There’s been quite a bit of smoke around a rumor that Nebraska has found its new assistant coach.
Haven’t been able to confirm anything yet, but all signs are pointing to Florida Associate Head Coach Armon Gates joining the Huskers.
If true, this would be the exact opposite of Nebraska’s side in the Rashon Burno disaster from a few years ago.
Gates just left Northwestern for Florida on April 8, meaning he’s only been on the job for a few weeks in Gainesville.
He spent five seasons at Northwestern, where he helped the Wildcats make their first NCAA Tournament appearance and NCAA Tournament win in program history in 2017.
Prior to Northwestern, the Chicago native coached under Porter Moser at Loyola-Chicago from 2011-13. He also served as an assistant at TCU and Kent State.
Stay tuned...
***UPDATE (MONDAY, 7:50 p.m)***
I can tell you that Gates is definitely a candidate and likely the top candidate for Nebraska right now. However, the Huskers do have other options out there if things don't work out with Gates.
First off, he hasn't even officially left Florida yet, though I heard UF head coach Mike White was telling other coaches on the recruiting trail last week that Gates was gone.
From what I've gathered it just wasn't a good fit for Gates, and White is letting him find another opportunity elsewhere. That's all I know as to why he was only with the Gators for just over three weeks.
The big issue for the Huskers is that Gates will have other high-major schools interested in his services. But given the timing of things with the recruiting calendar and graduation coming up, I'm guessing NU wants to get a guy in place asap.
So that's where things stand as of now.
***UPDATE (TUESDAY, 8:20 p.m)***
I've been told that Gates to Nebraska is a done deal and an announcement will officially be made this week.
***UPDATE (THURSDAY, 8:08 a.m.***
From the Chicago Sun-Times this morning...
Sources confirm that Gates is now headed back to the Big Ten, with an official announcement forthcoming, and will join Nebraska coach Tim Miles’ coaching staff, effectively ending a wild few weeks.
