Who is going to replace Banker, and Stewart

I think it depends on if you'd rather the DC focus on recruiting or being an Xs and Os guy. If you take an NFL guy, he'll be an older dude that probably won't relate to kids well, but if you take a younger college coach who's better with kids, he won't have as much Xs and Os experience.

Not sure it's that black and white.

Pelini was an NFL guy when hired by Solich.

Exactly. Bo was an Xs and Os guy who couldn't recruit because he couldn't relate to the kids.

No you said the NFL coach would be an older guy who couldn't relate to kids. When Bo Pelini was hired as DC he wasn't old, and players loved playing for him and he related fine with the players. You are trying to equate not wanting to recruit with unable to recruit and inability to relate to players when it comes to Pelini.

Spot on. The poster may have been trying to be funny?

Right, Pelini wasn't a bad recruiter when somebody else made him do it.

I'll throw out the idea of Kenny Wilhite for S coach --- has coached DBs (at a lower level), familiar with Riley, recruiting connections in St Louis and KC, already familiar with NU targets for 17-18-19 classes, oh and former Husker is icing on the cake.

I was curious whether folks think we'll do the 2 coaches in the defensive backfield thing, or if that was a temporary construct because last year our backfield sucked, and this year, we had 2 DB coaches, one of whom we mostly knew was one foot out the door.

Well it would either be that or a second DL I would think. I was just thinking making Wilhite the Asst DB coach with emphasis on S and DW the overall DB coach---spitballing, some upside with Kenny I think.

Yah his Midwestern connections would be nice. I wonder who the DW equivalent for Midwest recruiting would be though.

I don't remember Bo being an exceptional recruiter. Hence why the talent on our roster is in the dumps.

You need to read what you wrote originally about NFL coaches. Then read how I responded.

What you wrote simply isn't true. It is too simplistic and too black and white.

I have zero desire to turn this into another our roster is depleted because of Pelini thread.

Bud Foster - Va Tech (he has a $900k salary)
Dave Wommack - Ole Miss ($800k)
Gene Chizik - North Carolina ($280)

I really think a second O-line coach is needed more than anything. Like it or not but 3 coaches have not shown their worth yet and their product on the field has been terrible. Two of those guys were fired this past season, Cav is the only guy left. Blame it on talent if you want, but something is obviously not working and adding another mind on the O-line wont hurt anything but maybe Coach Cavs pride.

Les Miles is an Offensive Line guy. Bring him on as Assistant Head Coach/Co-Offensive Line

Not sure if your being serious but I would love that. Unfortunately, I think we all know, that's not likely to happen. Looks like Les maybe rowing the boat next year.

I'm still pulling for Raheem Morris if they choose the NFL route. His college stint at KSU was pretty successful working for Ron Prince of all people. Still young, and very experienced.

Not totally disagreeing on Bo, but name a team in the Big Ten West that has more talent than Nebraska?
Perceived talent? I think teams like Wisconsin and Iowa are putting better teams on the field because they have an established culture of toughness across the board. they recruit players that play hard physical football, regardless of stars, that fit their style of ball.
Wisconsin and Iowa have had more talent on o-line for the last decade. Run the ball well, and play good hard nosed defense. You recruit guys that love contact and love the weight room and are football smart, and you build that culture. Talent is a complex formula, where in, passion and attitude are severely overlooked in many cases

Of course there are exceptions, but I still think it's true for the most part. College coaches tend to stay in the college ranks because they enjoy working with the kids, but the real tacticians move up to try their hand in the NFL.

doesnt seem to want to be at the collegiate level.
I'm not sure what opportunities he's had to get back into college after his HC days with the Bucs. I do know he rose pretty quick and fell a little hard in the NFL. From what I observed at KSU, he did his job with passion and relatively well. I guess I'm only looking three years out max. $750k/3 years tough to pass up.

He was at K State for a single season and left to go back to the NFL. He is now coaching receivers

Yeah I get that, but it was to go from being a DC in college to eventual HC at the NFL team he recently left. I tend to agree with your sentiment, but I don't think anybody knows if he's 100% opposed to the college game in favor of the NFL. Now if we knew he turned down DC at Bama as a hypothetical, I think you're 100% correct.

Regardless this thing is probably already a done deal and we'll find out soon enough.
