Royals

Yes, I hate to say it but the Royals are done. Really their only hope of winning the division is beating Cleveland. I think there are 8 games left between the two teams, and the Royals would pretty much need to win all 8, which I doubt happens. The only hope is the Wild Card, and even if by some miracle they make the Wild Card game, I doubt our pitching or our bats are good enough to beat New York in Yankee Stadium. Judge and Sanchez would have a field day with our current pitching.

IMO This just goes to show how valuable Perez is to this club. The team's current woes began about the time Perez went on the DL. Butera is a good catcher, but he just isn't as sound defensively, he doesn't have the same pop in his bat, and you lose the fun loving leadership that Perez brings. It's just a totally different team without him in the line up and I can't help but think some of downward slide is the result of not having Perez.

Yeah...this sucks. Our pitching is terrible right now. All of it. Bats don't have much pop either. I hope we at least make a final run at the playoffs here. But I fear that we are folding.

I've seen this team come back from bigger odds, so I'm still not ready to throw dirt on them yet... But honestly, the past few games, the game last night... It looks like they would rather be doing anything else than playing baseball. They have the look of a team that has quit. Never thought the core would fold this easily. Its just baffling right now. They are still only 3 out of the 2nd WC, but it feels like they are 10 back. Kennedy has regressed to being a Chris Young type pitcher... Vargas has regressed, Duffy is hurt, Salvy trying to play hurt is tough to watch. He's a liability on offense in his current condition, but Butera is so bad on defense they can't leave Salvy out longer. Moose being hurt seems to have taken all of his power away recently. Whit, Cain, Melky and Hosmer can only do so much...

Delete this tread. Royals are cooked. Tribe by far the best team in the Central.

You want to talk Tribe, create a thread. Nobody is forcing you to be here.
Lol people were thumbing their chest about the royals like they were good. They're meh. Keep this thread up, its fun to go back and read old post.

I guess being in 2 world series the last 3 yrs is something the Indians can brag about. Oh wait...

Lol if carlos correa fields a bouncing ball in 2015 royals don't have a ring. But hey luck is apart of the game. Tribe can brag about being a far superior franchise than the royals, that's for sure.

Perhaps...but they are still in Cleveland.

Based on what? You've got the same number of World Series wins and you've been around 100 years longer....I'm a Royals fan first, but have no problem rooting on the Bloody Injuns if they face a team like say, the Cubs...hopefully they don't blow a 3-1 lead this year

Hate to say it, but it may be all but over for our Royals this year. They would need to finish September 20-10 to get to 85 wins, and in the discussion and right now that kind of seems like a impossible task, considering we couldn't even win a series against a sub .500 Rays team at home.

Gonna need to go..
2 out 3 vs. Twins @ Minnesota - 2 out of 3 won. Check.
2 out 3 vs. Tigers @ Detroit - 2 out of 3 won. Check.
3 out 4 vs. Twins @ home - 2 out of 4. It's somehow not over with the help of others.
2 out 3 vs. White Sox @ home
2 out 4 vs Indians @ Cleveland
2 out 3 vs. Blue Jays @ Toronto
2 out 3 vs. White Sox @ Chicago
1 out 1 - Win the makeup game against the Yankees in NY (if they somehow made to this point, might be looking at WC game preview)
2 out 3 vs. Tigers @ home
2 out 3 vs. Diamondbacks @ home

That would get us to 20-10. A sweep against the White Sox & Detroit at home would most likely lock up a wild card birth. Any of this doesn't turn out, its lights out for the 2017 Royals.

The problem isn't being 3.5 spots out of the wildcard. The problem is with being 3.5 out with 5 teams to pass to get into the second wildcard spot. 4 of those teams are West teams also. That's a pretty tall order with 27 games left. I'm not counting them out just yet, as hopefully this team has one last big winning streak in them.

2 out of 3 from Detroit. They are still on schedule. If this was a video game, I'd say they just passed lvl 1 and are about to face the boss. Gotta take 3 of 4 from the Twins.

Vargas only allowed 2 runs on Sunday while pitching into the 6th inning. He was taken out after 84 pitches because it was hot as hell in KC.

He had one rough outing the same day he was announced as an All Star. Then after 12 days off, he has his worst start of the season.

Dude has had 2 bad starts. He's not going to trot out an un Godly 2.25 ERA. That's obvious, but the dude has carried a sub 4 ERA in over 70 career starts for the Royals. To suggest he's going regress to "awful" is a bit much.

Hate to say it, but I'm pretty sure i was spot on. Vargas is been plain awful since the end of June. Was thinking of your post the other day when Vargas got rocked last night and Saw the post was bumped so I had to point it out. All in good spirit. I promise.

Royals are now 69-69

i don't get why gordon didn't catch that pop up with one out in the 9th. He makes that play and then the great catch he made two batters later ends it.

I think we've seen him be slightly more tentative on the in-between balls along the line this year. For good reason, doesn't want another collision like last year. Although, I think he's really pissed at himself about the play last night, so look for him to run through a wall making a catch sometime this weekend.

I shake my head in disbelief that KC is still in the conversation for a WC given how bad they are right now. I'm just trying to enjoy watching the last couple of weeks as a "thank you" for all of the joy this group has given my family. My two boys grew up and grew to love baseball with these guys, so it's going to be an adjustment.

Last nights lost may have just ended the season for the Royals. I mean, they can still run off 3 in a row and be on schedule, but that is probably asking a lot. And if they only win 2 of the next 3, they'd have to pick up a sweep in another series, which is a long shot as well. Only win 1 of 3, and its game over officially because the math becomes darn near impossible then.

as a twins fan, gotta say i really love your starting pitcher tonight he is serving up some yummy treats for my twins

I am at the game and it isn't pretty. I need a distraction...Diaco's defense, uniform choice, handing out too many blackshirts, Runza or Valentinos...something please. Winking

The season has been an absolute disaster for the Royals - much of it self-inflicted, but also some horrible luck. Off the top of my head:

Yordano Ventura's death in the off-season. Hammel has been decent as his replacement, but who knows if the shock of Ventura's death contributed to the 10-20 start.

Trading Wade Davis for Jorge Soler. Said another way, trading Wade Davis for nothing. This move alone cost the Royals a playoff spot in 2017. If Davis is still on the team, the Royals have 10 more wins, if not more. Soler could not have been more awful. Without a doubt this is the worst trade in Royal's history. Worse than David Cone for Ed Hearn.

Herrera and Matt Strahm struggled in the new roles that they took on because of the Davis trade. Strahm was so bad - he cost the Royals 3 games the first week of the season by himself - that he was sent back to Omaha. Herrera has blown 4 saves this year, and lost 3 or 4 other games that were tied when he came him. He's been yanked in 4 games the past 3 weeks because he hasn't been able to finish the 9th. In contrast, Wade Davis has 3 blown saves total the past 3 seasons.

Nate Karns, who came over in the Dyson trade, was pitching well, only to suffer a season ending injury in May.

Strahm eventually stabilized and became effective until he suffered a season-ending knee injury. He was later traded to San Diego for three guys at the deadline who have been beyond awful. This is the 2nd worst trade in Royal's history, because the acquisition of Cahill, Mauer, and Buchter absolutely ruined the Royals's pitching staff. Look at their numbers since joining KC. You won't believe how awful they have been.

They decided to open the season with Raul Mondesi at 2b, rather than Whit Merrifield. This move also likely cost them 4 or 5 games. I'll let you look at the numbers yourself to see how awful the decision was.

Jorge Bonifacio was a very pleasant surprise. Compare Bonifacio to Soler to further see how awful the Davis trade was. Bonifacio was already in the system and is producing what they would have hoped to get from Soler.

Hunter Dozier and Bubba Starling both got hurt and were not able to be called up in September. Dozier will probably make the 25 man next year. Starling less likely, but both guys are missing critical experience this year because of oblique injuries.

Alex Gordon is broken. He is under contact for 2 more years at nearly 20 million per year. Oddly enough, the Royals traded for Melky Cabrera - who has done well. But Cabrera has mostly taken away ABs from the productive Bonifacio instead of the simply awful Alex Gordon. Hard to figure.

It was a nice run recently, but they'll be starting over next year. Maybe Jorge Soler will replace the production of Hosmer, Moustakas, and Cain.

It's over. Barring a minor miracle, tonight's loss to the Twins have knocked them off schedule. It was a fun ride while it lasted.

Starting immediately the Royals need to get creative to get rid of the horrible salaries on the team... yes unfortunately that includes Gordon. It's going to be a long rebuild. On the plus side, tickets & merchandise should get cheaper for awhile.

I really think Gordon gives it another year and if he has another year like this one, he retires.

Are you suggesting he's going to let the Royals off the hook with his contract?

Gil Meche did it several years ago with the last year of his contract but I can't imagine another athlete doing that again. It is almost unheard of for an athlete to do that.

Maybe they can come to an agreement to pay the last year of the contract over 4-5 years to help the team? Gordon could pull a Bobby Bonilla and invest that last year into an annunity/investment and get paid millions per year for the rest of his life when the investment matures. Surprised more athletes aren't protecting their money like Bobby Bonilla in order to get guaranteed payments for many years after their retirement from their sport.

The Royals are paying Omar Infante 8 million this year...wow. Sick

Amazingly somehow every team ahead of the Royals lost yesterday, leaving them only 2.5 out after today's win. So with only a split against the twins, there still is a path to the 2nd WC. Their not dead yet!

I believe they were officially eliminated from the AL Central race today. Just a few weeks ago, the Royals were only a couple games behind the Indians. Now they are eliminated with 3 weeks to go.
