I am trying to be excited. I grew up with the team from way back in the Jack Moore/ Carl McPipe days. The school invested an embarrassing amount of money in the program, and Miles has brought a new kind of optimism. However, I see Creighton is still the unquestioned king and they have two kids from in state starting, plus another top recruit coming from small town Kansas.

Why do we continue to be #2 in a 2 team state race?

Because we'd rather win press conferences than games? The roster management the last few years has been well below average, and it's no surprise to me that the results have reflected the same.

Just watch each team play. Watch the offensive flow of each team. Watch how the off ball players move and are thinking ahead as to positioning. When I watch Miles team I see no real attempt to run an actual play. Just a lot of passing to end up with a marginal shot. The past two years this was so apparent with Pettaway and White it was hard to watch. Watch McDemott's team as to how they are scheming during the possession to achieve a certain outcome or shot. That tells me Miles may be entertaining at the mic but lacks actual coaching skills. Just my observations and thoughts.

I think maybe what people don't understand is that basketball is more about recruiting than maybe any other sport. If you have elite talent, there isn't that much "coaching" required. Of course, there's development and managing personalities, but for the most part, talent is the name of the game. This is why some coaches hop around and turn around teams quickly because they are able to land top flight recruiting classes - although the verdict is out as to whether they do this on the up-and-up.

Nebraska, like it or not, wants to a) do things the right way and b) hasn't been really relevant in...ever.

It will take a slow build, hitting a couple homerun diamonds in the rough and then some more magic to sustain it. Can it be done? Yes. Will it help if you get rid of a coach after four seasons? Only if you are interested in a Bob Huggins, Scott Drew type.

I will take my chances with Miles. He simply won (and did so by turning around bad programs) everywhere he's been. That's a track record and I want to see it come to fruition here at Nebraska.

Well I agree with a lot of what you say here, this year from the two games I have seen there has been a lot more movement and less hero ball. Of course we have played nobody worth anything yet, so against better competition we may revert back to the crap we don't like

Now onto the starting 5. The way Glynn W. and Tai W. run the back court is something that we haven't had is quite some time. To say otherwise means you haven't watched the product yet, or don't know what to look for.. We looked REALLY good against Sac St. for the 1st 8 minutes of the second half when Miles just played Ed Morrow, Michael Jacobson, Tai Webster, Glynn Watson and Jack McVeigh

Roby - This kid can do it all. He has NBA type abilities. Patton this and Patton that... I know they don't play the same position, but I take Roby over him if I had to choose.

He can post up
He can play point
He can shoot the 3 ball
He can dish it
He can block shots
He can dunk it from the Free throw line

The only problem is you can tell he isn't comfortable yet, and that has to do with catching up to speed

Gill - I had high expectations of him. To say he is a bust after two games after coming off a year off and a knee injury. I am going to give him a few more games to judge him

Tshimanga - you can tell he isn't ready yet, but what are you going to do. We need his height and abilities to compete. He has the potential to be great as well

Horne - When we recruited him I had him penciled in as a 4, and a undersized one at that. Instead he is a 3, that can straight up hit shots. He is a liability on defense at the moment, but will get better at that.

Taylor - Much more that I expected. He lacks at dribbling, but makes up for it with vision and defense. He also can shoot the basketball a lot better then most give him credit for.

Our starting 5 are a solid as we have ever been, and this Creighton love fest is just stupid. Are we going to beat them this year, probably not. I am just sick and tired of all the complaining. This team is head and shoulder the most athletic team we have had in quite some time.

I'm not going to post it again cause I don't feel like going back and getting the information, but "on paper" Nebraska has more talent then Creighton

4* players

Glynn Watson
Ed Morrow
Anton Gill
Jordy T. (Some Sites)
Isaiah Roby
*James Palmer... Not playing yet

Show me where Creighton is better "on paper"

Miles has recruited just fine so please STFU and let these last 2 classes show what they can do. You and the very least have to give Miles through 2017, before bringing out you torches and pitchforks! McDermott coaching style gives Miles fits, but guess what Miles coaching style gives Mich St. fits. WE ARE 2 GAMES INTO THE F****** SEASON AND EVERYONE HAS ALREADY WROTE THIS TEAM OFF.

I'll interested to see how they compete with Creighton and Kansas on December 7th and 10th..

We may have some growing pains early which shouldn't be a surprise to anyone but I would like to see us finish round 7-9 in the B1G would be a sign that Miles is improving in a very difficult conference that may be the best in the country year in year out.

More worried about LaTech, Dayton, and Clemson right now.

And Creighton will still stomp us by 20. That would indicate a coaching issue.

Starting 5 as solid as ever? I love the enthusiasm but that's just a tad extreme to say after game 2. I'd give 10 points and take the 1992 and 1996 starting 5s to wipe the floor with this team.

Is CU better 'on paper'? Three 4 stars, Ten 3 stars, and two freshmen signed for next year who are both 4 stars. Oh, the game MVP vs Wisky....a 3 star from Omaha. So Nebraska has more 4 stars, but they have depth Nebraska can only dream about.

I agree that this is probably the most athletic team Nebraska has had for a long time.

I'm not armed with a pitchfork trying to run Miles out of town. I'm almost 50, and dying to see Nebraska just be relevant in basketball every 2-3 years, and win a freaking game in the dance. I don't know if Miles is the answer, but running him off just sets Nebraska back to square 1 all over again. So I hope he can do something with these guys, but we are still a few pieces short IMO.

I'm first, last, and always for Nebraska. But I'm also a basketball nut. I want CU AND UNO for that matter to do well. If CU does well it forces Nebraska to strive to be better, which they haven't strived to be for most of my life.

Well um...they aren't a power. But, people around here would settle for just a good program. They don't need to be a power. The good news is you have the power to ignore those that "bitch" about our underwhelming basketball program.

I've only got one poster on ignore and that is a poster from another site. I don't have to ignore ignorant bitchfest comments that are almost knee-jerk in nature. This is my team as well.

Other than Webster, NU is going to be playing a bunch of underclassmen. I EXPECT to see flashes of great play coupled with some not so great play by the youngsters. It's still exciting to think about how these kids will match with CU and the B1G in the next 2 years. This year? Not so much maybe.

Is saying Creighton has been the better team "bitching" to you? I'm not willing to concede the Creighton game. I think we can beat them at home....but, they have owned Miles.

Cmon...reallly? Do you really think Nebraska is better on paper at this point?

Just watch each team play. Watch the offensive flow of each team. Watch how the off ball players move and are thinking ahead as to positioning. Good post. Off the ball-- watch offensive execution. The base "motion" offense actually includes very little movement so by definition Miles' motion offense is very poor since the players do not actually move much. And the easiest thing to guard in basketball is a player who is either standing still or jogging.

A characteristic of Miles' Nebraska teams has always been players not playing hard on the offensive end. Even his best team relied on end of shot clock one on one or long threes by Petteway. The offense seldom creates easy shots when going against a good, in conference opponent that has spent time scouting us.

If anyone out there hated Sadler's offense, but likes Miles' offense... you need to know that they are running the same offense with many of the same concepts.

And finally, screen execution is poor at best. Most of the time, players leave early before a screen has been set and they pretty much never come off the screen at much more than 3/4 speed. Sometimes players are literally jogging off picks. So ultimately, Miles goes back to his bread & butter on the ball game. Watson is very good off ball screens so that's not a bad option for him individually, but the lack of shooters on the wing minimize his effectiveness since good defenses will pack the lane (there was a reason you were always wide open in the corner, Bennie).

And here's a wild prediction: McDermott will size up Miles' team and play at least a 1/3 of the game in a half court zone. And we will struggle against it. Again.

They will have a good defensive game plan, and G Watson better be ready, because the bullseye will squarely be on him.

That I agree with and every other team will focus on him defensively as well. Somebody else is going to have to hit some shots when they go to help on Watson.

Is saying Creighton has been the better team "bitching" to you? Or could it be you are slightly delusional?

No need to constantly get into it. Creighton may be the better team. I think big red22 said "on paper". On paper it looks like we've got a competitive team. As dinglefritz said, they are young. I'm not going to go into this season with high expectations and will be happy when they exceed that.

Again, on paper, creighton #22 in AP and #20 in usa today.

Well, he could be wrong in his assessment. But RRP was not arguing about "on paper", now was he?
On paper Creighton is considered to be better...so I'm not sure what you mean. If you want to say Nebraska has more star power according to the recruiting rankings go for it. But those rankings get thrown out the window the moment they step foot on campus. Creighton has far more proven players than us right now and that's what's on paper. Again, not saying we can't beat them but "on paper" Creighton beats Nebraska.

I'm just saying that we aren't as bad as you make us out to be. Do I want to beat Creighton? With all my heart and every time. Do I think that NU will pull off the upset? Probably not. I'm hopeful they will be competitive enough to keep us in the game.

On paper, Nebraska isn't even this yet.

Holy crap...now you try to pull that crap? Just because you can't handle some criticism means I think this Nebraska team is bad? Mkkkkay, nice deflection but not surprised as that's par for the course with you. Congrats super fan...I'm glad you want us to beat Creighton with all your heart. But, I have no idea what that has to do with the topic at hand. It's laughable to say Nebraska is better on paper and the majority of the country and probably the Nebraska fanbase would say that. And no, that does not mean Nebraska is bad but I'm sure it will hurt your feeling nonetheless.

No deflection. I'm just saying that just because I don't constantly bitch about NU's teams/coaches/players doesn't mean I don't want them to win.
