Royals

I think this trade was a win for the Royals. Cahill give the Royals a starting pitcher, and Maurer, Buchter gives two big arms out of the bullpin. This is a team that knows how to win late in games. This a big road trip for the Royals.

I'm really interested to see how Duffy does tonight. We need him to be a clear #1 for the rest of the season. From purely a baseball perspective, every time I've watched Wood, Junis, Skoglund, etc start this year I've wondered what might've happened if not for losing Ventura. But hey, the Royals have hit more dingers than the Rockies so far this season! Say what?!?

Royals may not be done yet on the trade market. The rumor this morning is that they are looking at Francisco Liriano from the Blue Jays. Not sure what else we have to part with in a trade though. Maybe Bubba? I wouldn't want to get rid of Mondesi.

Vargas and Duffy should be a solid 1 - 2 but it doesn't appear like it's going to happen like that. Just as Duffy has started to turn it on, Vargas has gone to awful. Has not had a quality start since June and his next 2 starts are @ Boston & @ Baltimore. Not exactly pitcher friendly parks. Vargas is the Key to KC making a run in my opinion. Theyve been beating up on the bottom feeders this last 7 games but can they beat the better teams?

Cahill will give KC more Ks but he is prone to giving up runs. At the end of the day, I believe pitching and defense beats offense.KC just doesn't have great SP but I guess thats been their MO for years, even the World Series teams. Middle relief is what they do best so maybe they are an exception to the rule. I just dont see beating out the tribe. Especially when you look at the upcoming schedule. I think they are a Wild Card team, however.

Cahill supposedly gets quite a few ground balls. That is good, as the Royals are on pace to commit the fewest errors in franchise history.

Vargas only allowed 2 runs on Sunday while pitching into the 6th inning. He was taken out after 84 pitches because it was hot as hell in KC.

He had one rough outing the same day he was announced as an All Star. Then after 12 days off, he has his worst start of the season.

Dude has had 2 bad starts. He's not going to trot out an un Godly 2.25 ERA. That's obvious, but the dude has carried a sub 4 ERA in over 70 career starts for the Royals. To suggest he's going regress to "awful" is a bit much.

I'd like to believe (so I'm going to) that Dave Eiland may be able to help Cahill harness his "stuff" a bit. He really seems to have a track record of getting the best out of guys. Speaking of which, the Cubs just DFA'd Brett Anderson...

Hey, I hope your right and he will be fine. He needs to bounce back but everything I have stated is true. He has not thrown a quality start since 6/30 against the Twins. 5 innings pitched on Sunday is not a quality start by definition of a quality start. It's just not. Pitching into the 6th without recording an out means he pitched 5 innings. Sorry bro and the 2 before that were awful. Make all the excuses you want for that but he got shelled in those starts and they were awful. Also, his K's per 9 have been on a decline since mid-June.I don't think anyone expected him to throw a 2.25 ERA but its went from 2.22 to 3.08 in a month. That's actually a very big increase. These are indicators for a declining pitcher. Plus his numbers lately are now trending toward his career averages, which isn't ACE stuff.

The one positive thing I see in him still, is during all this, his walks really have not increased all that much. That's good considering he's a control pitcher. So as long as he continue to hit the zone and his spots, it wouldn't surprise me one bit for him to bounce back. Also, teams he's faced 2 or more times this season, for the most part, he's pitched better the 2nd and/or 3rd time. That's what seems most impressive to me about him this season. If your bar on Vargas is to be a solid 5 IP keep KC in the game type, then I think you will be happy. I was more talking about KC need for him to be an ACE and have that career year this year. We shall see. One thing I do know, he can't afford to lose Perez to the DL.

Exactly. KC does not beat themselves. They do not make errors and for the most part, keep their strike outs to minimum.

Watched the new relievers in the 8th and 9th last night. Holy jeez Maurer works about as fast as any pitcher I have seen in recent years

Picked up Melky Cabrera! Royals making moves! A big bonus to the pitching staff and some pop to the line up along with experience and a great guy in the locker room. The Royals are officially making a playoff run. The year boils down to the 2 series' (7 games) with the Indians. If they can win 4 of 7 they will have a good chance to take the division and a near guarantee to make a Wild Card spot.

It's hard being right all the time.

Maybe you are, maybe you're not. Races aren't decided on August 9th, and they currently still are tied for the 2nd WC spot. So don't get all high and mighty yet. Just a couple of weeks ago Boston was on life support, now they are in 1st place by 4 games. Every team goes through rough stretches.

Royals are not winning the division. Tribe all day.

Again, you don't know this. They should be running away with the division, but aren't. What does that say about them? And if they do win the division, like they are predicted to do, that's fine, the Royals will battle for one of the wild card spots the entire year. Look at the teams below us in the WC standings... Which one looks like the team that's going to roll off a ton of games to break away from the pack. To me, there isn't one.

Pitching. That was my argument from jump street. And our pitching, from top to bottom, has been below average for some time now. This includes the guys we picked up from the Padres. Even if we go on a run and somehow make the playoffs this team isn't going anywhere with this pitching staff. Should have sold.

Tonight... This series, basically the past 10 games have sucked. But I'm not ready to throw in the towel. This core has fought back so many times, I'm not about throw dirt on them yet. They have a ton of games against Cleveland coming up. They have to get right before then. Maybe Eiland can work some more magic and get the pitching back to an acceptable level.

Funny how any critisism of the huskers under riley and archie flies off the handle calling people out and basically saying they are rooting for him to fail...

Off the handle? Dramatic much?

I'll always call out the assholes that were pissed when Bo was fired, bagged on Riley without giving him a chance, and continue to pop onto this board exclusively after the Huskers lose games.

sell or buy; thats over my pay grade. I can tell you this though; Its great to at least be having this conversation compared to the 90's and 2000's! Being a playoff contender is so much better than being talked about as a possible team that would be contracted. I will take the critical comments and the second guessing any day over those years of going 60- 123 !!!

Unrelated, that possibility always reminds me of the most underrated Will Ferrell movie: Semi-Pro.

Let's Get Tropical!

A good old fashioned ass kicking today. Needed one of these kinds of games to get the emotions back in a good spot.

I know, right? Frankly if the team i cheered for decided to quit/sell off while immersed in a playoff race, I would find a new team to root for.

Making a business decision based on the current roster and it's potential, with five of your "best" entering free agency, is not anything close to giving up. That's my broader post ITT. The Royals haven't really done much to make themselves more competitive. We added Melky. That's the only upgrade.
