Scrimmage 2 notes

So if anyone bets on specific Nebraska game in 2024 based on the results of the 2018 Baylor vs Texas game or the 2017 Baylor vs Oklahoma game, because you know, those games coached by Matt Rhule and were closer than they should have been. Also should have their gambling privileges revoked.
Everyone is basing their optimism on the Rhule improvement curve and an 18 year old kid

Everything is based on something

Maybe you should save that "revoking privileges" talk for your high school kids and let adults do and bet what they want to bet?

Sounds like you'd be the perfect Gambling Czar in this ****ed up administration.

I would base it off of UTEP returning only 5 guys that started last year. And it’s his first year at UTEP. Granted, Scotty did have a few guys follow him from Austin Peay, so that may help the transition, but if they’re firing on all cylinders, game 1, on the road, that’ll be pretty damn impressive. Or our crowd noise sucks and Nebraska isn’t a very tough place to play.

I think our D will have something to say about that too.

Memorial Stadium has been a very tough place for the home team to play lately. And since our seniors apparently still pucker up when their parents are in town I’m dubious they’ll be loose come kickoff.

We’ve seen nobodies come in and hand it to us for too many years

Hope we win by 50, expecting it to be a game in the 2nd half

Staying completely away from the line. If anything I’d lean under.

This is an apples and oranges response, not to your post, but I just wanted to point something out.

In (year 1) at Temple, they turned it over 26 times, in (year 2) 26 times and (year 3) 20 times.

In (year 1) at Baylor, they turned in over 25 times, and in (year 2) 19 times, and (year 3) 20 times.

Obviously doesn't mean this trend has to continue, but if it does, it could be something systemic.

I used a sports reference that didn't use actual numbers, rather it used decimal points on a per game average. Example: .8 fumbles and .7 int = 1.5 per game times 13 games = 19.5 rounded up to 20. If I erred, it was not intentional.

I also didn't look at how many takeaways his defenses had in those years, or the net turnover rate.

I know a few people that saw him play multiple times that say he is legit. And obviously his school was very disappointed when he transferred to us. Kid is one of those guys that just makes plays. From what I have heard we will be better off it he comes in to the game then Purdy.
All the Dutch girls in Orange City were sorry to see him go.

At this point, the season is so close to happening I don't need any more historical analytic studies to predict what's going to happen. Season 2 actuals will tell us if there's been a jump or not from season 1. So now we just wait for the reality.

here is how much the hype train is rolling:

at this moment, we are less than 3 TD underdogs in the horseshoe against what everyone is calling the best Ohiost team ever
I keep looking at that juicy line...That game SCREAMS 45-14.

I always bet on the Husker game no matter what, for or against or the totals.

Right now I grabbed NU -19 (weird glitch or something) and I am interest in the totals, no clue what they will be but UTEP will probably struggle to get 20.

My point, more than anything is, even though they turned the ball over again in Year 2, overall as a team they had improved enough to win several more games.

Same can be said for NU backers based on the tsunami of offseason koolaid flooding the streets

I wouldn’t bet us to cover 30 against Westside

Have to see it first & and I absolutely despise the fact that we’re currently favored in our first 7 games

We haven’t earned it and Rhule covered just 1 single time last year as a favorite (vs N ILL) en route to our usual putrid 4-7-1 record against the spread.
For sure. I usually never bet Nebraska anyways, but I wouldn't touch one of their games with a 100 ft pole at this point. Until I see what they look like I trust nothing.

Really like the under in the UTEP game at 49.
Yeah, I am kind of leaning that way as well, but there are just so many unknows on each side. The new coach may be a solid coach, but they went 3-9 last year and it is UTEP. It's not like he took over a P5 team that already had a ton of talent.

For me I feel like it is probably going to be like a 42-10 type game. I think maybe like a 7-7 tie after the first quarter and then we roll after that by just running the ball and our size will just be too much. With that said, because we are such a beaten down program, I can also see like a 10-10 tie at half where we win 24-17.

my wishful thinking is that we go heavy on the run game for at least the first half and pound them in to submission. I would like to see 4 RBs get 8- 10 carries.

I agree that I hope we pound the rock, but I hope that the cream RB rises to the top. Wouldn't mind having EJ and Dowdell or Ervin getting getting like 15 carries a piece. I don't mind a little RB rotation, but don't want the pure platoon style. Ride the hot hand of the 2 and if 1 falls off start inserting others to test the waters.

Well of course we want to legit pound the rock BUT it also would be totally crazy not to use Raiola's arm talent to full advantage.

I'd be careful with that. UTEP looking to snap it quick on offense. Will be a lot of plays in this game.
Unless UTEP is having a bunch of 3 and outs, it might be hard to get a lot of snaps out of Shavers.

If NU is able to lockdown the corners, UTEP is likely to have a lot of 3 and outs, assuming they are gonna have a lot of trouble running the ball.

my problem with that idea is that he wasn't here for spring and we really don't know what he's shown other than koolaid practice reports.

Yeah you are right. "We" as in us arm chair guys don't know but I'm sure the coaches have gotten a pretty good idea of what he's capable of.

Again I'm just speaking based on my somewhat biased opinion based on what I've seen in the past from HH. The turnovers is a killer for a team that's trying to play championship Calibur defense. I've just seen HH turn it over a bit too much for my liking in the past.

Again just my opinion that a guy who has won at the level of Gramstad would understand the assignment of not turning it over at a higher level. Score, fg, or punt attempt after every series should be the aim on offense. Anyone who compromises that is probably have a bit lower on the depth chart.

“He may not have physical abilities………”
I think you have to separate physical and abilities in this case.
My understanding is that the concern with him is his size. A little on the light side for BIG Football.

Abilities wise, he is extremely accurate with the ball, I think the mental side is very good, as far as reads and where the ball should go. He has a very quick release.

I’m actually not making a case for him to be #2, I still think it will be HH for all the reasons you’ve said. But if that ended up being the case, as long as the Line can protect him, (obviously goes with all the QBs), I think he can be pretty darn good, and definitely no worse than we saw last year by a good margin.

If that makes sense.

I hope you are right. If his size is the biggest worry then I feel even better about him being the number 2 guy. That's not gonna change and imo if he shows he's not gonna turn it over and can make the throws I expect he will have a an even better chance.

When I say physical I'm thinking more size and big arm etc. I know Gramstad is a good athlete but physically HH is exactly what you want a QB to look like. Imo he just isn't a good QB and at a program like ours we shouldnt ever see what we seen at QB last year.

Holla

My biggest worry with the team still….

Satterfield. His offense absolutely sucks balls and he will be out of a job if we have the same results this upcoming year. At the very least, we now have Thomas who can step in and run the offense if needed. I know people cut him slack but last season was awful.

The one day 1 hire that I didn't like at all. Was familiar with him due to actually watching South Carolina. Contrary to public opinion they were glad he left and came to Nebraska. I spoke on this on other boards and of course was shit down as not knowing shit. But I know this to be true.

That said as bad as our QBs were last year it's kinda hard to blame Satterfield on that. If he signed off of the Sims pickup with Rhule he has to own that (as does Rhule) because man that was a huge swing and a miss. Other than that with what we had at QB and WR and injuries at RB it's impossible for me to blame Satterfield but so much. He was working with shit to be nice.

That said this year will be a lot different. He has some guys this year so the excuses won't be there imo. I'm looking to see huge improvements. He's gonna have to prove it to me. Have to say even though I wasn't a fan I gave him a clean slate coming here. Let's see how it plays out.

I agree. Last year’s situation showed how horrible our QB recruiting has been. I think Gramstad could win us games, especially with the WR talent we have. Even if he’s Scout team, it’s not a terrible option. He has the tools to test our D in practice!

Agree...We couldn't run the ball, protect the QB or pass, i'm not sure what part of the playbook Sat was supposed to use in that situation....but I need to see something this season for sure.

I'd take a Joe Ganz or Todd Reesing over someone who looks the part but can't perform ala HH or Tanner Lee.

Totals are 49?

So NU totals will be 38? UTEP will be 10?

Dang, hard to not like UTEP over 10.
So you think Nebraska going to show any of their hand before the Colorado game?
38 seems little high for a program that hasn’t scored more than that only 7 times in 5 years.

UTEP may not even get in the end zone…

tbf, Haarberg wasn't developed much as a QB in HS, had a coach on his way to being fired in first year, and was ghosted by his coach the next. Then last year he was pressed into service regardless of the fact he wasn't really ready to operate the passing aspects of the playbook. They shrunk the playbook to passes that would work for him and added some option offense, which suited his skills. In reality, Ron Brown and TO were probably as responsible for the offensive production we did get as much as Satt and Rhule.
Raiola and Kaelin are more suited to do the things Satt and Rhule want done.

Rhule has already stated that he isn't going to rotate 4 backs.
I 've heard him say 3. My hope is that we pound them in to submission in the first half where we get to the point that guys down the depth chart get multiple game reps. I want us to get up so much that Ives gets 8 carries as the #4 RB. Winking

He said ideally, he wants one guy to get around 20 carries, one to get around 12, and one to be situational.

Do you really think Colorado will be an astute study of our UTEP game??
I don’t think they study shit from our first game and come out and force their hand, because they’re “cocky” like that. JMO

I'll believe that when I see it. I think they're still trying to decide who is going to get what in this game. Which guy do you make situational? Dowdell maybe? I can see a scenario where we get up enough and they can't stop the run so we just keep handing it off. That's my hope and point of my posts. Show CU you can line up and cram it down a defense's throats. I think we might have the O ilne to do that this year against a team like UTEP.

Fair assessment

How bad was our QB room last year? HH would have been a backup QB at UNK had he transferred there. He wound up being our starting QB instead.
Worst QB room in program history by far
Just saw where Purdy and Sims both lost their QB battles and will be carrying clipboards this season. So all of last season's QBs will be backups this season.
