Diaco apparently thinks the defense was great?? I'm not on the panic train like some. I think we will get better and I think he did play vanilla for our first game but this comment does cause me to worry a little.

Am I reading into this too much?

Diaco said he was pleased with the defense’s performance against ASU and that playing time for the young group will be invaluable. “They were fantastic, just like they’ve been since the moment I met them. … The work we got done today was just great.”

I saw it more as him defending their effort. Didn't get the feeling that he thought everything was great, he just really seemed to dwell on the positives. I think this will be his MO.

I hope he does not think that defense was great? Lets hope for the best next week.

I just got that quote from an article. I think ill go watch it to get it in context.
I remain optimistic about the future of the defense. I just hope it's sooner rather than later

Let me know your thoughts after you watch it. I got a different context watching the interview, than I did reading that quote.

It was pretty good for a first time outing with a ton of new young guys against a very good QB and offense.

Let him compliment his boys.

I was not happy with the defensive performance either but it's early on in the first season of his system. We would be fools if we didn't expect some growing pains.

I agree with this. I watched the game again, and it really wasn't as bad as it first seemed. If you take away the special teams touchdown and the safety, and if you look at how they adjusted in the second half, there's some positives to be had there.

Diaco's defense is going to give up yards. In some ways, it's not that different from Iowa's philosophy: keep everything in front of you, make them go the length of the field on an extended drive and wait for them to make a mistake, don't give up the big play. Hell, Iowa even has their linebackers covering underneath routes, too (and I'm pretty sure their fans hate it as much as we do).

Would I rather have an attacking defense? Yep. But we're not built for it, and that's not who this guy is. The D will get better. How much--and how soon--are the questions Bob is going to need to answer this season.

I thought about Iowa and Wisconsin when I was watching Newby struggle in zone. How are their LB's so good in zone coverage?

In the second half they only gave up 10 points, got a couple 3-and-outs, got a safety (2 points) and got an interception.

2 turnovers, gave up 8* points, and got numerous 3-and-outs to end the game. That is very positive.

I think some years they have LBs who can cover well, and some years they don't. I remember them getting burned more than once by by slow linebackers trying to cover Northwestern's speedy receivers underneath, and Iowa State has given them fits there as well.

I agree. I don't understand why it took so long to adjust, but once we did, we played well.

He's on the energy bus too. If you say enough good things it will come to be.

He also said the ultimate goal is to score one more point than the opponent. They did that didn't they? :)

Numerous three and outs to end the game? What game were you watching?

No, they completely F'd it up. The plan was to let them score at the end and then stop them on 2 pt conversion and win by one

They had 165 fourth quarter yards...10 points and a finger tip away from 17 points. That's not good defense.

The idea that we are good with allowing that in the 4th quarter to a Sunbelt Team is astonishing.

Football isn't scored by yards, just like the popular vote doesn't mean crap either.

The only reason we were in that position is because the offense failed to make a few first downs and an onside kick being ran to perfection. That can hardly be pinned on the D.

Yes 165 yards and ten points with a snatch away from 17 points in the 4th quarter can be pinned on the defense. You will never convince me that was good or even acceptable.

Why is that not acceptable for a first start for a young defense with a new scheme? What did you expect?

They gave up 10 points, netted 2 and got 2 turnovers.

Can I get a ruling on when we can use "what ifs and almosts"? Seems that if someone says if so and so hangs on to the ball then we win, the immediate response is no what ifs. But you are giving an additional 7 points that didn't happen. Also conveniently forgetting that the receiver who was a fingertip away was also ineligible to touch the ball first so it wouldn't have mattered if he caught the ball.

Think what you want. Never in a million years would I have thought these 4th quarter stats would be seen as acceptable...from anyone but particularly Arkansas St. I can't even...

I posted something similar in the "Diaco" thread. What he said just doesn't sound good. They were far from fantastic, unless they were performing exactly how he was hoping and scheming, which is not good. It is so early, so I will chalk it up as a coach trying to keep his players up, even though every single one of them, and all of the public, knows the defense was not good. I am optimistic about him, but I could do without the painfully obvious fluffy bunny talk by our D Coordinator.

You are right on all accounts. Ifs and buts aren't necessary. My bad. Plus, thanks for pointing out the guy was out of bounds. I went back and looked and the official even dropped the hat.

A quote from someone who also has a brain.

"As far as Diaco's presser went I think he made some excellent points that many folks are still not understanding:

-They planned to give them the dink and dunk plays knowing it may give up yards but not so many points.

-The defense held them to 10 points in the second half, and virtually no long runs or long pass plays the entire game.

-19 of their points were not a result of the defensive gameplan. Punt return for 7, Another 7 as a result of personal fouls keeping the drive alive, 3 point kick at the half as a result of the helmet fiasco, 2 points safety.

All in all the defensive plan worked as they wanted it to.
Protect the inexperienced corners and don't give up the deep ball. Check. Let them have the underneath routes and minimize points. Check.

We shot ourselves in the foot at the end to let them back into the game, but the defensive gameplan and execution wasn't as bad as most here are making it out to be."

What do you want from him? I wasn't pleased but if I was the coordinator I would hope I'd be able to keep it between me and the players and not throw them under the bus.

I was talking to my hubby and he actually said we should cut Diaco a break. It's not easy protecting the players while at the same time dealing with just how bad things looked on Saturday. Diaco is always going to push the envelope so he added some superlatives about the defense's play that probably weren't necessary. My Tommy-kins thinks we should just give him a break and get things fixed on the field.
