I think Sam M just made a really astute point with this tweet regarding Florida announcing that they're keeping Napier:

Boosters - do you want your money to go to fired coaches, or do you want it going to NIL to hire more talent? Rhule needs to get some better brains on the offensive staff, but screw paying a buyout.

It would be beyond short sighted stupidity to can Rhule any time soon. I’ve listened to people who I think have a pretty good handle on Florida’s situation who say they believe the analytics favor keeping Napier as well.

I'm just looking at it from the angle of there very well could be a longer leash for some coaches in the NIL world. You need ever dollar you can get to pay players.

The market needs to self-correct the ridiculous coaching contracts. Perhaps the need for player money will help move that forward.
Base pay + performance incentives + minimal long term guarantees.

Coaches repeatedly prove themselves unworthy of the crazy contracts they get.

Very few people can imagine being terrible at their job and walking away with millions.

I also think its stupid to fire someone with a massive buyout. I wanted changes, and changes are being made. Until they yield results above the norm, (one more win) I'm going to focus on other things. Everyone and everything around me will be better for it.

I would like to see our head coaches extended out about 5 years or so, but not much longer. Every year, get another year tacked on as long as things are well.

But if things are rough, the extensions are paused until you right the ship or are fired.

According to our AD, OSU and Oregon have a $25 mil and $20 mil NIL budget, while Nebraska’s is than $10 mil.
My question from that article, is that shared with all sports or just football? If it's all sports, and NIL is banned, how is that allocation determined? Do we return of the days of the "clandestine bagmen"?

Can universities supplement that model with something that smells like NIL or set a higher budget?

No one is actually literally calling for a Rhule firing because we know Neb can’t afford it yet. Staff needs to go though because Rhule is a shit coach and only is as good as his assistants (see Bobby Bowden)
I literally have seen our current staff outcoach the other side in one half of one game (Colorado 1st half) in nearly two years now.

That said, the dumbass universities like us better realize, shorter HC contracts are the way to go. If a coach won’t do it, then you know he’s a sack of shit.
If he knows he will win big, he will sign a short deal with automatic extension triggers written in

Great question, sounds like a Title IX nightmare.

It’s not NIL that schools need to be worried about budgeting for, rather it’s for paying players that will probably be coming soon. I think direct pay will be the way forward.

I still believe coach Rhule can get the team turned around now my percentage of him doing it is lower, just hope he decides to part ways with satt heck the grad assistant did a better job with the tight ends last year than what he’s doing this year let alone being the oc
The grad assistant is still on staff.

While that would be a simpler way to do it, I was under the impression that Title IX would require equal pay for women's sports so, for e.g., the rifle team members would have to receive the same pay as the football players. I could be wrong though (and frequently am).

Yes there were several the past few weeks.

I miss the game when it was about the game, the rivals, the memories made. All this NIL shit is a cluster****, the money deals are no doubt putting excessive pressure on young players to live up to, but it’s also easy to not give a fukk when you are paid up front with no repercussions if you don’t succeed. Need some regulations, it’s gotten a bit much.

Think of Jeff Simms, who knows what get got here last year other than free food from Amigos. Produced zero wins.

I don’t know. I did hear some on that I’m not sure if it had to be same pay for every athlete or not. One thing for certain is that more wins will equal more NIL $ coming in! That’s why we must start winning more.

Ok, maybe one or two

Still, we all know that it won’t happen, even those who want him gone.

And, we all know that Rhule isn’t an elite coach and never will be. We are literally batting an 0 for 6 since TO retired
And we fired statistically the two best of those 6 after a 10 and 9 win season.

Rhule has 3 more years tops IMO unless he makes big changes

I don’t think many want Rhule fired. (this year) But… if we go 5-7 again, I’ll have a tough time arguing with those who do.
I think it isn't remotely possible Rhule is going anywhere for the next couple years. In Year 3, we will see if his history repeats itself. I doubt it will.

But, at 5-7 I'm willing to give him the shot to make the changes its gonna take to at least give NU a chance moving forward.

Good luck with that. Good coaches know their worth. As long as people are paying big bucks and longer contracts no way you get an established good coach to settle for less

Agree. So a less established coache moving up to the big leagues would have to do.
Any school in P4 could have taken cignetti from James Madison

I guarantee you there’s another Cignetti out there, you just have to find him. But for now we are locked in for 3 more seasons at least.

But I do think Rhule will make changes after the season.

I can imagine it, but it ain’t gonna happen.

It just sucks that Nebraska doesn't have anyone in the state that has money like Phil Knight and ties to UNL...

Ugggg, just sucks that like, the richest man in the America doesn't like 48 miles form UNL.

Shucks.
Warren is far too smart to “invest” in college football players.

Cignetti and Campbell (and several others) weren't in a position to demand a King's ransom when they were hired. Even though they could make more money somewhere else I bet they stay at their schools and build a legacy. The real thing schools need to focus on is getting a quality athletic director who can identify a diamond in the rough. The truth is most schools haven't demanded excellence from ADs because the money has been exploding for the last 50 yrs.
That's changing (in terms of excess relative to need) and their might be some accountability coming to athletic departments across the country. Emphasis on "might be". 80 years of fluoridation has lowered the avg IQ below Chris Kattan.

I don’t understand how anyone can look at the product he has put on the field at NU and still think that Rhule is a good coach. As a head coach he has had more losing seasons than winning seasons. Yes, he has taken two college teams from being bottom dwellers to winners, but then he bolts. So we have no way of knowing if the product he produces has staying power. Shit, even Frost parlayed one magical season at UCF into monetary gold.

I have zero hope that Rhule will turn us around. I have seen all I need to see. An uninspired team not ready to play and that is consistently outschemed and outcoached. Zero improvement from last year. Zero.

But yeah, we are stuck with him for probably two more losing seasons and empty stadium seats. What fun.

Well without question he would be on the hot seat in year 3 if 5-7 happens.

Only 2 years is too early canning someone before he even has recruited the majority of his starters on his rooster..

IMO Rhule is a good coach but he probably hitched his wagon to the wrong play caller. Rhule I don’t believe has ever called plays and that’s a weakness. I think he’s a very good program builder and manager but needs in particular a better OC.

I also believe that fan expectations for a true freshman QB were ridiculous. I predicted these struggles against B1G defensive coordinators and defenses. Our defense other than IU has largely been good enough to be an 8-9 win team. Our offense has not. The reasons for that are pretty obvious and he’s taking steps to correct that.

Some of the problem is that we don’t have a great option other than a struggling freshman QB. . That said, if Raiola struggles at USC early, I would do what Gary Barnett suggested on the radio, bench him and let somebody else have a shot. I know you’re down on Haarberg, but the dude looked in control of the offense last Saturday when he came in and his feet might be our best weapon.

Rhule is not good in games. Botched timeouts, challenges are a regular thing in close ones.

Rhule’s teams often come out flat, so I’m not sure how he is as a motivator (ironically).

He seems to be able to recruit, but not we still have frosts guys at key positions all over the field.

If he’s a good coach, what specifically is he good at?

(Not picking on you, dingle, this is a general question)

Had the same question when reading his post. And I’m also not picking on him. Just what makes anyone say “he’s a good coach” right now based on what we’ve seen here so far? Other than blind homer loyalty. He mostly says the right things to the media? I guess. Every other measurable is a C rating or lower in my book. Literally every single one
