Well then Rhule should be fired. If a HC lets a Position coach have say so over DC.
It’s been a bad outcome. Hate to see regression due to a scheme change.
Maybe the DC agreed, but if they refuse to address the issue then yes someone should be let go.
Don’t understand the added complexity in running a coverage typically seen in the NFL.
I suspect the loss of Newsome and Brown is most of the reason for this
Those guys were very good in man coverage on the outside and in the slot, respectively
Hill and Hartzog/Buford don’t have near the 1 on 1 skills as those two, which means we have to play a lot more zone

Regardless of the reason the philosophy is reminiscent of Chinander’s defense.
Need to ditch cover 4 for cover 2. They’re just giving away easy rush yardage on first down and easy dump offs over the middle on third.
If (big if) Butler initiated scheme changes that are contributing to our suddenly apparent defensive deficiencies, then White and/or Rhule should be forcing their will from here. Butler shouldn’t be allowed to play cowboy when career/program trajectories beyond his own are at stake.

Come on, what are you talking about!! Ha. I mean for years we heard how Bo should ditch that cover 2 look so that he could stop the run but NOW I guess Cover 2 is a run stopper!
I agree. They made an unsuccessful change. The bigger failure would be to not make an adjustment from here.
I think Butler can/will help with teams like Colorado, Indiana, USC but these other B10 teams operate differently. We got exposed and didn't adjust. Illinois had a great game plan vs a 3-3-5 as the DBs are needed to come down hill to help in the run game. At the end of the day I blame White as he is the DC.
You do not know if it works or if it doesn't until you implement it... If you're not changing, you are losing ground. One loss does not kill a season, but if they have been tinkering with the coverage and it is not working, go back to what worked. From what I have seen with my untrained eyes, it is a scheme that has gaping holes and offenses exploiting it. If the defensive scheme will work against Purdue, use it and use the off week to implement the old system.
Rhule has given free rein to White on defense. White should be fired if his DB coach is dictating coverages on the back end. Very Diacoesque.
One of the things Brian Flores does with the Vikings is to confuse QBs like Stroud with coverages on the back end. Virtually no DC runs the same coverages on every play or series. Stroud said Flores was giving him different looks on every play some of which he had never seen before. When you hire a DB coach assistant DC from the NFL, I'm afraid he's going to try to do things that your defense isn't mentally prepared to do. I hope they go back to basics this week.
Hopefully White and Butler can collaborate to simplify things, similar to how Busch did in the back end of the ‘22 season.
Seems like a very easy solution for Rhule. It hasn't worked, let's return to what has worked.

People have a year worth of game film now would be the only factor.
I mean, before the Illini game, people loved the defense. Maybe we don't throw the baby out with the bath water.
They let up 10 points at the half and like what, 50 yards rushing? Nu comes out in the second half with a chance to go up 10-14 points and the game is over right there. Instead the offense goes 3 and out (I think) and now you have a game again.
Now, if they make Purdue look like the most amazing offense in the country on Saturday....then you have issues.

Pretty good analysis right there. One game a season does not make. I am more curious to see what they learned from this game and how they will adjust going forward. I agree with others that you can over complicate things at the collegiate level. Sometimes coaches think they can scheme for every scenario.
Illinois didn’t need a years’ worth of tape, they just needed our game against UNI to understand how to attack are defense. They exploited every textbook weakness of cover 4. Isolated are corners on the outside( like the play against Hill), attacked over the middle with slants and shallow crossers, attacked the C gap with power runs which put out safeties at a disadvantage to crash down and fill these gaps.
Point being this scheme is toast. Back to the white board.
It will be hard to make it work against teams that know exactly how to attack it. Not all will.
Not when are DBs still don’t seem to get the gist of it. They’re playing too hesitant and second guessing whether they should keep in coverage or crash down. Plus, most BIG offenses don’t care about getting the big play which cover 4 tries to prevent, they’re more than content with 3-5 yard gains every down.
something went wrong on the OT run play. We sold out to stop an inside run I'm guessing based on what we thought the play call would be. Our edge pinched down too tight and our linebackers crashed the LOS. It wasn't so much a problem IMO with the scheme as it was the execution and call for that play. The TD pass following was clearly a blown assignment by a veteran player or players. I think those things are fixable.
A defense can make any pedestrian quarterback and look good if they don’t hurry him, sack him, hit him. We did not get to the quarterback on Saturday. They need to figure out how to fix that and the rest of it will figure itself out. Good secondaries owe a lot to their defensive line.
I do hope those problems are fixable. I just can’t get over how asinine it is to install a new defensive scheme in fall camp, that wasn’t worked on whatsoever in the spring.
