The secondary

Does the team miss coach cooper? My goodness the secondary has looked lost the last several games, they’ve actually regressed since the early part of the season.
Yeah, I used to think they were a pretty good unit, but now see them as a liability. Top to bottom, our linebacker play is underwhelming too. Hopefully, the guys coming up are ready to step in. We need a talent upgrade at a lot of places.

The secondary looks like they're perpetually stuck in first game mode. So many pass completions look like we're just half a step off in breaking up the play... and that half a step doesn't seem to improve. I don't know if it's players or coaching.

It's definitely one of numerous areas that Rhule needs to look over in the off season.

With a comfortable lead I think Rhule wanted to get some younger players like Blye Hill in the game and give them some game experience which lead to a post play he was beaten on..

It's hard to make sense. Other than Cooper nothing else has really changed. My guess is they (Rhule/White) have allowed Butler to have a bit of a say in how they play on the back end coverage wise and quite frankly it's been to the detriment of the defense as a whole.

I love those guys and all they have put in time wise but I'm ready for every secondary guy playing significant minutes NOT named Wright to move on. Step slow, missed tackles, blown coverage. Whatever weaknesses they had last year was hid or masked well with Coop as coach. I know Butlers resume but color me not impressed year one with anything I seen from him.

That all said we are going bowling and that's a great thing. Hope like hell they move on from those older guys who wanna come back like Buford. My guess is they won't tho... especially with his brother still being here.

But what happened with the safety on that play? The tv replay showed the safety stuck in place way behind the play instead of playing deep.

He sucked just like I said he would. And Blye Hill is not that young and has game experience. When is this board going to figure out that I do in fact know what I'm talking about.

Well the common denominator here is Butler, so I'd place the blame there where it belongs. The secondary has looked tentative and downright lost at times this year. Butler needs to figure something out over the off-season or he's going to be looking for another job at this time next year.

The only thing Nebraska couldn’t do in order to secure the game early in the 4th quarter was give up quick TDs and they gave up 2. If your D cannot force teams to grind out drives and earn TDs then no lead is safe. Happened against Iowa in 2022 as well and nearly cost them the lead/game.

Secondary seems to have no clue what their responsibilities are and it’s been this way since the Illinois game, possibly UNI game too. That touchdown last night where Gifford crashed down towards LOS when he should have dropped back was a prime example.

Yeah but it's tough to tell what actually happened unless we know the actual play called. Was Gifford in a robber coverage? In that case, he was in the right coverage and it was the other safety that should have been rotating over. Regardless, this points to a coaching issue more than anything, as I agree our secondary has looked lost this year.

Don’t pat yourself on the back too hard.. He has barely sniffed the field dude..

Secondary has been ROUGH most or all of the year.
However, the TD against Ceyair Wright was just a great play by Wisconsin, and he was there to make a play.
The back corner TD against Buford was not great defense, but he still made a play on the ball, and it was a good catch.

But all the lack of run support and allowing way too many wide open guys and dink and dunk throws gets frustrating.

Wisky quickly picked on Hartzog like USC did and that’s when Blye Hill went in.

Was thinking the same thing. If I'm TW I just run blitz all game and force IO A to pass.... they cant or won't.
We thought that way several years ago and Iowa came out throwing the ball and chinander could never recover because he was set up to stop the run

This is his 1st year and had he been here for winter conditioning and the spring game, the secondary would be light years from where they are now. New cat, new way of teaching and Butler's teaching is far Coopers was. Butler's teaching pro style techniques with a pro style scheme and our safties are running in 2 different schemes at the same time. Cooper just resigned back in July and Butler got here the 1st part of August and didn't even have a full month with them the before the 1st game and kinda hard to pick up a new scheme/s on the fly no matter haow good a player or players are. Next year, the secondary will be light years better!

And when he did see the field, he immediately got blown by. He's been a non-factor this year just as I predicted and was ridiculed for.
He’s coming back off injury and hasn’t played all year. Once he knocks the rust off let’s see what he’s got
Coach Cooper was a great evaluator of talent. I’m interested to see what depth will look like next season in the secondary

They do need to get a couple out of the portal. Hartzog and Charles have a lot to be desired we need to do better there and someone much better than Gifford at rover..

Don't forget the experienced safety who should've helped over the top but got caught flat footed and looking in the backfield. Guess who

We did lose our best corner to graduation. That was huge. Hill’s injury played a big factor as well. Gifford has been very inconsistent and a couple of his mental mistakes have cost us chunk plays. Javin Wright made some good plays yesterday.

I'm willing to buy that. That's a theory that will be tested next year. If the secondary doesn't look significantly better next year, then Butler needs to be sent packing.

Are you kidding. And you actually wonder why people give you crap. See if you can figure it out before you respond. Try using your brain.

BTW wasn't Hill responsible for a turnover in our favor

One can hope I guess. I'm glad it hasn't taken DH 11 games to get guys playing better ...

I was at the game and then came home and rewatched it as I recorded it and they made mention that each Safety is in his own scheme.

What part of my statement was wrong?

I get a lot of crap for being right around here. At a far higher hit rate than just about anybody else.

Holgerson was what this Offense needed and was mentioned that I heard when I rewatched the recording of it after I got home from the game said that this was still Rhule playnook and this was his vison of his offense and Holgerson just tweeked a few things. Holgerson's attitude is what this offense needed as well, as they played yesterday with his attitude! Rhule wanted Holgerson last December and timing couldn't have been worse as he freshly in the unemployment line and needed to decompress along with what I think prevented it as well was his buyout. Now imagine what this offense woulda looked like now if he had been here through winter conditioning and the Spring game where we's be. 10-1 or 11-0
