handful of underclassmen who are offer worth too. Sean Beckton will be joining Joseph at that stop in Georgia.

On a related note, I will also be in Atlanta covering that game between Cedar Grove and Sandy Creek. I'll touchdown in Atlanta tomorrow and attend Cedar Grove's practice in the afternoon. As I find out where more coaches are heading, I'll post it.

Thursday update

>>
Running backs coach Bryan Applewhite is in Chicago visiting newly offered 2023 prospect Andre Crews. Some nice immediate follow-up there after the offer.

Sources also say that Applewhite will hit the Kansas JUCO scene late this week.

>> Slight switch in plans for Mickey Joseph. He will be in Georgia today. Still think he will be in Arizona on Friday but will try to double-check that asap.

>> Bill Busch was in Arizona on Wednesday and offered former Husker Kyle Vanden Bosch’s sons. Case and Bastian picked up offers. They are 2026 prospects. Bastian is a TE/DE and Case is a QB.

Friday update

>> There's been a slew off offers that have gone out in Illinois, Indiana, Wisconsin, Arizona, Georgia and more. I'll have more on that as I sort through it and gather some thoughts from the prospects.

>> Dylan Raiola isn't the only prospect of interest for the Huskers at Chandler. 2024 running back Ca'Lil Valentine and 2024 defensive back Kennedy Urlacher are ones to watch to see if they get offers this week.

Yes Kennedy is the son of Hall of Fame Chicago Bears linebacker Brian Urlacher. There is plenty of talent for the Huskers to scout in Arizona this week.

>> There is an incredible amount of talent down here. Yesterday the staff made a few offers at Woodward Academy in Georgia. Look for Sean Beckton to continue checking out Georgia prospects today. It's not a huge shock that he plans to hit talent factories Buford and Grayson.
