I think the game is extremely hard to referee in real time, but if you have one play, the qb doesn't make any moves in the pocket, doesn't buy time, doesn't avoid rush or open up passing lanes and just throws into double coverage, I have a hard time rewarding the offense for that. This is the same thoughts I have about illegal hits...if the defense gets beat, they lose the ability to "make up for it" by knocking out the ball carrier. And if the offense puts themselves in a position that the only way to win is to throw basically a hail mary, then live with the contact. I would say, the offensive player should have been shoving as well.
It is hard, excep these officials in this conference blatantly and intentionally pull this crap as they deem themselves as invincible and above reproach.
They are getting better at apologizing so that's improvement.
Another drive that should have ended was on the one they just tossed up. Robinson ran out of bounds to come back to that ball. I believe Nebraska could have challenged that one though and didn’t.
But it does because it never gets called. It is just like holding being on every play but the refs are looking for at specific players and specific keys on specific teams. So if your team gets caught holding a lot, they are likely to catch you. The games are already way too long but the only way to manage it would be challenges on PI or Holding...and as bad as it is...it is still way better than 30 years ago when guys wouldn't even catch a ball or be in bounds or cross the goal line and it would count.
Did they call offensive holding on USC? Probably not - how many games is that now with no holding calls?
Yeah, what is that stat again? Like how many offensive holding calls have we had compared to our opponents?
They were grabbing our dline around the neck all day.
Go back and watch the number of holds that came from their O that were never called, not just the line but their receivers and backs as that was the only way they were able to keep us from making monsterous plays in their backfield which we spent quite a bit of the day in and yes our D was faster than their O as for the most part when they got big chunk plays we ran their skill guys down and caught em from behind including Bullock. We used a 4 man rush all game and mauled their OL.
I agree. We have replay in order to make sure the game is called properly. It is a way of being able to correct incorrect officiating. Why limit it then to just the actual play? Why not use it to determine the legitimacy of penalties and non calls? Of course, that could get out of hand so I like your suggestion that each coach get one “penalty challenge” per half that would include a review of non calls as well as calls.
On the replay even the announcers noted the non called PI
Rhule challenged 1 spot and corrected it-it was a yard off and changed the awarding of a first down. And it was obvious.
Not just the announcers but their rules expert said plainly that it was PI.
There is no reality in a sport based on capitalism where the entire system wouldn't want Nebraska to be great. Think about the millions of dollars lost because our games against Indiana, OSU, UCLA, and USC were basically unwatchable for millions of fans. We are a blue blood with a national audience, and an epic history...basically being the greatest team of all time. We had a number of incredible matchups this year and most of the time the product we put on the field was subpar at best. Refs might make calls against us because we have been the most poorly coaches team in college football for 10 year and they expect our players to make mistakes and our players do put themselves in positions to beat their opponent and get calls, but to think that anybody is against NU being great is so absurd.
Probably start with challenging a flag, and then also allow them to check for other infractions. Hopefully they just do away with holding and pass interference penalties outside of personal fouls. Players will adjust, such a stupid sport to build bodies and talent around arbitrary rules like "did he turn around in time" or "were his hands inside the shoulders". And you can allow pick plays, WR and TE can tackle corners. Maybe add in a couple more offensive advantages like allow multiple guys in motion, or to start from a head-start like in Canadian football, or few guys on the LOS. These arbitrary penalties on PI and holding really do ruin the game.
He’ll you don’t even see measurements in HS. I help at a local HS( stats) we had a playoff game in the first round. I was down 30 yds from our coaches . We ran a play on 3rd and 4 . I signaled 1st down back to our coaches. The white hat looked said 4th. I ran back and yelled to our HC call for a measurement. They did it’s was a 1st by a 1/4 of the football. I asked the line judge on our sideline what the Fk are you guys looking at to not to at least call for measurement ? Officials have become extremely lazy .
